Sixteen page printed report, stapled in top left hand corner, titled "Trams, Deficits move out as private buses move in", extracted from Truck and Bus Transportation March and April 1957, about the replacement of the trams in Geelong. Written by a bus person. Part 1 - Looks at the changeover from trams to buses, background to the tram service in Geelong, political issues, publicity, bus companies and areas operate, peak hour services, buses used, standards, traffic levels, miles operated, drivers viewpoints. Part II - looks at the savings by bus operations, no fare subsidies at the time, gives a table of losses on Ballarat, Bendigo and Geelong from 1931, track replacement costs, details of the three companies operating buses, Trans Otway, Benders and Corio Bus Lines and other operators in the Geelong region. Demonstrates aspects of the Ballarat Tramways system of training Motorman or drivers in the 1960's and the information there were given on driving trams. Shows the training methods of the time. 3486.1 - also details "Dead Man Brakes"Thirty Three page - carbon copy - within stapled light card covers - Ballarat Motorman (Driver) Training Manual or Guide - not a formal title. On front cover is large letter "G" and words "To be returned to the inspectors office after completion of Training as Motorman" First four pages has index and covers: (A) Tramcar Equipment - electrical - items or clauses 1 to 28 (B) Location of Faults - items 29 - 41 (C) Tramcar Braking - items 42 to 59 (D) Failure of the Mechanical Brakes - items 60 to 67 (E) Tramcar Emergency Braking (Accident Prevention) - items 68 - 72 (F) Automatic Electric Signals - items 73 - 82 - gives locations of signals. (G) General Instructions - items 83 to 98. See condition notes - not in the best condition - needs careful handling. 3486.4 - ditto - similar to above, but 34 pages through to instruction 104. Added section (F) after (E) - "Automatic Braking - clauses 72 - 79, possibly an earlier version of above when trams were fitted with dead man controls. Held within a cardboard folder with a metal binder. Cover has been covered with brown paper and adhesive tape, but only remains on the inside of the cover. Item added 3/10/2007. Demonstrates aspects of the SEC governance system in issuing By-laws for the travelling public, as part of their Act. Yields information about fares charged for tram services in Ballarat, Bendigo and Geelong. Issued to crews.Twenty page booklet, plus medium weight card light blue colour covers centre stapled. Book cover has title "Electric Tramways of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria, By-Law No. 11". Along the bottom edge is the date, "August 1951" and SEC print number - "TYE 1-27" Pages are numbered pages 1 to 20. Document give by-laws and amends the fare schedules for Ballarat, Geelong and Bendigo. Dated by the SEC 19/7/1951 to come into effect 1/7/1951 Details names of SEC Commissioners on rear page. James, a Ballarat, tramway inspector. .1 - Photograph of a Ballarat cricket team photographed with a grandstand in the background. Mounted in a red coloured cardboard folder, plain on inside. Photograph imprinted with "Vincent Kelly Bendigo" impression. Top left hand corner of folder has been marked with word "James", has pencil sketches of a persons face on it and other words. The photograph itself has cracking and crinkles in it. On the top of the photograph in a white label is number "2". Outside of cover has part of the red printed paper along the spine. Also has remnant cotton stitching through the spine. Dimensions 277H x 216D 2. - Photograph of a youthful cricket team, in front of a wooden grandstand. Each issue has a standard cover, of the magazine name etc, with a small advertisement for the Model Dockyard but are in different colours, all have been saddled stapled with two staples. The Volume and date details have been over stamped using a hand stamp. Back covers, inside back covers have the same advertisements. Thirteen typed, foolscap size, page (carbon copy) of the Commonwealth Court of Arbitration decision and basis for this decision made 14/6/1955 by Conciliation Commissioner E.W. Tokin. Notes history of dispute, MMTB, SEC, Adelaide, Hobart, Launceston, Ballarat, Bendigo and Geelong. Details basis for decisions of Contract of Employment, additional rates for trackman, time allowance at commencement and finish of duty, meals, training of traffic employees, special night allowances, margins. On bottom of page 5, the formal award commences: gives details of award duration, rates of pay, contract of employment, margins compared to the basic award, additional rates, hours of labour, shift work, overtime. holiday work, call forward and call back to duty, spread of hours, Saturday and Sunday work, special night allowances, time allowance at commencement and finish of duty, attending for duty, reporting for duty, meals, acting out of grade, surpluses and shortages, annual leave, sick leave, free travel uniforms, training of traffic employees, reports, union notices and punishments. Was stapled for all 13 pages with three staples on left hand side. Pages 10 to 13 have become unstapled.
