This is the art work of Hans-Wolder von Gruenewaldt and relates to his time when incarcerated as a Refugee in Camp 13 Murchison during World War 2. His personal story covering the years 1939 to 1947, was written by the author in March 1961 and translated into English by his son Axel von Gruenewaldt. This photograph is part of the Caulfield Historical Album 1972. This album was created in approximately 1972 as part of a project by the Caulfield Historical Society to assist in identifying buildings worthy of preservation. The album is related to a Survey the Caulfield Historical Society developed in collaboration with the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) and Caulfield City Council to identify historic buildings within the City of Caulfield that warranted the protection of a National Trust Classification. Principal photographer thought to be Trevor Hart, member of Caulfield Historical Society. Most photographs were taken between 1966-1972 with a small number of photographs being older and from unknown sources. All photographs are black and white except where stated, with 386 photographs over 198 pages. House is commonly spelt as "Payneswicke".From: Glen Eira Heritage Management Plan (1996) by Andrew Ward and Associates "Payneswicke" is locally significant as a prominent and substantially intact villa of its period, distinguished by its cast cement enrichment, unpainted stuccoed surfaces and commanding aspect to the south-west. Its role for a period as home for local builder, Patrick Millane (compare no. 11 Gladstone Parade) is of interest. In 1889, a nine roomed brick house was in the course of erection on the site. The house was completed in 1890 and Millane took up residence. Millane continued as owner/ occupant in 1894. However, in 1899, although Millane still occupied the house, ownership had been taken over by the Land Mortgage Bank. By 1910, Andrew Brown was occupant. Occupancy passed to Edward Brown by 1920 and to Miss A.N. Brown by 1930. Giacomo Barozzi was born at Vignola. He was called Vignola after the name of the town where he was born. Giacomo was an Italian architect of 16th century. He was among those Italian architects who spread the Italian Renaissance style throughout Western Europe. His two masterpieces are the Villa Farnese at Caprarola and the Jesuits' Church of the Gesù in Rome. A blue cloth hard cover book. Some highlights include: 3/12/1982 the film, 'A world that is dark', which was made by AFB for television release is now available on video. 31/8/1984 the Blind members' brochure includes sections titled 'Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow' which outlines the history, present position and the aims for the future of the AFB, 'Information about Blind Members' and Blind Members' Council', List of AFB homes and centres' and 'An invitation from Bryan Sitlington to be a Blind Member accompanied by an application form. It will be available to all visually impaired people, their family and friends, AFB staff and suitable for distribution at doctor's surgeries. 14/12/1984 it was reported 29 new Blind members were elected at the September meeting and the 1,000th member was among them. 8/6/1984 Mr John Blanch reported that the General Committee had approved, although rather reluctantly, Mr John Wilson's resignation and had appoint Mr John Cook as his successor. 13/9/1985 Mr John Blanch reported that following Mr Pat Lightfoot's resignation he had contacted Mr John Wicking to offer him the position of sighted representative on Blind Members' Council. John Wicking had been approached for role on the BMC however he was unable to attend Fridays. It was moved to move the meetings to the last Monday of the Month, after approaching John Wicking again. Council members agreed that if John Wicking took the position it would be good as would have been held by Pat Lightfoot and John Wicking, both past Presidents of AFB. This manuscript was the brain child of German, Adolf Wilke, Afrika Korp, Prisoner of War. In a cell in Camp 13 he watched smoke from a chimney of the Recreation Hall where his mates were discussing a play. The verses describe various members of the group and their activities. The cartoonist was Count Hans Wolter van Gruenewaldt, a German mining engineer who escaped internment in South Africa, ending as a prisoner in Camp 13. This is a copy of the original. Only 3 copies of the original were made by Gerry von Gruenewaldt - one for Adolf Wilke, one for Gus Pohlig and one for himself.
