Robin Boyd met architect Neil Clerehan at the end of 1943 when they were both in the army. Burns studied at Melbourne Technical College and University of Melbourne. An architect and painter he exhibited with the Contemporary Art Society where he was to become secretary and vice president.

The first Kew Congregational Church in Walpole Street, was designed by Charles Vickers, and opened in 1860. Built for William and Anna-Maria Greenlaw in the early 1880s, and with interiors decorated by the Paterson Bros, Villa Alba remained in private ownership until 1949. From 1950, the house was owned by a number of institutions. By 1984, the Villa Alba Preservation Society had been formed, and three years later, the Mount Royal Hospital granted a 25-year lease to Kew Council. In 2004, the title to Villa Alba was passed by the Victorian Government to The Villa Alba Museum Incorporated. The Museum, at 44 Walmer Street, Kew, is now a cultural institution committed to the collection, study and display of 19th century interior decorative finishes, and the components of 19th and 20th century interior decoration.This is one of a number of historically and aesthetically significant photos of the interiors and exterior of Villa Alba when it was still owned by the Mount Royal Hospital, showing twentieth century accretions and deterioration of the historic fabric of the building. The Siddeley Street institute, designed by renown architect Walter Butler was built in 1907. The foundation stone was laid in February 1907 by Lord Northcote and the institute was opened in December the same year.The Siddeley Street Seamen's Institute is the first central structure to be built in central Melbourne on the banks of the Yarra River as the shipping was moving from Hobson's Bay to the city centre. Robin Boyd wrote two books on Japanese architects and architecture - “Kenzo Tange” published by George Braziller in 1962 and “New Directions in Japanese Architecture” published by Studio Vista in 1968. During the 1960s he travelled several times to Japan to research these books and as part of his role as Exhibits Architect for the Australian Pavilion at Expo ‘70 in Osaka. Danish architect Jørn Utzon who had won the competition arrived in Australia with a bronze plaque that can still be seen on the steps today and was placed at the point where the axes of the two halls intersect. Due to problems with the site and construction Utzon resigned and Australian architect Peter Hall took over. The Opera House was completed on 20 October 1973 and has seen many remarkable operatic and musical performances. Currently in 2017 it is undergoing renovations.
