A small wooden school (22' x 14') was erected in Sandon by Father Patrick Smyth in 1859 (and at Golden Point) which was used for Mass and came to be regarded as a chapel. Twenty-three years later, a brick church was built by Father Allen at a cost of 1,000 pounds. The Church was blessed by Archbishop Goold on May 6th 1883 and dedicated to St Laurence. The 1940s saw some refurbishment and in 2002 a major restoration project was undertaken. St Laurence's was restored from roof to footings, by a dedicated band of volunteers and trades people. Work was completed mid 2003 and in November 2003 St Laurence's was re-dedicated with the celebration of Mass and a picnic tea. As well as his army positions, Kelly-Kenny was very interested in politics in his native County Clare. In the Second Anglo-Boer War he was , as a Lieutenant-General, General Officer Commanding the 6th Division of the South African field forces. He was twice mentioned in dispatches and received the Queen's South African Medal with four clasps. He was involved in the relief of Kimberley, the battles of Paardeberg, Poplar Grove and Driefontein. Lieutenant-General Kitchener was appointed commander and over-ruled Kelly-Kenny's plan to besiege Cronji and bombard his force from a safe distance. Kitchener ordered an assault on the Boer trenches. The result was "Bloody Sunday" - an unnecessary sacrifice of hundreds of lives on the British side. Kelly-Kenny was involved in the engagements at Poplar Grove and Driefontein where the 6th Division distinguished itself. These were viewed as key to destroying the Boer morale and winning the war. General Kelly-Kenny was a close friend of King Edward VII. Appointments made, at the insistence of the King, were often challenged. Due to his loyalty and abilities Kelly-Kenny was appointed Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath and received a knighthood in a private audience. Once again others tried to have him moved from the War Office but the King intervened again and he remained in his position. Farquhar McCrae (1807-50) was born at Westbrook near Edinburgh, into a distinguished Scottish family. He was educated at the University of Edinburgh and graduated MD in 1827. After a sojourn in Paris he joined the staff of the general hospital at Chatham. Here he suffered an injury during a dissection, which impaired his health for the rest of his life. He was appointed curator of the museum at Chatham, and put together a notable collection of pathological specimens. In 1838 he sought to resign on the grounds of ill health, and was then offered a posting with the 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons. But with his health still poor, he decided to emigrate to a kinder climate, and arrived in Melbourne aboard the barque Midlothian. McCrae set up practice in Bourke Street with his brother-in-law, David Thomas. Both were pioneers in the use of anæsthetics. McCrae was the first to introduce chloroform, Thomas ether. Sometime after 1841 McCrae moved to Sydney, where he was one of the first medical practitioners appointed to the staff of the Sydney Infirmary and Dispensary. He died in Sydney at the age of 43 years. The sword is a dress sword of the 6th Dragoons. Made by Henry Wilkinson of Pall Mall, it is 38 inches (96.5cm) long and has an elaborately engraved and highly polished steel blade. Being a ceremonial weapon, the blade is quite blunt, and the gilt guard bears the crown and monogram of Queen Victoria, which dates the sword to late 1837 or 1838. The grip is bound in snakeskin and the sword is carried in a leather scabbard with brass mounts. It remains as one of the important links to the pioneering days of Melbourne, and early medical practice in Australasia.Sword, ceremonial, steel with brass decoration and a steel handle, highly decorated, in a scabbard of patterned black leather covered metal, brass tipped, 100 cm long. Significant items relating to Albert Telfer White who entered Ballarat College April 1912 and left December 1918. Albert was born 29 June 1897 at his home 'Ashford Vale" farm, Cuthbert's Road, Cardigan. Albert, a second generation Australian, was the fourth son and sixth of eleven children born to dairy farmer John White and his wife Elizabeth, nee Douglas. Albert attended Bunker's Hill State School prior to enrolling at Ballarat College. After College he obtained employment with the engineering firm Ronaldson and Tippett in Ballarat. Following his