The donation records indicate that this dress was worn by Georgiana Elizabeth Moore (1899-1974), who lived for most of her life in Brighton at 38 and later 40 Cochrane Street. Since the dress is of an earlier date, It is likely that it belonged to Georgiana's mother, Elizabeth Moore (1860-1950). Georgiana was born to Richard and Elizabeth Moore in Brighton in 1899. She was named after Richard's first wife, Georgiana Leake Moore (nee Paul), who had died in 1893 aged only 38. Georgiana is recorded as having been "tall with red hair". The family moved to Diamond Creek for several years, but returned to Brighton after Richard's death in 1922. Georgiana and her mother settled in Cochrane Street, where they lived for the rest of their lives. We know very little about Georgiana herself. Newspaper records indicate that she was a talented musician, graduating from the University of Melbourne with a diploma in music in 1927. BHS holds a small collection of items belonging to the Moore family. This dress was donated by Georgiana's niece, Jeannette Fraser, along with two nightgowns: a c. 1880 night dress believed to have been worn by Elizabeth and a c. 1910 night dress believed to have been worn by Georgiana's sister Amelia Henrietta Fraser (née Moore) while boarding at Merton Hall (this nightdress does also show a laundry mark of G.E. Moore and so may have been worn by both women). Georgiana herself donated a number of items to the Society in 1972, including a 1920s black and white geometric loom-beaded handbag.A good example of a princess line dress of this period in good condition and with provenance.A one-piece princess line dress, circa 1878-1882 of deep royal blue silk featuring Chinese-inspired self pattern. The neckline features a standing collar and is secured through the centre front from neck to floor with self covered buttons. At the front knee the fabric has been gathered and drawn to the back into a tiered fish-tail swag and trimmed with a matching blue knotted fringe. The swagging is created by interior tapes. Gives an outline history of the tramway system, and two stories about the tramways, one about a driver named "Hellfire Jack" and an accident between a tram he was driving and a horse pulled dray loaded with tomatoes. The Fred Rochow Railways Collection incorporates photos related to the operation of the Wodonga Railway Station including different types of trains and railways staff C. 1930 – 1990. It was donated to the Wodonga Historical Society by Fred Rochow, a railwayman who spent many years based in Wodonga. He joined the Victorian Railways on 17th June l947 and retired in 1988. For some time, he was a member of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen and served a term as a member of the Trades Hall Council. He had an extensive knowledge of the struggles that took place to achieve better conditions for railway workers. Fred worked for many years as a fireman and then worked his way up the ranks to driver, experiencing many changes from the days of steam locomotives through to diesel trains, locomotives and even the modern XPT train. He worked throughout Victoria at different stages of his career, with his final working years focused on the northeast of Victoria and the Albury to Melbourne line. After his retirement, Fred continued to share his love of steam miniature trains with the community.This collection has local and statewide significance as it captures images of trains, locomotives and personnel who operated the railway services in Wodonga and throughout Northeast Victoria. This collection of 16 photos was most likely taken in 1978. Mr Denis James “Jim” Killen was the Minister for Defence in the Fraser Government from 1975 to 1982. It’s evident in these photos he was taken on a tour through the production areas in Air Survey, Cartographic and Lithographic Squadrons. Jim Killen served in the RAAF in WW2 and later had an illustrious career in politics. After receiving his knighthood and an AC for service to Australia, he was known as Sir Denis James "Jim" Killen, AC, KCMG. Key Army Survey Regiment personnel identified include the CO LTCOL Bob Skitch, who led the unit from 1976 to 1980 and WO1 Aub Harvey, who was RSM from 1976 to 1982.This is a set of photographs of a visit to the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo c1978, by Mr D.J Killen who was the Minister for Defence. The foundation stone of the Victorian Seamen's Institute, which is to be erected in Beach street, Port Melbourne, was laid on Wednesday afternoon by His Excellency the Governor, in the presence of Lady Loch, the Post master-General (Mr. F. T. Derham), Sir James MacBain, Colonel Sargood, and Mr. S. Fraser, M's.L.C., the Dean of Melbourne, the members of the local council, Mr. John Blyth, and a large concourse, of spectators. Captain Pasco then presented His Excellency with a silver trowel and a silver-mounted ivory mallet, whereupon the stone was lowered into position. The stone was placed in the 1937 building then given into the care of the Port Melbourne Historical and Preservation Society during the demolition in 1995. Then it was placed in the bluestone wall in front of the building with the other building stones.The 1888 Mission was sold in the 1930s when the new building, designed by Harry Norris was open in 1937. The 1888 building is still standing but is now for commercial use (restaurant). The remaining trailers 2 and 3 (after Nos 1 and 4 had been motorised) and a line of Duncan & Fraser tramcars in the depot. The broken paving and heaps of sand suggest that the tram shed is being extended to add roads 3 and 4 to the west. That would date the photo as 1914. Regattas were held on the Barwon River at the terminus of the South tramline which was linked directly to the other suburban destinations, Newtown and West Geelong. The standard fare was 3d cash or, for some shorter "sectional" journeys, pre-paid 2d tickets. The photograph shows Geelong No. 2, built by Duncan and Fraser of Adelaide in 1911 in its as-built configuration, c1920 at the Wharf terminus, known as the Moorabool Street Pier. The tram line was opened in 1912 and closed in 1940 when the track in Corio St was extended to the Beach terminus. There are a number of horse-drawn vehicles in the view with goods being loaded or unloaded on the ship moored on the right. The tramway was operated by the Melbourne Electric Supply Co. (MESCo). The photograph from the collection of Ken Magor was published in the Sydney Tramway Museum's magazine Trolley Wire in April 1981. The photo caption advises - "The steamship to the right is the Edina, a veteran Port Phillip steamer which was launched in 1854 and was not broken up until 1957." The Fred Rochow Railways Collection incorporates photos related to the operation of the Wodonga Railway Station including different types of trains and railways staff C. 1930 – 1990. It was donated to the Wodonga Historical Society by Fred Rochow, a railwayman who spent many years based in Wodonga. He joined the Victorian Railways on 17th June l947 and retired in 1988. For some time, he was a member of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen and served a term as a member of the Trades Hall Council. He had an extensive knowledge of the struggles that took place to achieve better conditions for railway workers. Fred worked for many years as a fireman and then worked his way up the ranks to driver, experiencing many changes from the days of steam locomotives through to diesel trains, locomotives and even the modern XPT train. He worked throughout Victoria at different stages of his career, with his final working years focused on the northeast of Victoria and the Albury to Melbourne line. After his retirement, Fred continued to share his love of steam miniature trains with the community.This collection has local and statewide significance as it captures images of trains, locomotives and personnel who operated the railway services in Wodonga and throughout Northeast Victoria.
