The first newsletter of the Society was issued May 1978 and has been published continuously ever since on a bi-monthly basis. With the cessation of the Shire of Eltham in late 1994, the Society's name was revised to Eltham District Historical Society and this name first appeared with issue No. 103, July 1995. The site on the corner of Thompson Avenue and Church Street, Cowes was reserved on the 12th April 1869 and the church was erected by the end of the year. Financed by the Island Church of England people. Dean McCartney preached the first sermon and performed the dedication service on 30th January 1870. Prior to this time services were held at the McHaffie homestead, Ventnor. Mrs S D (Georgianna) McHaffie, wife of the first European settlers, wrote in her diary "30th January 1870. Drove to Cowes, opened the Church, fine day". the large Bible presented by her is on loan and displayed in the Museum of the Phillip Island & District Historical Society.The timber Anglican Church of St Philips was built by Alex McLardy Sen. in 1869. It is still situated in Thompson Avenue on the corner of Church Street. The Vestry was added by Mr Alex McLardy in 1903 at the cost of 21 pounds. Handwritten notes on Big Hill Tunnel. Written by Lydia Chancellor after she saw a picture of a diesel locomotive pictured in the Bendigo Advertiser on March 22nd 1968. It brought back memories of picnics and they would walk through this tunnel. The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 in to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo. It was the first independent school of nursing in Victoria and continued until it closed in 1989. The book "The First of its Kind" was published in 2015. Printed in Bendigo by "Bendigo Modern Press". Four typed pages of memories of attending NDSN School PTS 1, compiled by Dot Strauch (nee Grenfell). "Thjs collection of Braille Music was presented to the Royal Blind Society of New South Wales by Mrs Ruby Lavers in memory of her husband Gordon Lavers L.R.S.M., A.R.C.O. Director of Music of this Society from 1917 to 1961". Braille music requires a specialised understanding of both musical scores and music Braille notation. This videotape has material related to the annual arrival in Warrnambool’s coast (mainly at Logan’s Beach) of Southern Right Whales. These whales come annually to the Western District coastline about May and stay until about October. and some calve at Logan’s Beach – hence the name Logan’s Beach Whale Nursery. The whales have become an important tourist attraction in the area. Most of the whales return to the area regularly and have been named from their particular markings. Wilma the whale was a great favourite and was seen about every three years in Warrnambool but is now appearing in other parts of Australia. The tape is dedicated to Robert Ulmann who was a well-known artist and conservationist in the Warrnambool region. He did much to ensure the whales received protection and publicity in the Warrnambool environment. This tape is now in an outdated format and will be transferred to a more appropriate form as the material in it needs to be preserved. The whale migration to Warrnambool is a significant natural history event and material from the 1990s is important. This is a videotape in a black case with a white label with black printing pasted on. The outer box is white with a white label with blue and black printing.
