Three dates are listed as official Heritage Week events, Sundays 16th and 23rd April and Saturday 22nd. In addition, there will be a walk on Saturday 15th for Society Members. All walks will start at 1:00 p.m. in Panther Place near Shillinglaw Cottage. Each will take about four hours and the distance is about 5km. This 300 year old book deals with the theory of light and colour and with investigations of the colours of thin sheets, 'Newton's rings', and diffraction of light. Newton uses a wave theory of light and his corpuscular theory to explain his observations. Sir Isaac Newton (1643-1727) was a great figure in the history of optical science. His classic 'Opticks' was first published in English in 1704. This Latin edition of 1706 was published to satisfy a wider scientific audience in Europe. Newton was Lucasian Professor at Cambridge 1669-1693 and a fellow of Trinity College. He achieved fame as a creative mathematician and for his law of universal gravitation which explains planetary motions. He retired from research in 1693 to become a government official in London.This book is highly significant as a milestone in the study of optics. Although not a very rare book, only one other copy is listed by WorldCat in an Australian institution.Latin edition of Newton's 'Optics' translated by Samuel Clarke. This copy is bound in full calf leather of the period, 348 pages, with fold-out figures plus a 24 page appendix 'Enumeratio linearum tertii ordinis' and a 43 page appendix 'Tractus de quadratura curvarum'. The first owner, who also had land locally, was Frederick Nichols (1833-1904). The Buxton Hotel is located directly opposite the General Store. It was fronted with two huge oak trees and bordered and backed by large pine trees. It was a weatherboard structure with a painted corrugated iron roof. Old split wood shingles were covered by corrugated iron, which overlaid the shingles to make the roof watertight. Originally contained in a 'magnetic' photo album believed to have been donated by Mr Eric Stephenson, Jingalong, 110 Ryans Road, Eltham, Vic. 3095; relocated to archival safe storage. Sugarloaf Reservoir is situated on former farmland. This large water storage was completed in 1982 and serves Melbourne's northern suburbs. Within the visitor areas are two picnic grounds and other recreational facilities. Below its massive rock embankment is located the Winnecke Treatment Plan designed to purify its water before being piped into Melbourne. Its role for a period as home for local builder, Patrick Millane (compare no. 11 Gladstone Parade) is of interest. In 1889, a nine roomed brick house was in the course of erection on the site. The house was completed in 1890 and Millane took up residence. Millane continued as owner/ occupant in 1894. However, in 1899, although Millane still occupied the house, ownership had been taken over by the Land Mortgage Bank. By 1910, Andrew Brown was occupant. Occupancy passed to Edward Brown by 1920 and to Miss A.N. Brown by 1930. This copy book was used by Maggie McKay in 1902 when in 6th Grade at Meeniyan State School (no 3165) and was learning to write in the approved manner. Vere Henry Louis Foster (1819-1900), an educationist, philanthropist, and humanist, who worked devotedly to improve the situation of the Irish poor, published a series of these copy books to improve writing skills, as better literacy and penmanship meant better chances of employment. The books were first published in 1865 and were sold for 1 penny, a fraction of what they cost to produce. In the first year alone one million Foster's Copy Books were sold. The series of books taught children the alphabet and writing. The Boyds brought this vitamiser from their Camberwell home. Mandie Boyd, Robin and Patricia's eldest daughter, has very vivid memories of this gadget. "It made everything from milkshakes for us to mayonnaise, stuffing for chicken, soups, but especially I remember Robin in the kitchen using it to make daiquiris, endless ice, rum and lemon juice crushed and blended in the good old Vitamiser. He was wearing an amazing pale grey suit. American fabric beautifully cut, must have been synthetic, and had flecks of a darker grey through it, sounds hideous and was “of the time”. Quilt called "Diversions" and made by Barbara Macey in Melbourne in 1985. Barbara Macey is a founding member of the Running Stitch group and its sole remaining member. This quilt was part of a touring exhibition called "Wool Quilts Old and New" presented by Running Stitch, 31 Jan. 1986 to Feb. 1987. It was catalogue entry no. 6. The artist's statement reads: "Being of Scottish descent, I was most interested to discover the Scottish Herringbone quilt, made of pieces of wool tweed, sewn herringbone fashion, to strips of fabric later seamed together to make a quilt. Having a variety of wool fabrics to work with inspired this interpretation of a traditional idea." These graves are situated at a small medieval church that is a popular baptismal and wedding church. It is part of the Råbelöv estate in Kristianstad Municipality, Scania, in southern Sweden. They are the graves of Douglas and his brother. In 1906, the eldest son of James Kennedy, Douglas Kennedy, the future fidei commissioner, took his life. Four years later another son took his life. James and his wife took the disasters hard, they fell ill. The young son Gilbert got in 1908, only 22 years old, took over responsibility for the farm. James son Gilbert Kennedy took over as Fidei Commissioner in 1916 and they became known as outstanding farmers with, among other things, grazing for dairy cows and fruit growing as specialties. These binoculars belonged to Lieutenant Thomas Spencer Howard, 8th Australian Light Horse Regiment. Howard was killed in action in the charge at the Nek, Gallipoli peninsula, on 7 August 1915. Howard was a 25-year-old grain