Bridget BODENHAM Bridget Bodenham has a Diploma of Arts (Ceramics) from the University of Ballarat (now Federation University. In 2006 she received an Emerging Artist grant from the Australia Council for the Arts and was also part of Craft’s annual graduate survey exhibition, Fresh!. She works full time making ceramic serving ware, tableware, utensils and jewellery as well as planter pots and flower vases. The majority of her work is designed to be used and enjoyed. Bridget feels a connection to her surrounding bushland landscape and interprets the tones and textures in her work. She takes great care in creating each piece by hand and firing them up to three times in her large gas kiln. Each firing is totally unique resulting in one off pieces. Bridget Bodenham was a finalist in the Bombay Sapphire Design Discovery Award (2008) for a series of ceramic mortars and pestles, and received an Honourable Mention in the Mino International Ceramic Award, Japan. Bridget aims to create a sense of curiosity and reflection in form and function. She hopes her work delights and engages the owners hands and heart into everyday activities. For many years from 1988, Legacy held a public speaking contest called the Junior Plain English Speaking Award. Schools were eligible to send along representatives that competed. These two photos show President Geoffrey Swan with a Lana Jenkings (the winner) of Genazzano FCJ College in Kew. Part of her speech was printed in the Melbourne Legacy newsletter and she was featured in an article in the Herald Sun on 26 June 1992, before she headed to Sydney for the National finals. Every month Legacy's handicapped dependents are invited to go on outing for take part in recreational and educational activities. These programmes aim to develop independence and thus lessen the need for reliance on others for simple routine functions. Once a year there is a two week camp at Somers Camp (believed to be Somers School Camp). This photo is from 1991. An article in the widows' newsletter in 1992 explains more detail on the 1992 camp. The article mentions that the annual camps run for two weeks at Somers Camp. It is a wonderful gathering of Junior Legatees, Legatees, and dedicated helpers. 50 junior legatees attended this camp (in 1992) with the personal attention almost one-to-one. With ages ranging from 22 to into the 60s, Legacy has to ensure it caters for the differing needs. Legatees headed by Camp Chief, Jim Hammon and Chairman of the Handicapped Dependents Committee, Merv Tickell, were supported by two Camp Co-Ordinators and 50 helpers known as 'leaders'. Many of the leaders are people in the workforce wishing to give something back to the community. Junior Legatees are organised into groups. They participate in horse-riding, swimming, golfing, strawberry picking, and many other activities. Photos were in a scrapbook of photos spanning 1983 to 1991.A record of the type of activities Legacy provided for the handicapped dependents of the Legacy families. The President's Fund was created in 1932 by a donation from Legatee Walter W Berry from his late father's estate "to help temporarily embarrassed Melbourne Legatees" towards the end of The Great Depression. The aim of the fund was the give the President a way to help needy cases with discretion and without having to gain approval from committees. In many cases the money was repaid by the recipient. This sheet of accounts was compiled in 1986 to show the income and expenditure over the previous 15 years. Donations continued to come from the Berry Fund and also from the Over 70s Legatees. The over 70s was a group of legatees that met up socially and after their annual meeting they forwarded a cheque to Legacy. Also appears to be donations from legatee Dono Joynt. The expenditure is marked as ANON to protect the identity of the recipients and amounted to $7,600 over the 15 years. The note mentions some of the amounts are estimates. This document was in a folder labelled President's Fund Origin and Authorisation with many other documents that included correspondence, receipts of donations and material about when money was given to help appropriate cases. Various documents recording the discussions around helping an ex-Legatee who needed financial assistance. Louis Vavjinski was a member of Legacy in the early years (1920s and 1930s) and gave remarkable service especially to boys' classes where he was an excellent instructor. He had married a French lady at the end of World War 1 and they returned to France after the second world war. By the 1960s he was in financial difficulties and the correspondence points out that he was not eligible for an Australian pension due to living in France. A group of Legatees worked together to raise funds (over £1000) to send Louis, in one letter they approached Legacy President Ivan Layton for funds from the Presidents fund. This shows that legatees form strong bonds with each other and have a desire to help anyone in need. Daisy Pearce played for Australia in the 2006 international series in Ireland, after becoming captain of the Darebin women's football club, and in 2007 played in the E J Whitten Legends game at the Docklands stadium. She was named in the All-Australian team and played for her local Eltham club. She was the first Number 1 pick in the 2013 AFLW draft, and captained the Melbourne Football Club since the first season in 2017. Later she was a Channel Seven commentator on the men's game and, in 2024, she