Port of Portland Authority archives On 19 November 1960, the Portland Harbour Trust was officially opened by His Excellency, The Governor of Victoria, Sir Dallas Brooks, in front of thousands of onlookers. It was one of the largest concentration of Premiers, Statesmen, industrial and civic leaders ever to attend an event outside of an Australian capital city. Today, Port of Portland is a busy modern port, handling in excess of $2 billion in trade. One of Victoria’s four major shipping ports, it handles bulk cargoes such as plantation woodchips and logs, grain, aluminium products, mineral sands, fertiliser, livestock and wind tower components. This forms part of the archives of the Port of Portland which were donated to the Glenelg Shire Cultural Collection by the Port of Portland. The collection documents the growth and significance of the Port of Portland.Back: Aerial view of section of Port and its surroundsport of portland, henty park, portland botanic gardens -

Uniform - Jacket, 19th-20th Century
This jacket appears to be part of the uniform, connected to Warrnambool through its sleeve labels, and to the sea, through its anchor and chain buttons. It may have been worn in the merchant navy by a senior seaman, due to the good quality of fabric and the double-breasted design, or to life saving at sea, such as a member of the Life Saving Rescue Crew, or even a Harbour Master. This jacket has been used for display on the ketch 'Reginald M', built in 1922 in South Australia and spending the final years of its life at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village from 1975-2016. The vessel spent much of its working life as a coastal trader along the south-eastern coast of Australia. This maritime jacket is significant for its connection with Warrnambool and to maritime service. Its high quality wool suggests that it was made for a senior ranking person. This jacket could have been used by a seaman in the merchant navy, which provided the essential service of transportation of goods and passengers between the ports of south-eastern Australia, including the Port of Warrnambool.Uniform jacket or coat, maritime. Heavy duty navy-coloured woollen jacket lined with light-weight woollen lining coloured blue with thin white stripe. Double-breasted front with eight buttons with the motif of anchor and chain. Two waist pockets on the outside, two breast pockets on the inside, closed with composition buttons on the lap, plus one spare button. Dark felt fabric labels were stitched to each sleeve just below the shoulder, with gold embroidered letters. book, History of Fort Queenscliff and the Australian Staff College, December 1971
"Fort Queenscliff, in Victoria, Australia, dates from 1860 when an open battery was constructed on Shortland's Bluff to defend the entrance to Port Phillip Bay. The Fort, which underwent major redevelopment in the late 1870s and 1880s, became the headquarters for an extensive chain of forts around Port Phillip Heads. Its garrison included volunteer artillery, engineers, infantry and naval militia, and it was manned as a coastal defence installation continuously from 1883 to 1946. The other fortifications and armaments around the Heads were completed by 1891, and together made Port Phillip one of the most heavily defended harbours in the British Empire." Built for William Wilmot Couche (1829-1890) probably in 1869. The architect was Lloyd Tayler (1830-1900) and it was designed in the polychromatic Lombardic style that had been introduced to Melbourne by the architect Joseph Reed (1822-1890). Couch was a prominent merchant and businessman. He founded the firm Couch Calder & Co, was director of several insurance companies and a member of the Melbourne Harbour Trust for many years. From about 1900 the house was renamed Wavenhoe. In the 1920s Wavenoe Avenue was constructed through its gardens and most of the land sold off including the blocks at the corner of Hotham Street and Alma Road. The house still stands opposite St Kilda cemetery.black and white photograph copy -

Functional object - Ship's Wheel from S S George Kermode, 1914
The Melbourne Harbour Trust Commission purchased the steam dredge SIR WILLIAM MATHEWS on 10 October 1941 from the Western Australian Government. Although the dredge was described as a suction dredge it was in fact a bucket dredge. After an overhaul, the vessel was renamed the GEORGE KERMODE and commenced operation in Victorian waters on 22 June 1942. The vessel was hired out to the Port of Burnie in 1945-46 but continued in the ownership of the Trust until 1 April 1976 when it was scuttled by the Department of Conservation, Forests and Lands as part of their artificial reef program. This program resulted in a number of reefs being established in Port Phillip Bay, including one off Carrum containing the wooden steamer URALBA.Timber and brass ship's wheel from center ladder hopper dredge George Kermode (formerly Sir William Mathews). Shipbuilders model, R W Miller
