The Eltham Apex Club conducted a Community Service Project (1965-1968) to raise funds for a new Ambulance Station to service the community. A site bounded by the intersection of Main Road, Grand Boulevard and Looker Road at Montmorency was purchased in 1969. In 1970, Eltham Shire Council undertook roadworks to construct Apex Way in preparation for the new station as well as duplicate Main Road, Lower Plenty, east of Grand Boulevard including the new Lower Plenty Bridge, which had been opened in November 1966, bordering with the City of Heidelberg. The Eltham Ambulance Station was opened 4 May 1975 by the Hon. Roy M. Vale, M.L.A. It was demolished in November 2017 to make way for a new larger station which also houses a MICA unit, opened 29 August 2018 by the Hon. In 1851 Moses Thomas purchased 400 acres, including a half mile frontage to the Plenty River, at Mernda (then known as Morang) where he operated a farm, inn and other business. In 1865 Moses Thomas was appointed Engineer, Clerk and Collector for the Morang District Road Board. In this role he would have been responsible for overseeing the collection of local property rates and the maintenance and construction of local roads and drains. Road District Boards were one of the earliest forms of local government in Victoria. The Morang or Upper Plenty Road District was established in 1862. It covered part of what is today Mernda, Doreen, South Morang, Mill Park and Bundoora. In 1875, the area merged with the Whittlesea Road District to form the Shire of Whittlesea. Moses Thomas briefly served as a Councillor with the Shire of Whittlesea until his death in 1878. Correspondence. Letter, paper, handwritten text with seal. The Independant order of Rechabites "Hope of Australia Tent No. 109" was formed in Harcourt in July 1869 and celebrated its centenary in 1969. With a strong -minded core of Methodists and members of the Church of Christ the group provided moral leadership and social framework to a wide area for a long time. At first they met in a small hall but, the lodge having inflamed partisan passions, the hall was deliberately burnt down in 1877. Undeterred the Lodge rebuilt the hall in the same year and thus provided the only district public hall. The Hall was sold by the lodge in 1937.; The Independent order of Rechabites, a temperance and social organsiation, was particularly strong in the Harcourt, Barkers Creek district, due to the high proportion of Methodists in the population, a demographic phenomenon resulting from the courage, prevalence and influence of Wesleyan lay preachers on the Mount Alexander Goldfields. The opening of Reid's Lightweight Aggregate Pty Ltd ( a subsidiary of Reid's Quarries Ltd) in Greensborough, circa 1960. Explains the method of manufacture and uses of shalite in building industry. The tree was one of two original red river gums that pre-dated European occupation, and was the site where colonists congregated to celebrate the announcement of Victoria's separation from New South Wales on 15 November 1850. Portrait of Edward Green. In the 1840s, Edward B. Green ran the mail service between Melbourne and Sydney and owned a parcel of land on the Plenty River. He engaged a surveyor to draw up plans and lay out a township on the slopes overlooking the river, and to mark out small farm holdings on the flats. This photograph shows one of the out buildings at 'Willis Vale', a property owned and farmed by the Partington family from the 1870s.
