The Presidents Fund was created in 1932 by a donation from Legatee Walter W Berry from his late father's estate "to help temporarily embarrassed Melbourne Legatees" towards the end of The Great Depression. The aim of the fund was the give the President a way to help needy cases with discretion and without having to gain approval from committees. In many cases the money was repaid by the recipient. These letters record the first donation of £50 and discussions with Legatee Walter Berry about how the donation was to be used. Also a copy of the letter of 24 February 1933 when President Kemsley wrote to the Howard and Georgina Berry Trust Fund formalising the use of the donations. This document was in a folder labelled President's Fund Origin and Authorisation with many other documents that included correspondence, receipts of donations and material about when money was given to help appropriate cases. Charles Meynell Pitt Withers (aka Bill) was the son and last child of artist Walter Herbert and Fanny (nee Flinn) Withers. He was born February 5, 1902 at Heidelberg and baptised April 4, 1902 at St John's, Heidelberg. The family moved to Southernwood at the corner of Brougham and Bolton streets, Eltham in 1903. The new Warrnambool Methodist Church was opened on 1st April 1939. The Church complex was designed by Messrs A.S. and R.A. Eggleston and built by J.D.E. and T. Walter. It comprised a church seating 430 people, an assembly hall seating 300, kindergarten and primary classrooms. The three ministers present in the photograph were: Rev B. Wylie (Hamilton), Rev N. Emil Jackschowsky was born in Insterburg (Prussia then Germany now Russia). He met Mary Schwerkolt aboard the 'Seydlitz' on its way to Australia. He was working as a ships steward. They married in Pittsburg in U.S.A in 1912. While visiting family in Germany he was conscripted. His son Walter was born in 1919. Emil became an American citizen in 1928.
