The College’s spray was one of the first pieces of surgical memorabilia to come into the possession of the College. It had been used in the Listerian wards of the Glasgow Royal Infirmary, and was presented , along with some other artefacts, by James Hogarth Pringle in 1930. Joseph Lister (1827-1912) is known as a father of modern surgery. His methods of preventing infection were controversial in their time, but are today recognized as a major advance in the practice of surgery. Lister’s life and achievements are too well known to be recounted here. The definitive biography was written by his nephew, Sir Rickman Godlee (PRCSE 1911-13), and published in 1917. Douglas Guthrie gives an glimpse of Lister at work: “...He never wore a white gown and frequently did not even remove his coat, but simply rolled back his sleeves and turned up his coat collar to protect his starched collar from the cloud of carbolic spray in which he operated...” From advances in bacteriology, and discoveries by Robert Koch and others, it became increasingly evident that airborne bacteria were not a significant contributor to sepsis in surgical wounds. They also demonstrated that the body had its own defences against invading organisms, which were seriously compromised by the effects of the carbolic spray. Gradually the use of the spray was curtailed, Lister himself finally abandoning it in 1887. Lister performed the first antiseptic operation, the dressing and splintage of a compound fracture of the lower leg, in 1865. At this time he used carbolic solution by application, and dressings soaked in the solution. The spray was developed later, after many different methods, including carbolic and linseed oil putty, had been tried in order to reduce the harmful side-effects of undiluted carbolic acid. The steam spray was developed in 1869, and announced to the medical world in 1871. Lister’s purpose in adopting the spray was to kill airborne bacteria in the vicinity of the operation before they could reach the patient. It came to be used all over the world for many years. However, it had serious disadvantages, which even Lister acknowledged. The principal problem was the inhalation of carbolic vapour by everyone in the vicinity, including the patient and the operator. In addition, if the patient had been anæsthetized using chloroform, the gas lights decomposed the vapour into chlorine gas, making any procedure an ordeal of endurance.The spray consists of a steam boiler heated by a wick, a nozzle for the steam to escape, and a glass jar for the carbolic solution. Fuel for the wick is carried in a tank at the base. Valves regulate the pressure of the steam, and the nozzle is adjustable. The boiler is made of cast iron, the fittings are brass, and the handles are of wood. Empty, the apparatus weighs 8 lbs (3.2 kg). lister, carbolic spray, antiseptic

The kerosene lamp was one of the most common oil lamps used and was manufactured until the 1980s. This lamp appears to be a modern reproduction of an earlier optional wall-mounted kerosene lamp. The lamp has been produced as an example of a 19th and early 20th-century marine kerosene navigation lamp. Marine lamp; portside metal kerosene lamp with two flat sides, and a curved front. The front has a red ridged glass lens insert and the name "port" is inscribed on a fixed brass plaque. A round chimney is on top of the lid and it has a catch. The fuel tank and wick can be removed through the base. Geoffrey R. Hendy was Ballarat College of Advanced Education Registrar since 9 February, 1989,and prior to that, was a senior member of the Registry staff for about 19 years. He died suddenly in Los Angelos, United Stated of America on 8 October 1991. The Ballarat University College Annual Report, 1991 states: "Mr Hendy made a major contribution to the student administrative services of the College and was a highly regarded member of staff. He will be sadly missed." This Kerosene lamp was made in a similar design to marine lamps of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Kerosene lamps were one of the most common oil lamps used and manufactured until the 1980s. The lamp is an example of 19th and early 20th-century kerosene lamps used on board ships. The design was still made in the 1980s. Kerosene lamp; metal framed cylindrical lamp with a hinged top lid with a chain-locking device. A swinging metal handle on top pivots on two side lugs and a loop in its centre. Another similar handle is on the base. Four thin rods join the base to the top. Alfred Maskell No VX25221 enlisted in the 2nd AIF on 25.6.40 aged 19 years. Posted to 4th Anti Tank Regt with the rank of Gunner he was taken POW at the fall of Singapore. He was held in Changi Gaol then went to work on the Thai-Burma Railway 1942-43 followed by Prison ship to Japan where he worked on the Docks until Wars end. Item issued to Cyril John WATSON. Cyril enlisted initially in the 17th Machine Gun Regt on 29.9.1939. He rose through the ranks to Lieut on 23.7.1940. Seconded to the 2nd AIF as VX39057 on 1.11.1940 with 4th Anti Tank Regt age 22 years 5 months. Embarked for Malaya 3.2.1941, hospital on ship with Influenza 11.2.1942, disembark Singapore 18.2.1942 and into hospital, rejoin unit 3.3.1941. Listed as Missing 16.2.1942, reported POW Borneo dated 22.3.1943, rescued from the Japanese 12.9.1945 at Kuching Borneo, hospital 2/9th AGH with Malnutrition and Malaria then to 2/2nd Aust Hospital Ship and stopping Morotai arriving Sydney 19.9.1945, then to Victoria and Heidelberg Military Hospital 14.10.1945. Although a bit sketchy it appears on his records he may have had Pulm T.B in early 1946, finally being discharged from the AIF on 17.1.1947. Over 500 members of 4th Anti Tank Regt were taken POW.
