Joseph Tainton was born in Gloucestershire about 1850. He emigrated to Australia at the age of 2 years in 1853 aboard the 'British Queen' with his father James Tainton (aged 39) , mother Ann (Drew, aged 34), and brother William 4 years. Initially named the Conservation Corps, the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV) was founded in 1959 by the Council for Nature. Today BTCV is the “largest practical conservation charity in the United Kingdom”, and celebrated its fiftieth birthday in February 2009. Its original name had been adapted from that of the Civilian Conservation Corps launched by President Roosevelt in Depression-era USA: - "I propose to create a Civilian Conservation Corps to be used in simple work, not interfering with normal employment, and confining itself to forestry, the prevention of soil erosion, flood control and similar projects. More important, however, than the material gains, will be the moral and spiritual value of such work. Roosevelt’s idea had been revived by Governor Jerry Brown of California in 1976 and exchange of ideas and personnel between the California Conservation Corps (CCC) and other US conservation corps) has flourished since. Mark Dwyer (later to play an important role in Green Corps) was leader of the first California Conservation Corps three-month exchange program to Australia in 1988. Cog spanner used for maintenance on a sheering hand piece. This particular spanner belong to Maurice Dalton who was the foreman of the show floor of the Dennys Lascelles building until his retirement after 34 years at the company. Maurice used the cog spanner in his work as a wool classer in rural Victoria and New South Wales.Three prong spanner, two prong look like spanners while the third has two small metal prongs extending from flat metal arm edge. This book has been written by Alice Goldstraw in 1937. It is a fine history of life in the Naringal/Cudgee/Heytesbury Forest area at the end of the 19th century. There are accounts of the bushland, the school and the people in the area. Alice Goldstraw (d. 1967) was the daughter of George and Robina Goldstraw who were pioneer farmers in the Cudgee area. The Goldstraw families were prominent in the early history of Warrnambool and district, especially as timber millers and sawyers. This book is of considerable importance as it is a rare copy of ‘The Border of the Heytesbury’ written by Alice Goldstraw. It provides a wealth of material for researchers. An index to the book has been compiled by the Warrnambool and District Historical Society. This is a soft cover booklet of 34 pages. It has a buff-coloured cover with black printing and blue lines on the front cover. There is also a Warrnambool & District Historical Society stamp on the front cover. There are eleven chapters on ‘The Border of the Heytesbury’ and one chapter on ‘Some People in the Heytesbury’. The printed pages are divided into two columns.
