Donald Victor BLACK, gardener, served and died as a result of WW11 service, an oak tree in the Ballarat Botanical Gardens is dedicated to him, 19th March 1944. Donald V. Black was highly regarded as a gardener in the Ballarat Botanical Gardens before he saw action in the Middle East and New Guinea during World War 2. Sergeant Keith McDowell gave a cone he collected from Gallipoli to his aunt to try and grow. One seed was planted in the Warrnambool Botanic Gardens and another at the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne. These pine trees have symbolic importance as a representation of Australian soldiers' "tenacity and fortitude". This booklet tells the story of the bell from the "S. S. Santhia" and how it came to Bogong State School, Victoria. "Santhia" belonged to the British India Line. On 6th November 1943 she was in service as a troopship when she caught fire and capsized at No. 3 Garden Reach Jetty, Calcutta. Due to the additional weight of water pumped into her to extinguish the fire, "Santhia" heeled over and remained in the mud of the River Hooghly until a successful salvage was completed in January 1946. The salvage operation was carried out by Captain J. P. Williams of Melbourne and his team of Australian divers nine and a half months after the commencement of operations. "Santhia" was the sixty seventh ship salvaged by Captain Williams. "Santhia's" Bell was presented by Captain Williams to Mr G.G. Jobbins, Chairman of Commissioners for installation at Bogong State School. The ceremony of presenting the bell took place on 21st February 1947. The bell bears the following inscription:- "Presented to G.G.Jobbins, Esq., Chairman, State Electricity Commission, by Captain J.P. Williams for Bogong School, on December 6th, 1946. This bell was recovered from the wreck of the "S.S.Santhia" sunk in the Hooghly River, Calcutta, and raised by an Australian salvage party."This booklet is significant because it documents an unusual event linking Bogong State School to a World War II salvage operation.A booklet consisting of images and text which tells the story of S.S. The Ararat Citizens' Band is a very well known band and is still in existence as the Ararat City Band. The Ararat Band have been regular competitors in Victorian Bands' League events over the past century.This photograph is significant as it shows the discipline of a brass band while participating in a marching contest. The Quickstep and Street March contests at Ballarat were highlights of brass band competitions and always drew large crowds. Harcourt Methodist Church was instrumental in forming the Harcourt Carpet Bowls Association with many members common to both organisations. This commenced about 1948 and is still in existence in 2017. The bowls were used at some church social evenings in addition to being used in the Harcourt Carpet Bowls competition. Mr. William A. Charles Frederick Clark was 1 of 3 sons of Thomas and Elizabeth Clark of Bonegilla who served in WW1. Charles, Ernest and Thomas were the eldest children of a family of 12 children. At the age of 25, Charles enlisted in 13th Light Horse Brigade 1st Reinforcement on 25 January 1915. He was later transferred to the 2nd Division Artillery Column and the 4th Australian Medium Trench Mortar Battery. Charles served in Egypt, Gallipoli and France. As a result of his actions at the Third Battle of Morlancourt on the Western Front, Charles was awarded the Military Medal. The citation for the medal read:- Awarded: Military Medal 24th June 1918 Recommended by: Brigadier-General O. F. Phillips Commanding 2nd Division Artillery Column Action for which commended: 637 Bombardier Charles Frederick Clark 868 Bombardier (T/Corporal) George Traill McLennan "On the night 10/11th June 1918 during the attack South of MORLANCOURT near ALBERT, these NCOs showed great courage and determination under most trying conditions.
