Hospital 27.4.1916 (unclear) rejoin unit 28.4.1916, embark for France 2.6.1916, taken on strength of 1st Anzac Army Corps LH Regt 7.7.1916, hospital 4.10.1917 with “Boils, Debility”, from here he is diagnosed with Chronic Bronchitis and returns to Australia 21.4.1918, discharged Medically unfit 17.7.1918.1. Circa early 1900s. Flour was a staple ingredient of bread, as well as being used for general cooking. This 7lb bag of flour would have been purchased for domestic use by a housewife living in the Moorabbin district. Used bags were often made into shade blinds, underwear, sleepwear, aprons by the industrious early settlers who could not afford to waste any material.This flour bag is typical of the type that would have been found in every housewives' kitchen in the Moorabbin district. It recalls the fact that flour was being made in Melbourne. Unbleached, cotton bag., with faded black lettering. Silk Handkerchief, Souvenirs of France 1914 - 1918, 1914 (estimated)
During the 1914-1918 war these souvenirs were sent by a soldier to his sweetheart, his fiancee. The handkerchiefs are made of pure silk. Sadly the soldier was killed on the battlefield and did not return home. His fiancee remained true to his love for the rest ofher life, laughing away the proposals of any other admirers. Her name was Ada. She is 97 years of age and now lives in Tasmania and was once a friend of Beannie Cummins (dec) of Alexandra.White silk handkerchief with a 1.5 cm drawn thread hem. In one corner is embroidered Souvenir de France in brown colour. The rest of the embroidery include two flagpoles, one with France's flag, one with a British flag. There is a red rose of France at the bottom of the flagpole scattered green leaves throughtout the embroidery. Founded in 1856, the Mission adopted, as its symbol, a flying angel inspired by a verse from the Book of Revelation (14:60) “Then I saw a flying angel in mid-heaven, with an eternal gospel to proclaim to those on earth, to every nation and tribe, language and people” The mission to Seamen became the Mission to Seafarers at turn of the 20th to 21st century. A new logo and graphic of the Angel of the revelation was produced.The change from seamen to seafarers recognised that many seafarers are not exclusively male. Permewan Wright & Co Ltd were one of the biggest shipping agents on the Murray in the 2nd half of the 19th century. They were a cartage company established in 1856 in Geelong, who opened one of its twenty Victorian branches at Echuca in 1875.
