Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village
Photograph - Glass plate, circa 1866
This glass plate photograph shows good detail of members of the Warrnambool Garrison posing for their photograph in front of a young township. There are other well-dressed citizens behind them. The three men with frogging on their sleeves were commanders were likely to be commanders. The men are facing north with Cannon Hill and the fortification area in the background. It dates from the 1860s. The firearms held appear to be 1853 pattern Lee Enfield muskets used by the British army in Crimea at this time and in Australia, rather than the later Martini Henry cartridge rifles. The uniforms match other photos of the Warrnambool Garrison Militia and Band in our Collection, taken up until the 1880s. The three storey building in the photograph is likely to be the Manifold & Bostock flour mill, built in 1854 near the ‘cutting’ in Merri Street, which was one of the main streets at the time; if one faced the building’s front from a vantage point and looked south to south-east, the hills around Flagstaff Hill and Cannon Hill would be behind that mill, and the Harbour behind the hills. This is the area of the Fortifications. The glass plate method of photography was widely used during the mid-19th to early-20th century. The donor and maker of the photograph are unknown. Around this time the citizens of Victoria were prospering from the gold rush but felt isolated and uneasy about their security in the colony. In 1854 the Volunteer Act was passed to provide some military defence. In 1858 the Warrnambool Volunteer Rifle Corps was established, disbanded in 1863, then a new Warrnambool Detachment was formed in September 1866. Legislation was passed in 1884 that replaced the volunteers’ corps with a partly paid, permanent Militia Defence Force. The batteries manning the coastal forts of Victoria were termed Garrison Artillery Companies. When the Army was federated in 1901 there were eight Militia Companies in Victoria. Warrnambool and Port Fairy together were known as 8 Coy AGA (Australian Garrison Artillery). Changes to formation and name continued into the 20th century. This photograph is a record of the very early local defence force, circa 1866. The photograph signifies the connection of the colony in Victoria to the growing need for security due to the unrest in Europe at that time. The photograph is also locally significant to the industry of the young township of Warrnambool, showing what is likely to be one of the first flour mills in the town. The photograph is also the only example of the early methods of glass plate photography in our collection. Photograph, rectangular glass plate, positive sepia image. Photograph has brass framed edges that fold over to the back, with mitred corners. The front edges are pressed with a decorative floral pattern. The photograph shows a group of thirty military men, standing or kneeling, in dark uniforms with pillbox forage caps, round-collared jackets with light buttons, light sashes worn from top left shoulder to bottom right side of waist belt, and long, straight-legged trousers. Three of these men have light braid around the buttons on the front of their jackets, light frogging on their sleeve cuffs and stripes on the outside seams of their trousers. The other twenty-seven men have plain uniforms and are holding firearms in their right hands, steadied with their left hands. Other figures are standing behind this group of soldiers, including three or four men wearing top hats, jackets and ties. In the background is a row of buildings. The central building is three stories high. Bare hills are in the far background. The foreground is uneven ground with patches of short grass. He was in great demand as a judge of both cattle and horses at agricultural shows in Victoria and interstate. He was a shire councillor for 30 years and president several times. He took a great interest in the sporting clubs of the town and played cricket until late in life. He was goal umpire for the local football team for many years, judged for the Orbost Racing Club and was the first president of the Orbost Bowls Club. He was also a member of the first municipal band. Sam Lynn was a well-known Orbost pioneer. Photograph, Group from Brunswick ANA Lodge at Eltham, Nov. 1933
One of three photos. Group of people including children associated with the Australian Natives Association at an outing at Eltham Lower Park. The first image was reproduced in EDHS Newsletter No. 163 July 2005 following a query from Nillumbik Historical society (Gwen Myers) seeking information about the location of the photo. It was suggested that it may be Eltham Lower Park, however the house in the background did not appear correct. There were simliar but mirror imaged. A more recent review of these photographs (2023) suggests that the photos were actually taken in Bremners flats (present-day Wingrove Park) looking towards the house near the intersection of Main and Mount Pleasant roads - Mrs Bremner's house. The topograpghy is also more in fitting with this location than that of Eltham Lower Park. A review of a 1945 aerial photo shows only one house of similar style present in this location. Further reviews of photos taken in the 1950s by Grace Mitchell looking back towards Bremner Flats shows two trees close by on a lean similar to that in the photos.Inkjet-printed copy of sepia photographaustralian natives association, bremners flats, recruitment, wingrove park -

Photograph, Legacy Somers Camp, c1930
Four black and white photos of Somers camp, in 1931. One show a corrugated iron building that had been built and what looks like a prank being played on a Legatee in suit and cap. Also one of junior legatee Graham Billett by some camp buildings. Another shows Gwen Smith. Plus a group of youths on the beach. All are from the same film. In the early years, Legacy organised outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring close to the beach. Permanent camp buildings were built in 1930. In 1930 Lord Somers (Governor of Victoria) also started a camp at a nearby property and the area was renamed Somers. Legacy Somers Camps continued intermittently at Stan's property until it was decided in 1951 to make other arrangements for holidays. Work on paper - Award Card
This local flower show award from 1905 together with others in the collection demonstrates the significance of such shows as a form of social activity as well as horticultural science over the decades. It is also an example of church groups being involved in the social fabric of the community and activities that embraced all segments of the community of different religious persuasions as the certificate was awarded to Michael Taffe, a Roman Catholic in a Church of England enclave. The Girls' Friendly Society founded in England in 1875 was an Anglican Church group which formed to give maids and female domestic staff spiritual guidance and social activities for their days off. The first local Australian branch was formed in Adelaide in 1879 with branches being established in Ballarat from the 1880s. Other certificates from 1899 to the 1930s in this collection of Taffe awards come from a range of faiths and community groups. This award is one of a family collection from the nineteenth century through to the twenty-first century further demonstrating horticultural enthusiasts exhibition participation across generations. This certificate evidences one of the activities of the Girls Friendly Society St Paul's Branch in a community event that embraced the local community. The Girls Friendly Society commenced in Ballarat in the 1880s and this certificate evidences one way in which the movement not only raised funds but actively involved itself in the local community regardless of creed.Inscribed 'Stock Double Mr M J Taffe'.girls friendly society, st paul's, flower show, 1905,, ballarat -