eighteenth birthday Albert enlisted in the AIF in Ballarat with the rank of Private, No 2012. He embarked for the Middle East with 23rd Battalion on 26 August 1915 and was 'taken on strength at the Gallipoli Peninsular 25 October 1915". On 10 January 1916 Albert was posted to Alexandria, Egypt and during this time he was able to meet with his aunt Rose Douglas, an Australian Army Nursing Sister. This was a great comfort to his family. Albert was sent to France 19 March 1916 and transferred to the 22nd Battalion. He was mentioned in dispatches for 'good and gallant conduct' 5 August (1917?). Albert was hospitalised 30 March 1918, rejoined 22nd Battalion 3 June 1918, wounded in action 3 October 1918 but died of wounds at Rouen 10 October 1918. news of his death was received by his family n Australia just prior to the armistice. Elenor Hinde (1842-1902) was born in Lancashire England. In 1858, Eleanor married Richard Reynold in the Forest St Wesleyn Methodist Church in Sandhurst. They both gave their address as Sailors gully Goldfields. They had seven children together. Richard was a skilled tradesman and after he died in 1872 from lung disease, Eleanor married Arculus Opie. Eleanor owned a property on the corner of gladstone and Stanley Streets which later became an electrical substation. She sold poultry and eggs and preserves. One of Eleanor's sons, William John, married Anna (Annie) Jorgesnsen, and one of her daughters. Amelia, married Anna's brother Thomas Joynes Jorgensen. The Jorgensens founded and managed Jorgensens and Sons foundry and engineering works. Peter Jorgensen (1849-1914), was a mining contractor, he lived at, "Bro," Russell street, Quarry Hill. His firm was Jorgensen and Sons, mining contractors. He was a native of the Island of Alsen, Denmark. Jessie and Colin had four children, Pamela, Barre, Helen and Graeme. She died on 26 February 1994. Murray Comrie Collection. This two-storey building was built in 1866 by the Colonial Bank of Australasia. Before this, the site had been occupied by Foo's shop. Whilst it was being built, the Colonial Bank operated from Company's Hotel (later known as Burstall Hall and the Council Chambers). The double-storey building in this image was used by the Colonial Bank from 1866 until 21st February, 1888. The premises were sold to the Union Bank for £2500. The Union Bank moved in and commenced operations on 6th June 1888, continuing until 1942. The building was later used as a general store until the 1990s. It is now a private residence. This is a reasonable copy of an older original. A photo of Barbara Leach, volunteering with a badge tray, and a bag piper in the centre of St Kilda Road. The slogan says "Please buy a badge". It appears to have been professionally taken to publicise Legacy Week in the newspapers. The photo appeared on the front page of the Herald Sun on 6 September 1991. The accompanying articles says that police piper Constable Ross Bates played outside Legacy House to pipe in Legacy Day, which saw hundreds of collectors spread across Melbourne for the badge appeal. The appeal was aiming to reach $500000 to beat the previous year's total of $467,702. The reference number 910906/9 could mean the date was the 6th September 1991. This copy book was used by Maggie McKay in 1902 when in 6th Grade at Meeniyan State School (no 3165) and was learning to write in the approved manner. Vere Henry Louis Foster (1819-1900), an educationist, philanthropist, and humanist, who worked devotedly to improve the situation of the Irish poor, published a series of these copy books to improve writing skills, as better literacy and penmanship meant better chances of employment. The books were first published in 1865 and were sold for 1 penny, a fraction of what they cost to produce. In the first year alone one million Foster's Copy Books were sold. The series of books taught children the alphabet and writing. It was collected to be a record of a photo of past presidents. Legatee Bruce Hall was the son of Legatee Ray Hall (president in 1931) and nephew of Legatee Rex Hall (president in 1933). In World War 2 Legatee Bruce Hall served with the AIF in Darwin and New Guinea with the 6th Division Signals. He joined Legacy in 1958 on the nomination of Legatees Bill Perrin and Roy Nutting. The article was part of an album of past presidents from 1965 to 1989. The folder included biographical details and obituaries, eulogies and death notices of prominent