Original ship - 11,741 gross tons. 589' x 70' x 30' (179.5 x 21.34 x 9.14m). Oil tanker built by Eriksberg Motor Vessels at Gottenburg, Sweden in 1951 for Hjalmar Bjorge of Norway as the Storheim. Purchased November 1964 and renamed R W MILLER. Had a crew of 39 seamen, including the officers. 1973 sold to Independent Shipping Company Pty Ltd of Singapore. Renamed Cherry Victor. Scrapped 1979. Robert Miller traded under the name R W Miller and Company from early 1912. One of Miller's first contracts was to pick up overburden and spoil from the sinking of the Balmain Colliery shaft and dump it at sea. Miller saw the opportunity to sell this material and he ended up getting a sixpence a ton from a local council and other contractors for use as road bases and building foundations. This close association with coal led to Robert W Miller on 15th January 1913 being given the contract for coal distribution from Sydney Harbour Colliery (Balmain mine). So began a long association with coal. Miller built a fleet of lighters that were used to transport blue metal, sand and coal around Sydney Harbour. This introduction into coal transport opened a prospect for him to enter the larger coal shipping transport. During 1917 Miller purchased a vessel, the taking over 1985 by Howard Smith Industries Pty Ltd, Melbourne. Build date 1951-1979. Ship builders model of the tanker R W Miller in a glass case. Mug, Mary Rose Ehibition, Late 20th century
This is a souvenir mug produced for visitors to the ‘Mary Rose’ Exhibition in Warrnambool (December 1994 to February 1995). The ship ‘Mary Rose’, built in Portsmouth, England in 1509-10, was historically of major significance. She was the spearhead of a master plan to give England superiority on the high seas. Using new technology of the time, heavy artillery was mounted on the lower decks of this ship and this overloaded the ship. In 1545 she sank in Portsmouth Harbour with the loss of 700 lives as she was about to set sail to defend the English against the French invaders. In 1982 the hull of this ship was raised to the surface and the contents recovered. Over 200 items from the wreck were brought to Warrnambool and displayed in 1994-5 at the Warrnambool Art Gallery. This mug is of interest as it is a memento of the ‘Mary Rose’ Exhibition held in Warrnambool in 1994-5. This exhibition was an important event in the 1990s in Warrnambool and attracted many visitors. This is a cream-coloured china mug with a handle and a raised black and cream image of the ‘Mary Rose’ ship on one side and printed material in brown on the other side. It has the distributor’s name on the bottom with a map of Victoria and a brown dot showing the location of Warrnambool. 35mm Slide, Lake Wendouree circa 1950s
A view from the "Fairyland" area of the Wendouree Lake showing Mount Warrenheip in the background. Lake Wendouree is often considered the soul of Ballarat according to advertisements from the early 1900's saying "Sydney may have it's Harbour, Melbourne, it's bay but Ballarat has Lake Wendouree." This may have been Mrs.Strange's favorite spot to photograph the Lake, another image in this series captures the same area in a different mood. Mrs Bon Strange and her husband Bert were well known Ballarat residents. When Mrs Strange died some years ago, her extensive slide collection was sorted through and those relevant to Ballarat were gifted to the Ballarat Library.lake wendouree -

Tool - Candle Snuffer, circa 1840
The design of this brass candle snuffer allowed the user to reach up to the candle and hold the domed end over the flame. This prevented the flame from receiving oxygen, so the flame went out. This item was part of the original furnishings of the St Nicholas' Mission to Seamen's Church at 139 Nelson Street, Williamstown, Victoria. The charity began in 1857 when a Sailors’ Rest was opened in Williamstown to offer sailors of all colours, creeds and races a warm welcome. In 1859 the Ladies Harbour Light Guild came into being to support the work with services and facilities. Much of the furniture and furnishings were donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village by the Missions to Seamen Victoria on 29th May 1979, after the