Ballarat Clarendon College
Blazer pocket
This blazer pocket is from Ann (Price) Royal's Clarendon Presbyterian Ladies College blazer. Ann attended CPLC 1947 - 1957. Blazer pockets were embroidered with the school crest and additional embroidery was added during a student's years at College to reflect school colours and leadership roles. School colours were awarded for participation and leadership in various sport, house and academic pursuits. Ann's pocket, and the accompanying authorisation receipt reflect her receipt of the following awards: Athletics Colours (1952 - 1957), Hockey Colours (1954 - 1957) , Cairns House colours, school colours (1957) as well as leadership roles as Prefect (1957), House Captain (1957) and Sports Captain (1956). Students removed their pockets after graduation to keep as a momento of their school years. The authorisation receipt indicates that Ann's family chose not to have the final embroidery for Aths 1957, Hockey 1957 added to the pocket - probably because these awards would have been identified at the end of Ann's final school year. Significant reflection of school focus and individual attainmentBrown felt blazer pocket with braid across opening and embroidered crest and achievements; bottle green braid piece, multi-coloured braid piece; completed authorisation receipt for pocket embroidery made out to Harry Davies and Co Pty Ltd. Mission to Seafarers Victoria
Drawing - Digital copy, Building Publishing, Details of weather vane, Seamens' Institute building, Melbourne, Victoria, 12 September 1923
This sketch was published in Building : the magazine for the architect, builder, property owner and merchant, Vol. 33, No. 193 (12 Sept., 1923) but Walter Butler had imagined it in the design for the mission in 1916/17. In the article published in the Herald, Thursday 30 August 1917, page 12, it is mentioned the "the architect has designed a copper ship final for the main gable of the building and it, like the gymnasium, is awaiting the collection of more funds or the generosity of a special donor."The plans confirm that Walter Butler was the designer of the vane that he had already imagined in the early sketch of the Flinders Street building in 1916 and also help us determine when was the vane made. This article was published in 1923 and the first photograph of the weathervane was only published in the 1928 Annual Report. The plans are significant as they could potentially help rebuild the weathervane stole in March 2022. Carlton Football Club
Scrap Book, C1979
Mainly Pictorial record of Carlton's GF 1979 win over Collingwood by 5 points 1979 Summary After the early season problems with coaching staff in 1978, the Carlton team seemed to really gel under the stewardship of Alex Jesaulenko after he took over as coach early in the season. In fact, Jesaulenko had won 14 of his 18 games in charge. This late season form certainly carried over into the 1979, Jesaulenko's team winning its first 6 matches, before a narrow 4 point loss to North Melbourne in Round 7. Carlton would be the dominant team of the season, losing only two more games, to Geelong by 6 points in Round 12 and to Collingwood in Round 21 by 19 points. Measures of the Blues dominance include being on top of the ladder in 20 of 22 rounds, finishing 2 games in front of second place on the ladder, winning by at least 50 points eight times and having an average winning margin of over 40 points in the team's 21 victories. It topped 100 points in all but 2 matches (one of which was the Grand Final in muddy conditions)- a feat never achieved by any team before. After finishing clearly the best side of the home and away season, the team had a week break in the first week of finals before taking on North Melbourne in the first Semi Final. After a tense first quarter in which both sides kicked only a goal a piece, Carlton started to exert its dominance in the second quarter, but poor kicking for goal left the Kangaroos still in the match, with the Blues having a 14 point half-time lead. Carlton's seven goals in the thrid quarter killed the game as a contest, and 38 point winning margin probably flatters North considering that the Blues had 36 scoring to 18. This victory would give the team a place in the Grand Final and another week break. Collingwood defeated North Melbourne in the Preliminary Final to setup a Grand Final clash between the two old enemies. After a slow start Carlton would trail by 10 points at quarter-time, but would lead by 1 point going into half-time. A 5 goal third quarter gave the Blues a handy 21 point lead going into the last quarter, but poor kicking would again threaten the chance of victory for the team. Kicking 1.4 for the last quarter Carlton hung on to win by only 5 points and claim our 12th Premiership, equalling both Collingwood and Essendon for the most VFL premierships at the time. Coupled with the Premiership was the Norm Smith Medal to Wayne Harmes. Incredibly, the only Carlton goal for the quarter was the infamous Harmes tap to Sheldon, where Wayne Harmes followed up his terrible kick, knocking the ball with an amazing sliding punch to Ken Sheldon in the goal square who kicked the goal to win the match. To