Laurence SCOTT PENDLEBURY (1914 - 1986) Born Melbourne Laurence Scott Pendlebury studied at the National Gallery of Victoria School between 1932 and 1938 and then at Swinburne Technical College. He served during World War Two with the AIF between 1941 and 1945. Teaching at Swinburne Technical College between 1946 and 1963 Laurence Scott Pendlebury was head of the art school from 1963 until his retirement in 1974. He was president of the Victorian Artists’ Society from 1961 to 1963. Awards include: Dunlop Prize in 1950, 1951, 1953 and 1954; Gibson Prize, Victorian Artists’ Society in 1956; Wynne Prize in 1956, 1957, 1960 (shared with John Perceval) and 1968; Caltex Prize in 1957; Victorian Artists’ Society Artist of the Year (shared) in 1975. Portrait of Nornie Gude, the artist's wife, holding a violin. Nornie Gude was a student of the Ballarat Technical Art School, a division of the Ballarat School of Mines. Nornie Gude was the daughter of Walter Gude, a leding musician, and highly regarded teacher. She grew up in Ballarat and was educated at Loreto College. From 1931 to 1936 Nornie Gude attended the Ballarat Technical Art School, a division of the Ballarat School of Mines. She was accepted into the School at the age of 15 because she was so advanced in painting. Nornie Gude studied at Ballarat for five years before progressing to Melbourne’s National Gallery of Victoria School. As a violinist Nornie Gude played for more than a decade with the Zelman Orchestra. An electrified tram route from Melbourne along High Street replaced an original Horse Tram that terminated at the Kew Cemetery. This new tram only reached the bridge over the Outer Circle railway at the Harp Junction. This book was hand made in Bendigo and presented to the Army Survey Regiment Sergeants Mess by WO2 Graham Squire (Later WO1 RSM RASvy). The book is to record events when the Sgts Mess Bell was rung, signaling that money was put over the bar for those present. Events such as promotions, departures, birthdays, birth of children and grandchildren were celebrated in this way and hence recorded in this book. The Bell itself was presented by WO1 Alex "Darby" Munro and that is the reason for the naming of the book "Darby's Clangers, Times and Chimes". the first entry in the book is 30 Nov 1978 and the last entry is 29 Nov1996 to celebrate the departure of the last serving members of the unit.Large handmade book with many unused pages, book is housed in a vinyl covered cardboard box.Page 1 Top - " Please leave first entry space vacant for WO2 G Squire (Fishing Warden), Thank you, Max Neil WO2 for PMC" Page 1 Bottom - "The one that got away!" Two letters (stapled together) from T H Williams, Country Organiser from the Federated Municipal and Shire Council Employees' Union of Australia - Victorian Division, one to The Town Clerk (pink copy) and the other to J Richmond. The Town Clerk's letter, dated 21/12/1978 refers to the replacement of a 20' extension ladder, electric power leads, and new oilskin wet weather gear. Signed by T H Williams. The letter to J Richmond, dated 20/12/1978 mentions Service Grants to the workers. Has a strong association with the story of the BTPS in its first four years, developing the Museum, acquiring additional trams and a brief history of the SEC trams in Ballarat.Newspaper clipping from The Courier, Ballarat, dated 10/1978, titled "Ballarat's tourist tramway carries 100,000th passenger". Printed in a "Courier Tourist" Section, gives details of the 100,000th passenger, BTPS history, that of the trams in Ballarat, closure. On the rear of the sheet continues story and gives details of the then BTPS fleet (14, 26, 27 & 28, 48 and 40). Notes that the BTPS had by then acquired No. 39, W3 661, W4 671, 33 and 11, 121, 35 and X1 463. Features photos of a bus and single truck trams together at Grenville St, a horse tram arriving at Grenville St and a photo of the BTPS depot with No. 40, 27 and 28 on the depot fan. Written by Campbell Duncan for the BTPS c1978, giving details of the history of Ballarat's tramways, and a brief history of Geelong and Bendigo, the formation and operations of the BTPS and the tramcar fleet. Has 10 photographs, 1 sketch of the front of a maximum traction tramcar and a map of the BTPS location on the rear. Map drawn by G. Inglis 2.73. Note no credits for photographs. This program was for an event to celebrate the golden anniversary 950 years) of the official opening of Orbost's Commonwealth Hotel. It was organised by Chas and Una Roberts (nee Marshall) and was a fund-raiser for O.C.C.A. (Orbost Continuing Care}). This group was initiated by Brenda Murray who was the founding chairperson of the Orbost Continuing Care Appeal, which raised money to build an aged persons' facility for Orbost. The evening was compered by Graeme Eddy. The performers included: Victoria Strait, Leslie Strait, Norma Williams, Pauline Strait, Hoard Oberg and Wayne Stuart. All were accomplished musicians from New South Wales. The event took place at 6pm on Saturday September 2 1978.This item is associated with the Commonwealth Hotel which has been operating in Orbost since January 1901.A white paper program with black print.It is one sheet folded.On the back is a picture of the Commonwealth Hotel, Orbost with a brief history of its establishment underneath the photograph. On the front side is the title, "an evening of baroque music and a golden invitation to dinner". There is a stylised drawing of a saxophoene, drum and cello.