church closed. THE MISSIONS TO SEAMEN (Brief History: for more, see our Reg. No. 611, Set of Pews) The Missions to Seamen, an Anglican charity, has served seafarers of the world since 1856 in Great Britain. It symbol is a Flying Angel, inspired by a Bible verse. Today there are centr4es in over 200 ports world-wide where seamen of all backgrounds are offered a warm welcome and provided with a wide range of facilities. In Victoria, the orgainsation began in Williamstown in 1857. It was a Sailors’ Church, also known as ‘Bethel’ or the ‘Floating Church’. Its location was an old hulk floating in Hobson’s Bay, Port of Melbourne. It soon became part of the Missions to Seamen, Victoria. In the year 2000 the organisation, now named Mission to Seafarers, still operated locally in Melbourne, Portland, Geelong and Hastings. The Ladies’ Harbour Lights Guild was formed in 1906 to support the Missions to Seamen in Melbourne and other centres such as Williamstown. Two of the most significant ladies of the Guild were founder Ethel Augusta Godfrey and foundation member Alice Sibthorpe Tracy (who established a branch of the Guild in Warrnambool in 1920). The Guild continued its work until the 1960s. In 1943 a former Williamstown bank was purchased for the Missions to Seaman Club. The chapel was named St Nicholas’ Seamen’s Church and was supported by the Ladies’ Harbour Lights Guild, the Williamstown Lightkeepers’ Auxiliary and the League of Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Friends. It ceased operation in 1966. A Missions to Seamen Chapel and Recreation Room was a significant feature of ports during the late 1800s and into the 1900s. It seemed appropriate for Flagstaff Hill to include such a representation within the new Maritime Village, so the Melbourne Board of Management of Missions to Seamen Victoria gave its permission on 21st May 1979 for the entire furnishings of the Williamstown chapel to be transferred to Flagstaff Hill. The St Nicholas Seamen’s Church was officially opened on October 11, 1981, and closely resembles the Williamstown chapel. This candle snuffer is significant historically for its origin in the St Nicholas Mission to Seamen's Church in Williamstown, established in 1857 to cater for the physical, social, and spiritual needs of seafarers. It originated in Bristol, England when a Seamen's Mission was formed in 1837. The item is historically significant for its connection to the Ladies Lightkeepers’ Auxiliary, an organisation of women, formed to support seafarers. The connection of this item to the Mission to Seamen and to the Ladies Lightkeepers’ Auxiliary highlights the strong community awareness of the life of people at sea, their dangers and hardships, and their need for physical, financial, spiritual and moral support. Painting - Water colour painting of the ketch Falie, Falie, 1934
Arthur V Gregory b.1867, d.1957 worked from studio at 326 Albert Road South Melbourne established by his father G F Gregory in 1852. FALIE operated for many years as a cargo ship, largely around South Australia where it formed a strong regional association. During World War II, FALIE was requisitioned by the Royal Australian Navy for service, and was on patrol off Sydney Heads during the mini-submarine raid on Sydney Harbour in May 1942. After the war it returned to commercial service and was retired in 1982. It was then the last working ship representing the South Australian ketch fleet, and along with NELCEBEE ( HV000419) one of the last two working sail powered cargo vessels in South Australia.Water colour painting in painted gilt frameFalie off Cape Schank A.V. Plaque - Plaque, brass inscribed with Naval countermine information
Found in garden shed of Mr Harry Barratt [WWI Gallipoli] and donated by his grandson. In 1877 Swan island was designed to defend shipping in Port Phillip and Hobson's Bays. The scheme, involving massive expenditure, comprised a forward defence system of forts at Port Phillip heads dominated by Fort Queenscliff and South Channel Fort (artificial island), and a network of coastal batteries. Some development of fortification had occurred in the 1850s, but it was the impetus of the Jervois-Scratchley reports which led to major work being undertaken in the 1880s. The overall defence plan involved a combination of guns, mines (known as electric torpedo) and ships to defend the entrance to Port Phillip Bay. Swan Island Fort would be used to protect the minefields in the harbour, Naval observation countermine charge 500lbs wet G.C Standard mine from 1877 to 1905 when charge was removed and mines used as buoys.