this day the debate about whether the ball Harmes tapped back was out of bounds or not. In the final analysis the Blues would win 11.16 (82) to 11.11 (77) in our first Grand Final appearance since 1973 to end our glorious 1970's era as it started, with a Premiership. Jesaulenko now had the enviable record of 35 wins and a premiership from 42 games as coach in less than two seasons in the position. Unbelievably he wouldn't be the Carlton Coach in the following season. Former Melbourne Lord Mayor Ian Rice issued a challenge to incumbent President George Harris for control of the club. Jesaulenko threw his support behind Harris, who had appointed him Coach the previous season. In a bitter and hard fought election, Rice would win and Jesaulenko would cross to St Kilda as their coach. Jesaulenko would again coach the Blues, being appointed after Robert Walls mid season sacking in 1989 until the end of the 1990 season. You may have noticed that the Round orders in this year appear to be slightly out of order. Please click here to find out why. At the lower levels, Carlton also won the Under 19's Premiership for the 6th time in 1979, following on from the Under 19's Premiership in 1978. The team list has been scanned in and can be viewed here. This was Carlton's last Under 19's Premiership with the competition disappearing after 1991. Overall, Carlton with 6 premierships was behind only Richmond with 11 and the Kangaroos with 7.A mainly pictorial record of 1979 Carlton Triumph over Collingwood. Accessory - Decorated Covid-19 Masks, 2020
The outbreak of Coronavirus COVID-19 in Melbourne in 2020 resulted in changed behaviours by the population. These changes included, at least in Kew, the placing of teddy bears in windows. In the final months of 2020, an easing of restrictions allowed members of the Kew Historical Society to meet face-to-face, including during the annual Christmas Dinner, on this occasion at the Greenacres Golf Club. At the event a decorated mask competition was held. Individual masks were donated by a number of attendees for the collection.A series of hand-made and adapted commercial masks worn during the COVID-19 pandemic in Melbourne at the annual Xmas Party of the Kew Historical Society. Attendees were advised that an award would be made to the creator/wearer of the best decorated mask. This was won by Jan Walker the owner of the pink patterned fabric beaded mask. Regular and annual minutes of the East Ringwood Progress Association from 2 May 1960 to 20 November 1961. The Nov 1961 meeting discussed the longevity of the Association and formed a sub-Committee to investigate. The Association was having extreme difficulty in attracting members and the valuable work, that it did in the past, had generally been completed, with the Council taking over any outstanding work. The final meeting was convened 20 months later and it was passed that the East Ringwood Progress Association be wound up and disbanded. The accrued funds would given to the East Ringwood Children's Library (see cheque butt) and the other assets to the East Ringwood Community Centre. -

Photograph, Battle of Beersheba - Limited Edition of 1917, Rememberance Day 2008
The battle of Beersheba took place on 31 October 1917 as part of the wider British offensive collectively known as the third Battle of Gaza. The final phase of this all day battle was the famous mounted charge of the 4th Light Horse Brigade. Commencing at dusk, members of the brigade stormed through the Turkish defences and seized the strategic town of Beersheba. The capture of Beersheba enabled British Empire forces to break the Ottoman line near Gaza on 7 November and advance into Palestine.Decisive victory at Beersheba fell to one of the last great charges of mounted troops in history. As Australian Light Horse Divisions captured the town and secured crucial water wells, their success also marked the beginning of the end of the war in the Middle East. This end came exactly a year to the day after success at Beersheba.Rectangular shaped glass covered picture frame showing the Light Horsemen.Charge of the Light Horsemen The Battle of Beershebabeersheba, the light horse, lara r.s.l.,world war one, battle of beersheba, ww1 -

Artwork, other - Coat of Arms, Ottoman Empire
Every sultan of the Ottoman Empire had his own monogram, called the tughra, which served as a royal symbol. A coat of arms in the European heraldic sense was created in the late 19th century. Hampton Court requested from the Ottoman Empire the coat of arms to be included in their collection. As the coat of arms had not been previously used in the Ottoman Empire, it was designed after this request, and the final design was adopted by Sultan Abdul Hamid II on 17 April 1882. The emblem features an ornate cartouche ensigned by a Tughra. The cartouche is surrounded by various elements of the state including two flags, the red flag of the Ottoman dynasty with a star and crescent and the green flag of the Islamic caliph, largely obscured by a cornucopia. Behind the flags are a number of spears and other weapons. Hanging beneath the lower flourish are the medals of five of the Ottoman decorations.ottoman empire, tughra
