Document - Text, Guide to the Contracting of Words
Contractions are used in Braille to allow reduce the amount of space that a word occupies on the page, whilst still maintaining the ease of reading. In list this, a series of words with their common contractions helps the reader to use them. For example: the word atone, in this list, would be spelt with an 'a' and 't', then the contraction for 'one' would be used. In some instances, two contractions are listed, which the reader identifies by the use of a slash between them. For example: demented is 'd' then 'e', then 'ment' and a second contraction of 'ed'. The origin of this list is unknown, however has been designated as the Braille and Talking Book Library.4 pages of typewritten words with contraction notesbraille, transcription -
Parks Victoria - Wilsons Promontory Lightstation
Muslin & Wick
This item, which dates to 1988, is contained in the original supply packet and survives in good condition. It was commonly used by lightkeepers for both wet and dry bulb thermometers, with the muslin going into the bottom of the dry bulb where it was held in place by the wick and ‘end of the wick was then placed in a jar of deep water to keep the bulb cool’. The difference in temperatures between the dry and wet bulb thermometers could then be worked out to establish the dew point in the air. They were common in lightstations, but this intact item remains in the original packaging and is a fine representative example of its kind. It was acquired from the Bureau of Meteorology. Recording and communicating weather readings was an important facet of lightstation work and a number of different but related items of meteorological equipment survive at the six lightstations managed by parks Victoria. The Cape Nelson collection includes a pair of Australian-made thermometers in their original box, both in Fahrenheit, with one recording the minimum, the other the maximum temperature and a barometer table with instructions for correcting readings. Cape Otway has a Beaufort Scale, a table of wind forces which lists 12 types on a scale of 1 to 12, and provides associated speed in knots and travel time per minute or hour. Gabo Island has an anemometer, wind speed indicator and a wind speed recorder.Muslin and wick for a wet bulb thermomenter in unopened white paper packaging with directions for use printed on the package on the front. On front of package,"MUSLIN AND WICK FOR WET BULB THERMOMETER......." -

Inclinometer, Early 20th Century
Provenance not clear. Leather case has 'MMBW' inscribed in black pen, indicating an association with Melbourne Metropolitan Board of Works. Item has been in the possession of Terry McCormack since 1972Hand held brass pocket inclonometer level, circa 1920. Leather case for safe storage. Semi circular graduated dial with 90 degree vernier scale with a small (20mm) magnifying glass to aid reading the vernier scale. Above the body, mounted at the rear of the graduated dial, is a spirit level tube which is tilted by finger movement to the milled hand wheel. The height to be determined is sighted through the instrument eyepiece and the bubble tube is tilted until the bubble, viewed in the mirror inside the sighting tube, is brought level with the graticule sighted at the top of the subject object. An angle is thus obtained and by measuring the distance on the ground to the object, trigonometry can be applied to determine the height of the object.Herga & Co. BRISBANE. Made in England -

Photograph, Alford's Little Wonder Store Bacchus Marsh 1883
The Little Wonder Store was built in 1883 from materials of the demolished Maddingley School. It was located on the corner of Grant Street and Labilliere Street. In 1886 James Alford obtained a licence to conduct the Railway Hotel and General Store there. A second storey was added later and the building continued to operate as the Railway Hotel. It was destroyed by fire in 1998. The photo also shows the covered wagon of a travelling salesman, who were known as ‘hawkers’, who were significant in the supply of goods and news to outlying towns and districts before the development of road and rail networks. Small sepia 'carte de viste' style unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. It gives information on the forthcoming Summer School of Drama held in Melbourne, the group’s Dinner Dance, a play reading of the play, ‘J.B.’ and the group’s next production, ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’. The secretary of the group at the time was Ian Hill. Warrnambool has had a great number of community drama societies and groups since the 1860s and the City of Warrnambool Theatre Group has been putting on local stage productions since 1948. Two prominent members of the group were Cyril and Joyce Hayward. Today the group is called the Warrnambool Theatre Company. This newsletter is of interest as an example of an early newsletter from a prominent and important amateur theatre group in Warrnambool. These are two sheets of foolscap paper folded in three places for postage purposes. One page has the postal address of the recipient, two pages have black typing and one page is blank. The front page with the address has a red stamp and postal franking. Originally the two sheets were stapled together but the staples have been removed. The pages have yellowed with age.‘Mrs D. Meter Multi General Purpose, circa mid to late 1900's
This general purpose Multi-meter was manufactured after 1950 and used by the SEC Vic (Kiewa Hydro Electricity Scheme) from that date until late 1900's. It was used to measure very small voltages associated with the operation of the various Hydro Generators. The readings were able to be shown by the resistor in use in the current circuit. During this time period, high quality testing instruments were either sourced from Europe or England. This particular meter was manufactured in the Netherlands. This type of "old" analogue meter was replaced by digital meters whose electronic components are a fraction of the size of the older analogue ones. This analog General Purpose multi-meter is quite a large (for handheld mobile) apparatus which permits the easy monitoring of electrical variations within the large SEC Victoria Hydro Scheme's electrical generators. These generators are powered by the hydro force of "stored" water at a higher altitude. The establishment of both the NSW and Victorian Hydro schemes was achieved from the mid 1900's to the 1960's. At this point in time the need for additional power sources to quench both an industrial and domestic demand for electricity was purely an economic and not and environmental (carbon reduction) factor. This hydro scheme was instigated by "the Government of the day" as a bold move and was the major force of the World War II refugee and "technical" workforce inclusion of skilled and unskilled migration into the Australian environment. Although this mass "invasion" of workers with families was thought of in some circles as intrusive, the expansion of population post war years and its integration into the Australian rural sector, produced the multi- lingual multi-cultural diversity of later years. This General Purpose Multimeter is an analogue meter i.e. it has a needle arm that moves across a scale of divisions. This is a large(hand held) device due to the mechanical movement system within and the large size of its electronic components of its circuitry. There are two black bake-lite push buttons operating the wire inserts Positive/negative leads at the top. The meter (protected with a glass window) has clearly marked graduations (top - volts, bottom amperes). Below this are two bake-lite dials (left "potentiometer the right one measuring range selector). Below this is a "dial" switch to input the desired resistance measuring range "V" Front "H&B ELIMA" and to the right Elavi 15n. 0n the front side is a label "STATE ELECTRICITY COMMISSION OF VICTORIA TRANSMISSION DEPT E.C.No." On the bottom of the base is a stenciled layout of the battery "layout" including the fuse . Article - Speech, Foundation Day Address 2002, 2002
A foundation day speech in 2002 by Past President, Legatee George Woodward. Instead of looking at the history of Legacy from a timeline perspective he chose to look at old Bulletin articles and comment on aspects of what he read. He mentions they provided a sense of belonging, of fun, sadness, enthusiasm, and activity. It gave him a different view of the founding legatees, other than as ageing old men, they were young men full of energy and enthusiasm. There were notices of marriages and children, leave taken for honeymoons etc. 'I received a terrific sense of family in reading through these early Bulletins'.A speech given at a Legacy function to commemorate the day on which Legacy was founded that has information about the early years of Legacy.White A4 paper x 5 pages with black print of 2002 speech by George Woodwardfoundation day, george woodward -