Photograph - W2 class 567 Transporting art tram - Peter Corrigan
Photograph shows W2 class tram 567 in Art Tram livery possibly at the Simpson St sidings. Large wording on one side reads "Mother Knows" with a Japanese naval ensign or flag painted between the words, possibly cover a third word. The artist was Peter Corrigan, the work using the Japanese flag created controversy at the time. The second and third photos show the flag covered over. The tram was subsequently repainted during 1978. From the Museum's webpage on Transporting Art: "Peter Corrigan’s cheeky No. 567 created an international incident – the Japanese Embassy lodged a diplomatic protest over his use of their naval ensign with the enigmatic slogan ‘Mother Knows’. The tram was hurriedly withdrawn, and the offending flags were quickly overpainted before No. 567 re-entered traffic. By report, Corrigan was less than impressed by this act of official censorship. Even in its adulterated form, No. 567 did not last, as it was overpainted in 1982". The photograph shows a ship visit. It is historically significant and thought to be one of a series of photographs linked to a publicity campaign circa 1955-1956 promoting the work of the Mission. The campaign partly inspired by the Centenary year of the Mission in Australia (1956) also resulted in the production of a black and white short film "The Flying Angel", featuring and Padre Oliver and the work of the Mission was deposited in 2016 with the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, (ACMI) Federation Square, Melbourne.Padre Frank Oliver, Chaplain to the Mission to Seafarers 1930 - 1960 led the Mission through a period of significant changes through the mid 20th C. This photo shows the first Delley's Bridge, built to cross the Fyans Creek to provide access to Halls Gap and beyond in the 1880's. The bridge was swept away a number of times in floods. This bridge was replaced by a higher timber structure but constant erosion of the creek bank eventually led to its replacement by a timber and concrete structure. After nearly 50 years of its use, wear and tear necessitated a fourth bridge to be erected in 2001.A log bridge across a creek with a man standing on the bridge. Photo Framed - Wedding
This wedding photo is of local pioneer families, Cooper and Larkins. John Cooper Jnr. married Annie Emma Larkins. The exact date is unknown. This is not only important for the Cooper & Larkin families but for historical reference for the Tawonga area where these families lived. It shows that even though the Kiewa Valley was considered remote during this period the tradition of a big formal wedding was still held with fashionable weddings. This photo was included in a group of photos. This photo has historical significance as it depicts members of local pioneer families getting married. It also is representative of the style of wedding dresses of the period and the style of men's wedding attire. The photograph itself is also significant as is demonstrates the style and formality of wedding photos during this time. The picture frame is likewise the style of the period. However, this is in bad condition with bore holes in it. This photo has good interpretive value and is well provenanced. Black and white wedding photo of John Cooper Jnr. and Annie Emma Larkins. This poster is representative of the tourism marketing that was used in the 1990's to promote the aesthetic beauty of the township of Mt Beauty thus the play on the words, Mt Beauty, The Name Says It All. The poster also promotes activities that are on offer to the visitor in Mt Beauty and the broader area. The poster is also significant as it shows the progression in marketing by the Alpine Shire and the Mt Beauty Chamber of Commerce from the early days of marketing Mt Beauty as a tourist destination. This poster is historically significant as it shows the style of tourism campaigns of the 1990's with the slogan "Mt Beauty The Name Says It All", which is a play on the name Mt Beauty and was promoted by the Mt Beauty Chamber of Commerce and the Alpine Shire. This slogan is no longer part of the tourism for the Alpine Shire and therefore is a good comparative example of previous tourism and current tourism campaigns. Also see "KVHS 0204" for another example of tourism brochure. Coloured poster of local scenes and activities promoting tourism in North East Victoriaposter. mt beauty. tourism. -

Photograph - Photograph (Black & White), Ballarat School of Mines Students, 1895, c1900
The Ballarat School of Mines was established in the disused Ballarat Circuit Court in 1870 through the initiatives of the Ballarat Mining Board, which was concerned with the shortage of trained men for the goldfields. The former Ballarat Circuit Court House was originally abandoned due to subsidence of its foundations, possible caused by under-mining. This photograph shows students in front of that building, which was demolished c1912 to make way for the Ballarat Technical Art School building. A group of men pose for a photograph at the side of the original Ballarat School of Mines Building (Former Circuit Court - now demolished). Many wear hats.ballarat school of mines, ballarat circuit court house, court house, ballarat mining board, students, class, former ballarat circuit courthouse, alumni, boater hats