dealer from Melbourne when he enlisted in the AIF and was appointed a lieutenant in the 8th ALH on 24 October 1914. He had pre-World War One service with 10th Light Horse (VMR), 11th & 29th Light Horse Regiments. Prior to sailing he was presented with these binoculars: “Lieut TS Howard 8th LH, 3rd Aust Imp Exped’y Force, From Chief and Staff of J.F.C. Jan 1915”. A photo of Legacy boys on the steps of Blamey House. Blamey House (purchased 1947) , Stanhope (purchased 1945) and Harelands (purchased 1950) were residences run by Melbourne Legacy to take care of children whose fathers were servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself. Harelands accomodated boys and girls under the age of 14, Blamey House looked after boys over 14, and Stanhope looked after girls over 14. The children were cared for until they were old enough to become independent. The man in this photo is labelled ‘Bob Wight’, who was the Superintendent of the house with his wife Jane. A photo of a group of 7 men and 11 young men at Big Camp 1973, held at Lord Somers Camp. Big Camp was for older youths. The camps gave the children an opportunity of a summer beach holiday with other Legacy children. Melbourne Legacy provided camps for junior legatees - the children of deceased servicemen. It started with outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring near the beach. Permanent camp buildings were built in 1930. In 1930 Lord Somers (Governor of Victoria) also started a camp at a nearby property and the area was renamed Somers. The hospital was first mooted in 1853. The first site chosen was "Hospital Hill" between Rowan and Mackenzie Streets and behind the present Lister House School of Nursing. The first building was a primitive affair of slab and weatherboard daubed with clay somewhere near the middle of the present Short St - which at the time extended to the brow of the hill behind the Sacred Heart Cathedral site. The new building was greatly need to serve the hundreds of diggers then active on the field. Messrs Vahland and Gezchmann, Architects, designed a new building of stone and brick, the cenre portion of the hospital to hold 100 beds. This centre portion cost 12,000 pounds and was erected in three months. The certificate was awarded to Dorothy Richardson, a pupil of Kew Primary School. Forty-two buttons, created to support the war effort, surround the certificate. The Young Workers’ Patriotic Guild was formed in Victorian schools in 1916. Each child who raised one pound ‘by personal productive effort’ received a certificate. The money was used for the war effort. Wesley PEMBERTHY (1920- ) Born Broken Hill, New South Wales Wesley Pemberthy spent his childhood in Adelaide, South Australia. As an adult he lived in Bendigo, Ballarat, Clunes, Creswick, Daylesford and Perth. While in Perth he studied at Perth Technical School (1933-1937), followed by studies under the tutorship of Norman Lindsay in New South Wales (1938-1941). After service during World War Two Wes Pemberthy became the first Rehabilitation student at the National Gallery School, Victoria, undertaking research into the techniques of the Old Masters. He was the winner of the Sulman Award in 1955. Stanhope was a residence run by Melbourne Legacy to take care of children whose fathers were deceased servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself, or they needed to stay in Melbourne for further education. Stanhope generally looked after girls over 14 either studying or working. The children were cared for until they were old enough to become independent. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. Murray Comrie Collection. This photograph shows the blacksmiths premises on the north end of Commercial Road, Tarnagulla. Information collated by Murray Comrie: This building was demolished in the 1970s. The first use of the site was as the George Hotel licensed to an A.B. Clay in 1858, then Waller and Robinson. Charles Waller operated his Excelsior Line of coaches from the George Hotel stables. John Ousley took over the stables for use as a blacksmith's shop. He sold out to Stafford & Sons in 1908. Staffords found the existing premises at the George Hotel too small and built this building. Frank McNamee later took over the premises and operated it for many years. This photograph is a reasonable copy created from an older original. Copy probably made by Murray Comrie in the 1970s. A Legacy ceremony at the Shrine of Remembrance. One of the annual "Anzac Commemoration Ceremony for Students" events, usually held just prior to ANZAC Day. The ceremony provides a valuable opportunity for students to gain an appreciation of the Anzac spirit, the significance of the Shrine and the meaning of Anzac Day. The photos shows a crowd of school children facing the forecourt of the Shrine with many assembled on the steps. It appears there was a flagpole erected in the forecourt. The photos were in an envelope from The Argus and The Australian newspaper, addressed to Legatee Gillespie. Items were in an envelope with other photos and programmes from different School Student ceremonies. Celebrations for the 80th Anniversary of Legacy were held in the grounds of Government House in 2003. The note with the photos says: "Legacy's 80th Anniversary Function Over 1200 people recently attended Legacy's 80th Anniversary Function. The sun streaming through the picturesque garden surroundings at Government House contributed to the success of the day. Many of the guests enjoyed catching to the success of the day. Many of the guests enjoyed catching up with friends and acquaintances that go back a long way. Some had not seen each other for decades and there was much excitement renewing old friendships. The guests were entertained by The Royal Australian Navy Jazz Ensemble and the MC was David Mann from Radio 3AW." See also 00990, 00991 and 00992.