During the fifties of the last century, Charles Dickens, at the Height of his fame as a novelist, ventured on something quite new; he gave, in Birmingham, a public 'reading' of one of his stories. This turned out to be an historic occasion, opening up an extraordinary career for the great writer. Each 'Reading' was more sensationally successful than the last. The word was put into inverted commas because nothing could have been less like reading than Dickens's dramatic performance. Something like a hundred years later at the Criterion Theatre, EMILYN WILLIAMS appeared before the London public 'as Charles Dicken's, giving a solo performance of scenes from the novels.' Emlyn Williams, as actor, playwright of director (often in all three capacities simultaneously) has been in the theatre since he acquired the degree of M.A. and shook from his feet the dust of Oxford. Born in Flintshire, North Wales, in 1905, the son of a village inn-keeper, he spoke only Welsh as a child and learned English at school - a boyhood freely depicted in his comedy, 'The Druid's Rest.' At the age of ten he won a scholarship to the local Holywell County School, and at the age of seventeen another scholarship (in French) to Christ Church, Oxford. Book - Reference Teaching, Intermediate English J. Aughterson, Circa 1957
This particular edition was published in a period (1950s), when textbooks for primary and secondary schools were published by London based publishing houses such as LONGMAN. This particular publishing house brand is now only used by the Longman Schools in China. This reference book was one of the basic reading material for students learning the "English" language opposed to the "Americanised English". The two versions of English now in use are mainly influenced by the greater influx of American based media and the internet. At the time of this publication however print media was at its peak and the English used was from the United Kingdom. Although the written language is in English, the majority subject matter is of Australian origin. This text book is very significant in demonstrating the type of English taught in rural schools during the period and before the internet and the American based spell check programs now in use. The subtle changes in both the spoken and written English, due to the modern internet facilities, can be seen by the "texting" language of school aged students, post "world wide web" and mobile telephones. This English text book is a moment in time, when the isolation of rural communities had greater affect upon the standard of both the written and spoken language. It was a time when Britain was still thought of as "the mother land" and the English used was that brought to Australian by the original settlers and over time developed an "Australian flavour".Plastic covered soft green colored cardboard cover in black print. Pages (150) are printed in black ink on both sides and in different fonts.Front cover "INTERMEDIATE ENGLISH" underneath "J. "William (Bill) Clark was engineering manager with Fruehauf tractors, and now starts life as a minister at Kaniva. He'd been in transport engineering for almost 30 years before studying for ordination. The children, both grown up, one married, will remain in Melbourne. Bill told me he enjoys working with people and looks forward to the opportunity to share with lay people who know their community, in communicating toward and with the whole community the love and concern of the gospel. Margaret, his wife, enjoys gardening, crocheting, reading and walking. Bill says his other interests are practical work, including welding." 2017 - retired minister. The two photos show head and shoulders of a middle-aged Clarke.C&N identification.clarke, william, margaret clarke, uniting church minister -

Surveyor's Pocket Altimeter, c 1940
This instrument measures elevation by sensing minute changes in barometric air pressure relative to a fixed datum point at sea level or a known elevation, such as the starting point of a major town during a road survey, and has an accuracy of +/- 20 feet when used in experienced hands. The finely divided scale around the perimeter of the face is marked from 0 to 6000 feet elevation and 25 to 31 inches of mercury (Hg) for barometric pressure The single fine counter-balanced hand or pointer rotates anti-clockwise with increasing elevation and decreasing pressure. The label "compensated" indicates that the instrument is constructed to compensate for the effect of temperature changes on the accuracy of readings. Book, Government Printer, The Victorian Readers, 1986
These eight books that make up The Victorian Readers, one for each of the grades that then comprised the primary school, were first published by the Victorian Education Department between 1928 and 1930. Second editions of all but the First Book, with a few changes in content, appeared some ten years later. One-quarter of the content was required to be Australian with the remainder from Britain, the United States and Europe. Beginning in the 1950s new Departmental publications gradually replaced the old books with the exception of the Fifth and Sixth books which survived until the late 1960s, when commercially-produced reading material finally took over in schools.
