The beautiful book was gifted to a Miss M Muir in 1878 for Good Conduct and General Proficiency while a student at F J Thomas' Lyons Street Grammar School (for more information see Golden Heritage p31,40). The Ballarat College (Girls School) register lists a Maggie Muir as enrolling in 1881, the year F J Thomas’ school closed. It seems reasonable to consider Maggie Muir and Miss M Muir as one person. Frank Hurley was a photographer and member of Shackleton's Antarctic Expedition. Former Principal of the Ballarat School of Mines, Richard W. Richards, was a member of this expedition. He is the author of this children's information book which was also illustrated by Hurley, and won the Children's Book of the Year Award: Older Readers in 1948.Hard covered book with coloured image of a vessel in a rough sea glued onto the front. It is though this image was taken not long after Harry Arblaster became Principal at the Ballarat School of Mines. There were very few occasions when staff were required to wear an academic gown. This handwritten reference pertains to Samuel Baird, first student of Ballarat College and was provided and signed by the first Principal of the College, Robert Oliver McCoy. The letter was written on 27 March 1873. The letter remained in the family's keeping until July 2013 when it was donated to the school by a descendent of Samuel Baird. Social significance - The letter gives an indication of the values held by the school and deemed vaulable in the adult owrkforce in the 1870's. James Baines was principal of Torquay primary school, a local historian and genealogist and authority on Australian plants. He and his wife Ray were responsible for the manufacture and erection of street signs in the fledgling township of Torquay circa 1937. Br Purton was the retired principal of St Patrick's College Ballarat and this image shows the scene at Ballarat New Cemetery 28 September 1948, with graveside prayers being led by Fr John Shelley. This stamp comes from the Church of England Girls' Grammar School in Warrnambool which appears to have operated in the Church of England Parish Hall from 1911 to 1918.
