Chadborn modification Schimmelbusch ether inhaler used by Dr Mitchell Henry O'Sullivan
Dr. Curt Schimmelbusch (1860-1895), a German physician, designed his original mask around 1889 while an assistant surgeon. Surgical assistants were often assigned the task of delivering the anesthetic. During anesthesia it was not uncommon for ether and chloroform to get onto the patient’s skin, causing irritation. Chloroform can even cause burn-like reactions. Schimmelbusch designed the rim of his mask so that both sides curve away from the patient’s face to form a kind of trough. He intended the trough-like rim to collect excess anesthetic that would otherwise have trickled onto the patient’s face. To anesthetize a patient, gauze was stretched over the metal bars and fastened in place by the hinge. The mask was placed over the patient’s nose and mouth, and the anesthetic was applied in drops or lightly poured onto the gauze so that the patient breathed in evaporated anesthetic as well as air. This type of mask is sometimes still used today for ether anesthesia in developing countries when other means are not available. (Wood Library Museum of Anesthesiology) This particular object is a modified version of Schimmelbusch's design, known as Chadborn's modification.Oval shaped chromium plated mask with two metal strips linked front to back and side to side to create a dome. An oval shaped mobile wire frame is attached to the lower part of the mask by a hinge at the back, approximately two inches from the lip of the metal handle. A "U" shaped bit of metal is attached to the front of the mask which acts as a clip to fasten the wire frame to the lower section of the mask.anaesthesia -

Textile - Pulpit fall
This pulpit fall commemorates the second Wesleyan church structure that was brought to Mount Pleasant from Clayton's Hill and erected at the corner of Morton and Tress Streets. It was about 30 feet long, 18 feet wide with slab sides and a canvas roof. The Rev Theophilus Taylor was one of the first preachers to conduct services in this church. It was the second church on the site, the first being a canvas tent erected in 1854. In 1857 a third, wooden, church was built with side buttresses and was later enlarged by transepts on each side. Newspaper clipping titled: “Trackless and with rubber wheels, it may be our next generation trams” by Timna Jacks Newspaper clipping from the Age 02/05/2021 Rubber wheels, electric batteries and no overhead wires could be the future for Melbourne’s trams. By 2025, 100 new trams will be designed and built due to a $1.5 billion government injection to fund 100 ‘‘next-generation trams’’, replacing A and Z-Class trams. Two manufacturers have been shortlisted to design and build the trams: French rail manufacturer Alstom and a joint venture comprising Spanish rail maker CAF and UGL. At 25 metres long – about eight metres shorter than the newest E-Class trams – the trams will carry 150 passengers, fewer than the E-Class, which carry 210 people. Despite the smaller size, seating will remain proportionally comparable with the E-Class, with 48 people or a third of passengers getting a seat on the new fleet. The new fleet will be the first in Melbourne to be partly powered by on-board batteries.trams, tramways, yarra trams, keolis downer, caf, rolling stock, e class, z class, a class, ugl, tramcar acquisition, tramcar design, tramcar manufacture -

Plan - Subdivision Plan, J Hurrey, Section 115 in the Parish of Boroondara Near Richmond Bridge, 1853
Despite the plans claims that it is a subdivision near the Richmond Bridge, Section 115 was located at what is now Camberwell Junction. While the plan only lists government roads rather than named streets, the section was located on the east side of Burke Road, stretching up the hill from the current Junction. Research on Trove, conducted by Kerry Fairbank, discovered an advertisement for unsold lots in Section 115 which clarifies the extent and location of subsequent land sales in the original section. The original article can be viewed through the link in the catalogue record. The interesting link to Kew is the reference to James Beavan as the purchaser of lots 14 and 15. The historian Gwen McWilliam has notes that a Mr Beavan changed his name from Bevan. The Bevans were descendants of the Derricks family of Kew. This subdivision plan is the earliest original map or plan in the collection which shows parts of what is now the City of Boroondara, dating from circa 1853. It provides important information for researchers on subsequent subdivisions following the original land sales in [Camberwell] Boroondara. The site, on the east side of Burke Road is a highly-significant and historic site. This is believed to be the only extant copy of the subdivision in public collections.A small plan on parchment listing 28 lots, between one and two acres each, for sale in Section 115 in the Parish of Boroondara, dating from 1853 when the portion was subdivided.Obverse: Lot 16 "Joseph Duval", Lots 14 & 15 "James Beavan".
