Sixty-three men and boys were invited to the picnic. Miss Ethel Godfrey is kneeling on the right hand side, wearing a dark dress and hat. The man holding the ball in the center is thought to be Hugh H. Reid. In an article published in the Church and the Sailor in July 1930 after she resigned from her position of Honorary Secretary, she described this occasion as the first picnic organised by her after Reverend Gurney Goldsmith pleaded for women's help during a sermon at All Saints church in St Kilda the same month. See also item 1643This was the official first picnic of the Amalgamated Victorian Seamen's Mission and the first picnic organised by Miss Ethel Godfrey. A year later she was nominated Honorary Secretary of the newly Ladies Harbour Light Guild. The original South Wangaratta Primary School served the district for over 110 years and closed in December 1985 before moving to new premises. III GR on the top of the truncheon refers to King George the Third (r. 1760-1820). The truncheon was probably used by police during his reign.A heavy wooden truncheon 66 centimetres long and three centimetres diameter. There is a hole two centimetres from the top to put a lanyard through. The top seven centimetres is painted red with lettering (roman numeral 3) GR. The next nine centimetres is painted green with a gold and red crown painted on it. The next six centimetre section is yellow with gold lettering, G.P.A. and 1797 underneath.
