The back page of the programme includes details of previous productions: 1950 - The Resignation of Mr. Bagsworth, The Shirt, 1951 - Richard of Bordeaux, 1952 - Ned Kelly, 1953 - Saint Joan, 1954 - Treasure Island 1955 - Toad of Toad Hall, and 1956 School for Scandal. Arthur Henry Dear was an employee of the City of Kew, acting as Hall Keeper of the Kew Recreation Hall in Wellington Street, and later the new Kew City Hall in Cotham Road. The Arthur Dear Collection contains memorabilia - tickets, programmes, invitations - as well as his identification badge. Items in the collection dates from the 1940s to the 1960s. The Kew Recreation Hall (Wellington Street) and later the Kew City Hall (Cotham Road) were major locations in suburban Melbourne in the postwar period for civic and private events including theatre productions and exhibitions. The Arthur Dear Collection (in conjunction with the scrapbooks compiled by Marion Tilley) provide a comprehensive snapshot of performing arts in Kew during the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. The collection includes valuable data about performances, performers, directors etc., during this period. Public lectures were a common activity in Bacchus Marsh in the early 1900s. These were usually held in the Mechanics Institute Hall in Main Street, or in the Australian Natives Association (ANA) Hall also in Main Street Bacchus Marsh. This ticket is a typical example of the elaborate design used for invitations at this time. This lecture was promoted as an 'illustrated lecture'. In this instance it was according to contemporary newspaper reporting a lecture which included a series of 'lantern views'. These were pictures—paintings, prints, or photographs—on transparent plates (usually made of glass), and were then projected for viewing through an image projector commonly called a 'magic lantern'. This book has been compiled by W H C Darvall, the Honorary Secretary at the Mission,( turn of 19th- 20th C.) A chronological recording of key dates and events in relation to the workings of the Mission to Seafarers (Victorian Seamen's Mission). The book also includes a number of clippings from newspapers or journals and concludes with an invitation to attend a special meeting of the Mission to discuss a proposed amalgamation with the Victorian Branch of the London Missions to Seamen, 15 November 1905. The author Mr Darvall arrived in Australia as a migrant 1853, served as the first Town Clerk of Beechworth 1856-1870. A solicitor in Collins St 1870s onward, he died in 1906.In diligently recording "matters of interest" to the Mission, Darvall has provided us with a significant point of reference from the establishment of the Victorian Bethel Union, afloat in 1850s through to the proposed amalgamation with the Missions to Seamen finalised in 1906. Many of the events were compiled retrospectively drawing on Annual reports and minutes but many were recorded contemporaneously from the 1890s. The Chronology serves as a means of verifying events through other sources such as minute books, annual reports and so on. The xray demonstration was given after the opening of the Mining at Metallurgical Laboratory at the Ballarat School of Mines. "Arrangements for the conversazione in Connection with the opening of the new metallurgical and mining laboratory at the School of Mines are in a forward state, and the inaugural ceremony pro mises to be a most auspicious one. Mr William Fox, of Melbourne, has accepted an invitation to be present, and he will give an X Ray demonstration. Dr Fox's achievements in this direction are well known, and the apparatus he is possessed of is very complete. During the evening Mr W. C. Little and Mr Bishop will give selections on the Pianola, and besides this there will be a first-class graphophone in operation." This is a 1985 invitation to the 50th anniversary of the re-establishment in 1935 of the Warrnambool Pipes and Drums group. The event was called a ‘ceilidh’, a celebration featuring Scottish songs, music, dance and other entertainment. The Warrnambool Pipes and Drums Inc.was originally formed as the Warrnambool Pipe Band in 1906 with the object of popularising Scottish music and in particular bagpipe music. Simon Fraser was the first Pipe Major (1906-1910) and the group featured in early events in the town, including the annual Highland Gatherings and street marches and celebrations. The group was in recess from 1916 to 1935 when it was re-formed. It has been in existence since then except for a short recess during World War Two. This card is of interest as a souvenir of a 1985 invitation to the 50th anniversary celebration of the re-formation of the Warrnambool Pipes and Drums organization in 1935. This group is important in the musical life of Warrnambool today. This is a white card with a blue border, blue printing and a logo featuring a belt, a tree and the motto, ‘Stand Sure’. Correspondence dated 24 February 1970 - 6 March 1970 concerning an invitation to a Dinner Dance at Government House on 7th April 1970 in honour of The Prince of Wales and The Princess Anne, hosted by Miss Frances Anne Delacombe. The Governor, via his Private Secretary Lt.Col W.H.A. Becke, asked Melbourne Legacy to nominate two male and two female members between the ages of 18 and 25 who had achieved something in the scholastic, sporting or community service fields. Invitation to services commemorating the 80th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone of Christ Church, at 14 Acland Street St Kilda, on 25 November 1934. Christ Church was constructed in 1854-57 and designed in Decorated Gothic style by Albert Purchase & Charles Swyer. It was enlarged in 1874 and 1881 to the designs of Sydney W Smith. It is one of four main buildings constructed on land granted to the Church of England in 1855 and named Church Square. The other buildings are the bishop's residence, vicarage and parish hall. Heritage Victoria describes it as a 'rare and significant square in the history of town planning in Victoria which demonstrates the importance of the church to the community'. Invitation to the official opening of refuse destructor units and asphalt mixing plants at Inkerman Street, St Kilda, on 18 March 1953. The destructor units replaced a garbage incinerator that had been operating at the site for thirty years and had become obsolete. They were expected to serve St. Kilda's requirements for the next 80-100 years. In 1994, as a result of the local government amalgamation process combining the former Cities of Port Melbourne, South Melbourne and St Kilda, the new City of Port Phillip owned three municipal depots. The St Kilda municipal depot site became surplus to requirements and, in 1996, the City of Port Phillip resolved to use the site for a community housing project under the City of Port Phillip Housing Program. Handwritten notes from Southern Cross newspaper, 08/05/1909 and 10/04/1909 about meetings to establish the club, into lists of office-bearers. Three photocopies of a group photo of members of the E.D.B.C., undated but probably 1910-14. No caption but verse of one copy states Early Days E.D.B.C. Photocopy of one page from 500 Victorians, Centenary Edition, 1934, on Arthur Apps, J.P. “Mortician” with cartoon portrait, noting that he is now associated with the Elsternwick District Bowling Club.