became AFLW head coach at West Coast. Victorian Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (VIOSH) Australia is the Asia-Pacific centre for teaching and research in occupational health and safety (OHS) and is known as one of Australia's leaders on the field. VIOSH has a global reputation for its innovative approach within the field of OHS management. VIOSH had its first intake of students in 1979. At that time the Institution was known as the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. In 1990 it became known as Ballarat University College, then in 1994 as University of Ballarat. It was 2014 that it became Federation University. VIOSH Australia students are safety managers, senior advisors and experienced OHS professionals. They come from all over Australia and industry. Students are taught active research and enquiry; rather than textbook learning and a one-size fits all approach. VIOSH accepts people into the Graduate Diploma of Occupational Hazard Management who have no undergraduate degree - on the basis of extensive work experience and knowledge. This special report was prepared by Neville Betts, Occupational Hazard Management student at Ballarat College of Advanced Education in 1980. It was to provide comment and recommendations aimed towards improving the standards of both occupational health and safety and general public safety at Sovereign Hill, Ballarat. Ian Parry (born 1947) is a Melbourne-born artist living in Tasmania, active since 1974 and collected by National and State Collections. He was winner of the 1990 ACTA Maritime art Prize. He also took part in 2006, to the ANL Art Prize organised each year at the Mission since 2003. In his biography on his website: Ian Parry was born into a family of seafaring descent. His extensive career as a respected practising artist and teacher, has uniquely included a fishing fleet apprenticeship and years as a single handed fisherman in Bass Strait. "In the early 70's when I first showed at the renowned Powell St gallery in Melbourne, the paintings were large, abstract, with allusion to the experience of the world of water, sky and land. My visual world has always been permeated with the wet parts of this place and continues to be so to this day. Maritime and geological charts and the daily necessity of plotting a course, appear in paintings where necessary, as a means of getting a schematic representation of the subject into play, trying to free the work from the tyranny of the horizon line but frequently returning. Now-a-days I am returning to abstraction, making paintings that allow me free rein with colour and composition, aiming for a sense of permanence and independence in each work." The first voyage of Lieutenant James Cook was a combined Royal Navy and Royal Society expedition to the south Pacific Ocean aboard HMS Endeavour, from 1768 to 1771. The aims of this first expedition were to observe the transit of Venus across the Sun (3–4 of June 1769). Departing from Plymouth in August 1768, the expedition crossed the Atlantic, rounded Cape Horn and reached Tahiti in time to observe the transit of Venus. In September 1769 the expedition reached New Zealand. In April 1770 they became the first known Europeans to reach the east coast of Australia, making landfall near present-day Point Hicks, and then proceeding north to Botany Bay. The expedition continued northward along the Australian coastline. In October 1770 they reached the port of Batavia in the Dutch East Indies. They resumed their journey on 26 December, rounded the Cape of Good Hope on 13 March 1771, and reached the English port of Deal on 12 July. The voyage lasted almost three years. Vickers of Sheffield in England manufactured armaments in the WWI period. In the early 1920s commenced manufacturing tractors under license to International Harvester. This tractor was aimed at the Australian market and called the 'Aussie' with the first available in 1925 but lack of sales forced Vickers to abandon tractor manufacture by 1930. This advertisement is part of the Uebergang Collection of rural items given into the care of the Cheese World Museum. . The Uebergang family came from Silesia to Australia in 1848 and were early settlers in the Allansford area. The sons and other descendants also purchased farms in the area. The Percy Uebergang family lived at Tooram Park, Allansford from 1912 until 1992. Percy and Myrtle Uebergang's children were twins, Ray and Joyce born in 1926 who lived at Tooram Park until their deaths, Ray in 1986 and Joyce in 1992 after which the property was sold. Neither Ray nor Joyce married and following the death of her brother Joyce set up the Ray and Joyce Uebergang Foundation which supports the local community. The collection of items from their property was put into store for a number of years before being given into the care of the Cheese World Museum. The family often re-used, recycled and repaired items and examples can be seen in the museum. This file contains two items pertaining to the property housing the Caulfield RSL: 1/A photocopy (2 pages) of an assessment of the property, dated 01/1997, by Andrew Ward, for purposes of ascertaining its historical significance. The assessment describes the architectural features of the property, offers a brief history of it, specifies why it should be considered significant, and recommends that it be added to the National Estate Register. Included is a black-and-white photograph of the exterior of the building. 