The Birney tram was named after its designer Charles Birney and was designated a "safety car". It was a type G tram that had a smaller wheel base and was designed specifically for routes with lighter traffic as it could only carry 50 passengers. It featured folding doors and steps and was the first tram that could be operated by the driver alone without a conductor. This particular tram was built in 1925 by the J G Brill Company in Philadelphia, USA. It was flat-packed to Adelaide where it was reassembled. It operator in Adelaide until 1935 when it was sold to Geelong before again being sold to the Bendigo Tramways in 1947. It continued to operate until the tramways closure in 1972. This card was presented to George Davidson when he passed the Junior School examination held by St. John's Tonic Sol-Fa Association in 1877. The Tonic Sol-Fa was a technique used for teaching sight singing, invented in the 18th century and further developed, popularised and used extensively by singing teachers in the 19th century. The St. John's Tonic Sol-Fa Association was an extension of the choir of St. John's Presbyterian Church in Warrnambool and the conductor (and the teacher whose name is on this card) was T. L.Campbell. He was a well-known singing and music teacher in Warrnambool in the second half of the 19th century and specialized in the teaching of the viola, violin and violincello. George Davidson (1860-1941) was the son of John and Isobel Davidson, pioneer settlers in the Warrnambool district.This card is of some interest as a memento of the music scene in Warrnambool in the second half of the 19th century with references to T.L. The Marion Tilley scrapbook is a significant record of performing arts in Melbourne during the 1950s and 1960s. The scrapbook includes programmes, photographs, newspaper reports and personal annotations which are a rich source of detail about repertoire, performers, and artistic sensibility in the period.Souvenir programme issued by the Creswick District Choral Society for a 'Grand Performance of Handel's Magnificent Oratorio The Messiah', in the Town Hall, Friday, December 23, 1904. With a chorus and orchestra of nearly 100 performers, the singers were Sopranos - Mrs. McGrath and Miss A. Horn, Contralto - Miss Bull, Tenor - Mr. V. Woolcock, and Bass - Mr. Marshall. The conductor was Dr. Nisbet. The reverse of the programme includes an advertisement for a Grand Sacred Concert on New Year's Night, Sunday January 1st, 1905 in the Town Hall.
