Local newspaper clipping - 15/3/1945 - Passing of Old Pioneer.Born in Gloucestershire, England ... Settled in Ringwood and was employed at the old Federal Brickyards. It was here that he lost his arm, getting his hand caught in machinery. This handicap did not greatly interfere with his working capacity, and for years he was employed as carter at Bamford's timber yards. He married and settled down at Mt Dandenong Road, Ringwood East and acquired various properties. Interred Box Hill Cemetery on Friday, 9th March.

Mrs Caroline de Graaf photographed in 1929. Caroline and James de Graaf were married in 1885 and came to live in Surrey Hills. They had two blocks of land at 13 Charles Street. At first James rode his bicycle to his work in Richmond and each week Caroline would walk to Richmond carrying her baby to see her parents. They would put their shopping on the bike and walk home in the evening. Eventually train schedules suited them and they were relieved to be able to use the train for the trip. Mr Walter Sessford Cornhill was born in c1886 in Orsett, Essex; died 2 September 1940 and buried in Box Hill Cemetery (B-069-0028). He was a carpenter. He married Rhoda Fraser (1882-1947). A son John Edmund was a plumber. Daughter Lillian married Charles Frederick Barrow. Walter Cornhill moved from 3 Essex Road to 316 Canterbury Road some tome after 1937. The house passed to Charles Frederick Barrow and wife Lillian and subsequently to Leonard Clement Gangell and his wife Pamela Gangell, nee Barrow.A black and white photograph of an early modern style house built on a corner block. This is one of two books donated together and believed to have belonged to the Purvis family. The books were rescued from recycling. It has the name of C A. Purvis on the front endpaper. The other book from the same donor has the inscription "C. Purvis". The inscription on the back endpaper of this book is of interest, 'Edith Fox, Gheringhap, 1879' as it is earlier than the earliest journal in the book. Perhaps it is the birth date of Edith. It is also interesting that an notice was printed in the Geelong Advertiser in 1922 stating that Edith Susan Fox of Box Hill had an interest in land in Gheringhap. Gheringhap is a town on the Midland Highway, Victoria, 15 km northwest of Geelong, and 6.7 km southeast of Bannockburn. This is one of two journals of ladies fashion, fancy work and stories that reflect the interests of women the late 1800s. They are a useful source of historical information and include advertising and thought provoking articles .Young Ladies Journal 1884 - 1885; a collection of journals in a burgundy leather-bound spine and hardcovers with a black, blue, burgundy and cram pattern. The Journal contains illustrations and articles of a wide variety including fashion, fancy work and family reading. Inscriptions are on the spine and the front and back end pages. Inserted between pages is a loose Christmas Magazine from The Sun, dated 24th Dec 1954. The game was played across paddocks from Trafalgar Street, Mont Albert to Whitehorse Road and down Victoria Crescent to where Box Hill TAFE is now located in Elgar Road. There were problems with cows eating the tee flags! The clubhouse still exists as 30 Trafalgar Street. No 3 Beatty Street is in the background. This and No 24 ‘Thulecroft’ were built in 1907/08 by brothers-in-law Harrison Rotherham & William Buchanan. They used a process new to Melbourne at the time – making concrete bricks for which they used sand from Middlesex Road. Harrison Buchanan, son of William, is the small boy in the photo. Mont Albert was one of a number of local government schools which provided both primary and some secondary education. The term Central School was quite common in Melbourne from at least the 1920's and was used to refer to a school that went up to year 8 or form 2. The reference to the C.S.A. Sports probably refers to the Central Schools Association, or perhaps a shortening of C.S.S.A. (Central Schools Sports Association). A later over-arching association was known as the V.P.S.S.A. (Victorian Primary School Sports Association - now School Sport Victoria.) Ferdinand von Mueller was born at Rostock, Germany, on 30 June 1825 , died at Melbourne, Australia, on 10 October 1896. He studied pharmacy and took his Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Kiel in 1847. He came to Australia in 1848 for health reasons and became a great botanical collector and writer. He was Victorian Government Botanist from 1853, and for a time Director of the Botanic Gardens. He travelled widely in Victoria and was on the A.C.Gregory expedition to northern Australia in 1855-57. He supported botanical exploration and collecting throughout the colonies. 