2/An assessment (17 long pages plus appendix) of the car parking issues procured as a result of the decision to refurbish the Caulfield RSL. This representative example demonstrates a mariner’s astrolabe. Historical examples are rare. There are less than one hundred known to exist and most of these have been recovered from shipwrecks, many from Spanish and Portuguese vessels. An astrolabe is a measuring device once used to navigate the seas by observing the sun and stars to measure their altitude. The measurement of altitude could then be used to calculate the ship’s latitude but at that time in history there was no means of measuring longitude. The body of the navigational astrolabe was cast brass and much heavier, and less complicated than the variety used on land. The heavier weight and cut-away shape reduced the effect of the wind and waves when trying to use it at sea. A mariner’s astrolabe or ‘star finder’ is a simplified version than that used by Arabic astronomers to find the altitude of the sun and stars above the horizon, and time of the sunrise and sunset. It is a forerunner to the quadrant, octant and sextant and was popular for about 200 years over the 1500s and 1600s to find the latitude of a ship at sea. The user held the astrolabe at eye level and, usually with assistance, aligned the stars through the two small sights (pinnules), then read the altitude indicated by the pointer on the arm. It could also be used to sight the sun by holding it lower down, aiming it at the sun, and adjusting it until the sun shone through both pinnules. This astrolabe is an example used to demonstrate the mariner’s astrolabe, which was navigational tool of the 1500s and 1600s, in the time before longitude was able to be determined. This is No.1 the first Newsletter produced by CMHS members in August 1961. Topics : October 1960 Mayor Cr. D.H. Clark called a meeting in the Moorabbin Town Hall to form the City of Moorabbin Historical Society. Local residents attended including descendants of early settler families - Coates, LePage, Shipston - and a Committee was elected. Mr T.A.Sheehy, President, Mr R.Colbourne, Secretary, Mrs F.Wright, Treasurer set the Annual Membership Fee at 5/- ( shillings), arranged the next meetings at the Moorabbin Town Hall and began to compile a Newsletter to tell the ' story of Moorabbin'. The Cheltenham & District Society Co-operative Limited (est.1896) sponsored this 1st CMHS Newsletter published August 1961. The Aims of the CMHS are ‘to record the history of the City, and register something of the Australian Atmosphere, which the necessary speed-up in post-world-war two (WW11) immigration has caused to be lost; to produce a magazine at regular intervals, featuring the work of pioneers and the changing Australian scene; to work constantly with a long range view towards building a hall where records and exhibits can be housed’ The Original Newsletters reflect the history and heritage of the former City of Moorabbin — derived from Mooroobin, ‘a resting place’ in the Bunurrung spoken language. From 1988 to 2021, Legacy held a public speaking contest for young secondary school students. It was initially called the Junior Plain English Speaking Award (JPESA) and later called Legacy Junior Public Speaking Award (LJPSA). Schools were eligible to send along up to 4 representatives to compete in a preliminary round. This programme is from the 1990 Victorian finals at the MMBW Theatrette on 21 June. The Victorian winner in 1990 was Felicity McMahon from the Catholic College Bendigo who spoke on 'Old Age'. The following was taken from a programme in 1996: "The Award aim is to promote enhanced oral communication skills for 12-14 year old students and to help young people appreciate the ideals of Legacy - voluntary service, caring and comradeship - and the need for remembrance. It began in 1988 in the Melbourne area with the support of the Ministry of Education and The Plain English Foundation. Entries have grown from 24 in the 1988 competition to over 300 in schools across the State, plus greater numbers participating in the process of selecting four contestants from each school. In 1995, a successful Interstate Championship was held with contestants from Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. A copy of the minutes of a committee meeting that discussed The Presidents Fund and the Over 70 meetings. It mentions that the annual gatherings for member over 70 years of age, originally meant it was primarily for those who fought in World War 1. Now WWII members were nearing that age and criteria might need to be reassessed. The Over 70 meeting was a major contributor of funds for the Presidents Fund. Perhaps by 1986 the annual amount donated by the Berry Trust had ended (for many years $1000 a year was received from the fund set up by Legatee Walter Berry). The President's Fund was created in 1932 by a donation of £50 from Legatee Walter W Berry from his late father's estate "to help temporarily embarrassed Melbourne Legatees" towards the end of The Great Depression. The aim of the fund was the give the President a way to help needy cases with discretion and without having to gain approval from committees. In many cases the money was repaid by the recipient. This document was in a folder labelled President's Fund Correspondence with many other documents that included correspondence, receipts of donations and material about when money was given to help appropriate cases. The folder was marked