Legatees. The first newsletter of the Society was issued May 1978 and has been published continuously ever since on a bi-monthly basis. With the cessation of the Shire of Eltham in late 1994, the Society's name was revised to Eltham District Historical Society and this name first appeared with issue No. 103, July 1995. Portrait of King George V (Duke of Kent) 1935Presented to the 6th Battalion Royal Melbourne Regiment by an Allied Battalion the Royal Fusiliers as a toke of friendship and esteem. This Portrait would have hung pride of place in the officers mess from 1935-? The portarait is also signed by the artist, an M.C reciepient, as well as the the reigning monarch, and colonel in chief of the presenting unit. It is supported by a letter from the colonel of the Presenting unit, Maj Gen Hill CB.CMG.DSO, and as such is hghly provinanced Colour print of His Magesty King George V wearing the unaiform of the the Royal Fusilliers, Read coat with decorations and blue sash under a navy blue over coat. The print is signed in lead pencil by the artist and by King George V on the lower edge. A regimental badge is present in the top right of the image. The picture is framed in a pewter coloured frame with ornate leaf mouldings in the corners. On the lower edge of the frame is a plaque which states " From the Colonel and Officers of the Royal Fusilliers 1935" Also included with the portait is a letter on Royal Fusiliers letterhead dated October 23 1935 " From - Maj-Gen. W.P.H. Hill. CB. CMG. DSO., Colonel. The Royal Fusiliers Dear Armstrong I am forwarding to you under a separate cover an engraving of a portrait of His Majesty, King George V, Colonel - in - Chief, the Royal Fusiliers, in the uniform of the Regiment, This portrait was painted by Captain Oswald Birley, M.C., late Royal Fusiliers, and presented to the Regiment by Lord Wakefield to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the raising of the Regiment of Fusiliers at the Tower of London in 1685. His Majesty has graciously signed this copy for presentation to your Regiment from the Corps of the Royal Fusiliers, and we trust that you will accept it as a token of friendship / and esteem .... and esteem we feel for our Allied Battalion, the 6th Battalion, the Royal Melbourne Regiment Yours Sincerely W.F.H. Donated by Jessie Smith (nee Small) who had an estate agency in Cowes. Letter was sent to David Johnson - Dial for Dollars - explaining that the contestant who spoke of a 6 legged sheep was telling the truth.Sepia photograph of a 6 legged sheep.On back of photograph: "David Johnson Dial for Dollars. You seemed to think your leg was being pulled by one of your contestants when he spoke of 6 legged sheep. Here it is - 6th leg protected from 5th leg, had short leg, hoof and all. This was reasonably common thing to have a photo inset done by Soldiers. Photo inset re; Albert Edward Corrie, pre war he was a Postal employee. Enlisted 25.7.1940 Regt No VX47191 age 30 years, 27.7.1940 he was posted to 7th Div Postal Unit, embark for Eygpt 15.9.1940, hospital at sea 10.10.1940 with Otitis Media, on deck again 13.10.1940, During his time in the Middle East he had various Postal transfers including HQ AIF Postal, he rose through the ranks to W.O 2 by 18.2.1942, disembark Australia 7.8.1942, then two more overseas postings, NG 2.11.1942 - 9.2.1943, posted to 6th Div Postal Unit25.9.1943, NG 29.12.1944 - 7.8.1945, discharged from the 2nd AIF 5.9.1945. Samuel Davies No 64187. Sam signed Attestation papers on 27.4.1918 age 19 years. The page is stamped at the top “passed Light Horse riding test, volunteered to serve in Eygpt”. Listed as joined on 10.6.1918 in 5th General Service Reinforcements, embarked for Eygpt 14.9.1918, disembarked 14.10.1918, allotted to A.A.S.C 30.10.1918, appointed Driver 1.12.1918, embark for Aust 29.8.1919, discharged from the AIF. A.A.S.C. “Australian Army Service Corp” Sam had 3 older brothers already serving overseas, all came home. On 15.10.1940 Sam signed Mobilization Attestation papers in the CMF No V6868 in 6th Auxillary Horse Transport Coy AASC. His service in the CMF finished on 19.8.1942 then transferred to the 2nd AIF 20.8.1942 No VX101248 until discharge on 12.11.1945Coloured certificate with Australian & Union Jack flags at the top with 2 servicemen in front. Golden wattle around border & a docked ship at the bottom. Tan wooden frame with glass front & white cardboard backing with wire hanging strap.