681.3 was presented to Carl Grove from G. Tadgell of Flemington. Charles Henry [Carl] Grove died on 17/4/1938 at Box Hill at the age of 88 and was buried in Orbost. Prior to coming to the Snowy River district, Carl worked as overseer on Buchan Station. In 1880, he selected land at Newmerella after first coming here in 1874 with early selector James A Robertson.He was one of the first selectors at Orbost - in 1880 he selected 320 acres at Newmerella, which he called „Ulinda‟ He married Annie Robertson in 1876. Carl was a farmer, hop and seed grower and nurseryman. He was an elected Councillor of the newly formed Tambo Shire in 1882, and then in 1892 to the Orbost Shire where he served for many years filling varioius public roles. In 1911, he shifted to Queensland, but later returned to Victoria and died at Box Hill. (Ref. Nov 2014 Newsletter) Mueller was one of the first people to take a scientific interest in Victorian forests, and argued against indiscriminate clearing of land. This item is a useful research tool. The parade was held in celebration of King Edward VII's birthday on 4 July 1902. This was the first public appearance of the German Band formed on 30 May 1902. The leading horseman is Mr Rowland Coe. He is followed by Mr George Robinson, a butcher of Canterbury Road. The man in the white hat is Mr Sam Kellett, businessman of Erasmus Street. Behind him on foot and partly obscured is Mr Alexander McNeill of the Surrey Family Hotel. Band master is Harry Pollard, painter and paper-hanger, and next to him is Constable Hill. The small boy in the sailor suit is Perc Venman of Essex Road and in the buggy near the footpath is Mr and Mrs William Maling. Information came from David Staig senior. Further research: William Saunders Maling, a son of John Butler Maling, was a builder who lived at 17 Balwyn Road, Canterbury. Rowland Coe, a butcher and son of James and Elizabeth Coe of Sunbury Crescent enlisted in AIF in WW1. He later lived at 233 Elgar Road, Box Hill. William Percival Reginald (Perc) Venman was born in Surrey Hills in 1894; he died in Surrey Hills in 1951 and lived at 27 Essex Street for much of his life. He and his wife are buried in Box Hill Cemetery. The identity of Sam Kellett of Erasmus Street is questioned. Edward Kellett built 'Yielma' in Erasmus Street but was deceased by 1902. This is one of two books donated together and believed to have belonged to the Purvis family. The books were rescued from recycling. It has the name of C Purvis on the front endpaper. The other book from the same donor has the inscription "C. A. Purvis". The inscription on the back endpaper of the other book belonging to C. Purvis is of interest, '"Edith Fox, Gheringhap, 1879"' as it is earlier than the earliest journal in that book. Perhaps it is the birth date of Edith. It is also interesting that an notice was printed in the Geelong Advertiser in 1922 stating that Edith Susan Fox of Box Hill had an interest in land in Gheringhap. Gheringhap is a town on the Midland Highway, Victoria, 15 km northwest of Geelong, and 6.7 km southeast of Bannockburn.This is one of two journals of ladies' fashion, fancy work and stories that reflect the interests of the late 1800s. They are a useful source of historical information and the articles available for sale.The Ladies' Home Journal 1891- 95; a collection of women's journals in a burgundy hardcover book with a leather-bound spine and leather-reinforced corners. The journals are illustrated magazines and include fashion, fancy work and family reading, Published in Philadelphia, America by the Curtis Publishing Company. The binder was made by G Mercer, Geelong. A printed blue label is on the inside front cover. In 1882 the railway from Melbourne to Camberwell was extended to Lilydale, Blackburn Station was then known as Blackburn Greek Station and was opened on 2 December 1882. At this time the Lilydale line had only a single track. On 12 August 1889 Blackburn was designated as a 'crossing station' as it had 2 platforms. In 1891 a second line was added between Box Hill and Ringwood stations. Service termination at Blackburn began in the late 1890's due to the large number of passengers visiting the Blackburn Lake Sanctuary. The Lilydale line was electrified to Ringwood in January 1923. Automatic signalling reached Blackburn in 19568. Boom gates replaced hand gates in 1970. in 1980, the goods siding was removed and the old station was demolished.Coloured photograph of the south side of the Blackburn Station. This belonged to Sue Slonek, who at the time was Secretary of the Surrey Hills Historical Society and an active volunteer working with the collection. She died unexpectedly and this and a book were formally donated to the collection by her son Alex. Wilfred Shipman Bishop was Sue's father. As a young man he grew up at 21 Grovedale Road, Surrey Hills. His father Frederick James Joseph Bishop was a bookbinder. Wilfred enlisted in the AIF in WW2 (V46365). He married Lucy Isobell Legge in 1943. They had 4 children - Sue and 3 boys. 1st Mont Albert Scouts meet in the scout hall at Surrey Park, where they share facilities with 9th Box Hill Scouts.A Black and white photo within a brown matt board of 25 boys and young men dressing in scout uniform. The house was built in 1913 for Mr James Rubira and named for his wife Emilia Tajouera Guidotti, an Italian opera singer. She was born in 1865 and died in Surrey Hills on 21 October 1950. James was born in 1863 in Allela, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain and died on 8 November 1935 in Surrey Hills. They married in Victoria in 1892. They married in 1892. James's mother was a member of the Parer family. The Rubiras and the Parers were among a number of Spanish families who began to migrate to Australia in the 1860s. James' mother was Teresa Florentina Lluisa Parer. Many of the families settled in Box Hill and then Surrey Hills by the 1900s. Prior to subdivision for housing this area was paddocks used for grazing of cattle and used as part of the course in the early days of the Surrey Hills Golf Club. There were problems with cows eating the tee flags!
