On December 17,2007 the Carols by Candlelight launch was held in the City Square. Grashir Pottery was based in Kyabram, Victoria, and between 1984-1999 was registered by ASIC under the trading name Grashir Handcrafts. The pottery was set up by Graham and Shirley Howard after Graham had worked for John Stroomer for many years. The pottery made functional stoneware marked with an impressed 'Grashir Pottery' or 'Grashir Kyabram' with a map of Australia. Pair of women's leather boots given to the donor by Miss Denbigh of 18 Gordon Avenue, Kew in the 1950s. The Denbigh sisters were the daughters of John Denbigh, a pioneer of Kew, and the first resident of 'Wimba' in Cotham Road. The family group photographed in July 1983.at Tullamarine Airport where they were gathered to farewel Nick and Elsie Varigos who were travelling to Greece. The members of the group are from L-R: Euana Evans nee Varigos, Robert Evans, Elsie Varigos, Nick Varigos, Leah Kandiliotis nee Sikiotis, John Sikiotis, and Gerry Rigos. Elsie and Nick made several trips to Ithaca in the late 70s and early 80s, staying for extended periods. Nick was born in 1909 in Rhodesia where his parents had initially migrated prior to coming to Australia. Elsie was born in Melbourne in 1925. She travelled to Greece with her parents and siblings in 1939 just prior to the outbreak of war and as a result spent almost seven years on Ithaca and experienced the occupation by the Italians and the Germans, and the hardship endured by the locals.. These items were on display in the Slab Hut (Orbost Visitor Information Centre).These items are examples of pre-decimal Australian currency and British coins no longer in use.Three decimal notes and nine coins. There are two $2 notes and one $1 note in a plastic sleeve. The nine coins are separate in small white cardboard frames with black print descriptive labelling. 2366.1 is an Australian $1 note with the queen's head, coat of arms and Aboriginal art. 2366.2 and .3 are $2 notes with John McArthur and sheep and William Farrer with wheat. There are seven coins dating from 1853 - 1897 with the head of Queen Victoria on them. This is a tall, varnished 'Roll of Honour' . Brown varnish. The top has a small gable under which is the title "ST. JOHNS CHURCH OF ENGLAND" done in gold paint. The two sides are made of a hardwood with two slots routed out of them. The bottom has a small ledge of hardwood. Under the ledge are three curved end pieces. The name section is made from plywood. In the 1830’s, European pastoralists started moving south from NSW into the Alps. In 1836, cattle grazing began around Omeo and the runs spread out into the foothills. The higher country was used for summer grazing and huts were built for shelter and storage during stock mustering. The lure of gold brought many people to the Alps from around 1850 to 1900. Bushfires destroyed the forests around Melbourne in 1939 and the boom in house-building after World War II ked to increased demand for timber from the Alps. This resulted in the building of a network of roads which helped open up access to the Alps. The early 1940’s brought the first of many workers to the Alps for the planning and construction of the Hydro-Electric Scheme. These were the pioneers and early settlers of the Kiewa Valley and provided a wealth of characters and a tapestry of stories and adventures to be handed down to future generations.These 3 posters, which were most likely produced for promotional purposes provide a glimpse into the early lives of the pioneer families of the Kiewa Valley through pictures and verse. They show their lifestyle and outline the hardships they had to endure in living and working in the Alpine region. They also highlight the early arguments regarding grazing in the high country which would ultimately lead to the end of the long traditions of the high country cattle men. Belonged to Clarence (Clarrie) Edward Nicholls who was a communications person on the Sunderland Flying Boats. He was in the Battle of Britain. He was seconded to the RAF and flew out of Plymouth. He was shot down a number of times. He was in the peace keeping corps in Japan and then Korea, and then went into the full time Korea. At one time Clarrie and his two brothers were in New Guinea at the same time. They knew they were all there together but they could not find each other, and officials would not tell them where they were. He flew the last Sunderland back to Lake Boga. He wanted to buzz his parents in Wodonga so he knew he was on the way, but the authorities wouldn't let him. Bendigo Advertiser ''The way we were'' from 2000. Undertakers: Peter Fizelle and Michael Mulqueen formed a partnership in 1898 which continued until Fizelle's death in 1901. It was then that Michael Mulqueen became the sole proprietor of the parlour with his brother John in charge of stables - an integral part of the business as many of the cabs were hired from the ranks next to the Shamrock Hotel.
