With the mill’s future uncertain, the site has been added to the Victoria's State Register of Historic Buildings. When the wider factory was demolished and the Cairnlea estate was being developed, the mill was at risk of being demolished. Local residents and heritage advocates formed Friends of the Black Powder Mill Inc., who became the primary campaigners for its preservation. The Brimbank City Council supported the Friends group’s efforts, including running public surveys and public meetings thus allowing the local residents have their say in the future of Black Powder Mill. There were many people who wanted it restored but there also many people who wanted it demolished. This photograph is of some of the material used by Council during the public consultation phase of saving The Black Powder Mill.Saving The Black Powder Mill is nationally significant because it is the only surviving gunpowder manufacturing building on its original site in Australia, and one of the very last purpose‑built military gunpowder mills in the world. The technique he used was colourful house paint, painted directly onto the walls of the German mess hut, reading room and recreation hall. After the war, the recreation hall paintings and all, was moved from the camp to the nearly town of Murchison and used as the RSL local dance hall for 50 years. When the hall was demolished the paintings were restored and framed by citizens of Murchison. She found this shoe under the partially-demolished floor of the house. st ninians george ward cole children's clothing 19th century Handwritten in pencil on the sole of the shoe: "Found under floor at St Ninians 1974 Sept during demolition". ...This child's shoe was found underneath the floorboards of the historic Brighton house St Ninian's, 10 Miller Street, during its demolition in September 1974. One of Brighton's earliest buildings, St Ninian's was built around 1841 for merchant, politician and former British naval officer George Ward Cole (1783-1879) and his family. Ward Cole was a prominent member of Victorian society in the mid-to-late nineteenth century. He served in the Victorian Parliament from 1853-55 and 1859-79. His seaside home in Brighton was a fashionable rendezvous for many important identities who shaped Melbourne’s history. Victoria’s first royal visitor, Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, was a guest there in 1867. It is possible the shoe belonged to one of the Ward Cole children. Photo c1921 with cars in front. The original wooden Hotel was built by Dawkin & Hickory in 1863. George Dawkin had the first license. It had 4 bedrooms and two sitting rooms. John Hunter had the license from 1876 to 1889 when he died. During this time it boasted 16 rooms with commodious premises. In 1907 when owned by H. Edhouse of Bryant & Co Brewery the old wooden building was pulled down and a new one erected. Tenders for this were in the vicinity of 2000 pounds. After the rebuilding Mary Oliver held a license from 1908 until 1921. Created by BIGFish in Footscray, he was designed as a playful, larger‑than‑life movie mascot. He was a muscular figure holding a globe wrapped in a strip of film, symbolising movies around the world The sculpture and was built from metal, with a bold, comic‑book aesthetic and was only intended originally to last only five years, but he became a local icon instead. The Sunshine Marketplace redevelopment in 2016 included a significant refurbishment of Millennium Man but by 2020, he had deteriorated badly with rust and structural issues, and the fact that people loved climbing on him made him a public liability. The Millennium Man was removed sometime after 2020 and has not returned to the site. The wooden buildings of Sunshine Railway Station were demolished as part of the Region Railway Line works that created additional and longer platforms, pedestrian overpass with lifts for disability access. The City of Brimbank Sunshine Branch Library and Customer Service Centre was built on the former H.V. McKay Massey Ferguson Site. The former eastern end extension had previously been demolished ...The Sunshine Municipal Offices in Alexandra Avenue Sunshine opened in 1967. The building was designed by Gordon Stuart Warmington, a former Sunshine resident. The building was a substantial modernist civic structure with a distinctive boomerang / Y‑shaped plan. Its most iconic feature is the dramatic stained‑glass mural panel projecting over the main entrance featuring a modern sun motif referencing Sunshine’s industrial identity and the Sunshine Harvester Works logo. During the 1970's and 1980's additional wings and extension were added to the eastern side of the building. The building served as the City of Sunshine’s Town Hall until the municipality was abolished in 1994, when Sunshine merged into the newly created City of Brimbank. After the new Brimbank Community and Civic Centre in Hampshire Road opened in 2016, the Council moved its corporate and library operations to the new building. The Alexandra Avenue site was sold to developers in 2018 for $5.58 million. The building then fell into disrepair and was subject to a number of arsonist attacks, squatting, drug taking and other criminal activity. The building is protected by heritage overlays, particularly for its stained‑glass mural and original 1960s form. In November 2025, the City of Brimbank ordered the owners of the site to undertake some emergency demolition works to make the site safe. The stained‑glass mural panel was dismantled in pieces and has been store away for future restoration works by the City of Brimbank.These photographs record the part demolition of a former City of Sunshine Civic building from December 2025 to February 2026.