with H40 which is part of an early archive project from the late 1960s and early 1970s.A record that there was an Advisory, Tradition and History Committee at Legacy. The Irish National Land League (Irish: Conradh na Talún) was an Irish political organisation of the late 19th century which sought to help poor tenant farmers. Its primary aim was to abolish landlordism in Ireland and enable tenant farmers to own the land they worked on. The period of the Land League's agitation is known as the Land War. Within decades of the league's foundation, through the efforts of William O'Brien and George Wyndham (a descendant of Lord Edward FitzGerald), the 1902 Land Conference produced the Land (Purchase) Act 1903 which allowed Irish tenant farmers buy out their freeholds with UK government loans over 68 years through the Land Commission (an arrangement that has never been possible in Britain itself). For agricultural labourers, D.D. Sheehan and the Irish Land and Labour Association secured their demands from the Liberal government elected in 1905 to pass the Labourers (Ireland) Act 1906, and the Labourers (Ireland) Act 1911, which paid County Councils to build over 40,000 new rural cottages, each on an acre of land. By 1914, 75% of occupiers were buying out their landlords, mostly under the two Acts. In all, under the pre-UK Land Acts over 316,000 tenants purchased their holdings amounting to 15 million acres (61,000 km2) out of a total of 20 million acres (81,000 km2) in the country. Sometimes the holdings were described as "uneconomic", but the overall sense of social justice was undeniable. At that meeting Charles Stewart Parnell was elected president of the league. Andrew Kettle, Michael Davitt, and Thomas Brennan were appointed as honorary secretaries. This united practically all the different strands of land agitation and tenant rights movements under a single organisation. The two aims of the Land League, as stated in the resolutions adopted in the meeting, were: ...first, to bring out a reduction of rack-rents; second, to facilitate the obtaining of the ownership of the soil by the occupiers. That the object of the League can be best attained by promoting organisation among the tenant-farmers; by defending those who may be threatened with eviction for refusing to pay unjust rents; by facilitating the working of the Bright clauses of the Irish Land Act during the winter; and by obtaining such reforms in the laws relating to land as will enable every tenant to become owner of his holding by paying a fair rent for a limited number of years. Charles Stewart Parnell, John Dillon, Michael Davitt, and others including Cal Lynn then went to America to raise funds for the League with spectacular results. Branches were also set up in Scotland, where the Crofters Party imitated the League and secured a reforming Act in 1886. The government had introduced the first ineffective Land Act in 1870, then the equally inadequate Acts of 1880 and 1881 followed. These established a Land Commission that started to reduce some rents. Parnell together with all of his party lieutenants, including Father Eugene Sheehy known as "the Land League priest", went into a bitter verbal offensive and were imprisoned in October 1881 under the Irish Coercion Act in Kilmainham Jail for "sabotaging the Land Act", from where the No-Rent Manifesto was issued, calling for a national tenant farmer rent strike which was partially followed. Although the League discouraged violence, agrarian crimes increased widely. Typically a rent strike would be followed by evictions by the police, or those tenants paying rent would be subject to a local boycott by League members. Where cases went to court, witnesses would change their stories, resulting in an unworkable legal system. This in turn led on to stronger criminal laws being passed that were described by the League as "Coercion Acts". The bitterness that developed helped Parnell later in his Home Rule campaign. Davitt's views were much more extreme, seeking to nationalise all land, as seen in his famous slogan: "The land of Ireland for the people of Ireland". Victorian Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (VIOSH) Australia is the Asia-Pacific centre for teaching and research in occupational health and safety (OHS) and is known as one of Australia's leaders on the field. VIOSH has a global reputation for its innovative approach within the field of OHS management. VIOSH had its first intake of students in 1979. At that time the Institution was known as the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. In 1990 it became known as Ballarat University College, then in 1994 as University of Ballarat. It was 2014 that it became Federation University. VIOSH Australia students are safety managers, senior advisors and experienced OHS professionals. They come from all over Australia and industry. Students are taught active research and enquiry; rather than textbook learning and a one-size fits all approach. VIOSH accepts people into the Graduate Diploma of Occupational Hazard Management who have no undergraduate degree - on the basis of extensive work experience and knowledge. The book outlines the importance of statistics and modelling in assessing accidents that may occur in industry. "The aim of this course is to present some central concepts of statistical theory and some mathematical models and techniques of analysis appropriate for the investigation and assessment of safety performance".
