Photograph - Black and White - cable tram lighting battery workers
Photograph shows a group of five cable tramway employees with a cart containing batteries to supply power for lights in Melbourne Cable trams. This lighting was introduced by the Tramway Board (TB), the forerunner to the MMTB during 1917. A motor generator at each car house or depot provided the power to charge the batteries which were then placed in each tram for the day. Reference - The Commonwealth Engineer 1/8/1917 - Reg Item 2568. The equipment was provided by the General Electric Company. The cart has the letters "TB CH" possibly indicating Clifton Hill Depot and the batteries are lettered "NE" and then given a number. Photo date unknown - 1917 to 1940. This photograph is Public Records Office photo H84 in the Victorian Railways collection.Yields information about the type of batteries used to provide lighting power to cable trams and the workers involved and their clothing. Photograph - Black and White - demolishing cable tram track Smith St and Queens Parade 1954/55
The photograph shows the demolition or removal of the cable tram track at the intersection of Smith St Gertrude St. Fitzroy. The workmen are excavating the former cable tram track The inbound cable tram track remains in position. The 1955 Annual Report notes that work commenced following the completion of the Queen's visit in March 1954 and that all work was done by day-labour. The track was opened to service in late June 1955. The second image is from a Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works plan (part) No. 1217 - Collingwood for the intersection, obtained for reference from the State Library of Victoria Collection of MMBW Plans. It shows the layout of the cables and the large sheave pit that the cable itself passed around. The trams were required to drop the cable from the grip prior to the entry to the curve and then coast around. Map of the MMTB Tramway routes 1925 with a list of first and last cars, along with photographs of Wattle Park, Luna Park, and Studley Park. Provides information for the Prahran and Malvern lines, Hawthorn, Footscray, Essendon, Coburg, Kew, St Kilda, cable tram routes, and buses. Also provides information for passengers. The cover photo is of the front of W 296, with the destination of Esplanade. The map is dated by the opening of the line to West Brunswick as far as Albion St, the City Road to St Kilda line via Sturt St lines, and the electric line in Flemington Road which were all opened during mid to late 1925. See Reference. Shows a number of buildings and locations by a numbered reference list, including the Federal Parliament house. Photograph of the opening of the Fitzroy Northcote & Preston Tram on April 1, 1920, by the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board who had taken over the Trust on 2/2/1920. Shows tram No. 4 being used as one of the opening trams at the Preston depot in Miller St. In the background is St Georges Road. The Trust conducted a trial run using tram No. 1 one week before the Trust was taken over by the MMTB. Reference identifies Miss Alice Membrey cutting the ribbon from the driver’s cab of FNPTT No 4 – opening day at Miller Street, 1 April 1920. Alice Membrey was the daughter of Mr George Membrey, MMTB Board Member. Gives extensive details and comparisons of the battery storage system compared to the electric tramcars. Known as "Beach Cars" - see reference. Notes the work of Edison, batteries. Signed by R. Photo shows the first build of the upgraded Y class design classified Y1 Class 610. Four of these Trams were built in the MMTB Preston Workshops in 1930, 610 to 613. There was one solitary Y Class tram 469. They were built with the intention of evaluating one-man operation. Due to their higher cost and Union resentment, the MMTB resorted to the proven W Class tram design. It is fitted with a route number box. The tram entered service 26/3/1930. Details the numbers of tram defects by type due to a variety of causes by depots. Allows for analysis of the reasons and possible solutions. Note the numbers for "soiled" trams - probably someone was sick on the tram (drunk), and collisions - not just minor scrapes. Gives the mileages per defect and overall miles per defect.
