Arriving to play at Geelong in a blaze of publicity at the age of 27, his participation in the 1962 intra-club practice matches attracted unprecedented spectator interest. Despite suffering a severe knee injury in the opening minutes of his first League match, he immediately demonstrated his wide range of skills. He is regarded as the greatest handpassing exponent in the history of football and was one of the first players to use it as a method of attack. Frequently he achieved distances of 30 to 40 metres with hand passes to team-mates in better position. His ruck work was also quite revolutionary. He developed the technique of leaping for the ball slightly earlier than his opponents and gaining a 'ride' higher into the air. Often he would, in preference to a conventional tap-out, roll the ball down one arm and handpass to a team-mate running past He developed this technique with Bill Goggin in particular. The Warrnambool Fire Brigade was formed in 1863 with the first fire engine house in Liebig Street. Since then the brigade has been situated in Raglan Parade, Timor Street and today is in Mortlake Road. Fire Brigade demonstrations were a feature of rural Fire Brigades, particularly in the 19th century. At these demonstrations firemen from all over the state were involved in competition using hose reels, pumps and ladders etc. A torch light procession was always part of the demonstration. The state Fire Brigade Demonstration was held in Warrnambool in March 1929. One hundred and nineteen teams entered the Champion Fours and there were ninety one entrants in the one man ladder competition which was won by a fireman from Carrum who was carried shoulder high around the oval. This badge has considerable significance as it is our only memento of the Fire Brigade demonstration held in Warrnambool in 1929. A gold coloured metal badge featuring a profile of a fireman's helmet at the top, a horizontal bar, ornate capital Letters; C F B painted ( the letter F is missing some paint ) in the centre and a dark blue scroll with text at the base. No. 1 Pipeline heads down the mountain from McKay Power Station (the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme) and can be seen from the Falls Creek Rd.. The pipeline is 1635m long. It was built on the mountain rather than as a tunnel inside the mountain - "It was argued that a pressure pipeline on the surface, while not actually cheaper than the tunnel could possibly save one year in construction time.'The document is a report on the welding involved on the No. 1 pipeline. J. M. Scott was the welding inspector for the SECV on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. The Marist Brothers arrived in Bendigo in 1893 and began classes for boys in makeshift classrooms at St Killians. By the next year they had moved to a permanent school in McCrae Street. This promotional photograph by the Tobacco Growers Association was in response to a 1935 meeting of tobacco growers from Victoria, South Australia and Queensland which produced four major resolutions for the industry covering the remainder of the 1900s. These four resolutions were: (1) Adequate tariff protection (2) Control of pests and diseases (3) Orderly marketing (4) The formation of an advisory council of growers. History has produced the following results. (1) adequate tariff protection was never achieved,(2) control of disease through benzol vapour (CSIRO) breakthrough, was later identified as carcinogenic, (3) orderly marketing was achieved through (4) the establishment of the Tobacco Growers Association(1984). In October 2006, by way of Government buy back of tobacco leases from growers, resulted in the end of Tobacco farming in Australia (after 136 years of planting the first crop). It was also significant that the major tobacco companies such as Philip Morris and The British American Tobacco Australasia advised the industry that it would source its tobacco requirements overseas by 2009.The remnants of the Tobacco Industry can still be viewed throughout the Kiewa Valley and adjacent regions on the former tobacco farms which still have the tobacco drying sheds and now converted into hay sheds. The problems from the large quantities of carcinogenic infused soil of farmlands in the region, still remains a problem now and for future generations. This particular photograph shows the lack of understanding by farmers and the contracted labour, at that time, and is demonstrated by the bare footed farmer walking next to the seed canister. Some workers did use protective "gum" boots but the majority of farm owners were skeptical of city scientists and their carcinogenic concerns, and it was only after the younger generation of farmers , who had attended Agricultural colleges, encompassed the scientific approach to farm management and began working closely with agricultural scientists. The "she'll be right mate" attitude of the earlier farming/rural community has since mid 1970s, been slowly dissipating. Stricter controls of herbicides and pesticides used in agriculture are now in force. The death of the tobacco industry(2006) resulted in the expansion of the dairy , sheep, beef cattle, venison and lama wool producers in the Kiewa Valley and surrounding regions.Coloured photograph pasted onto a thick wood chip backing.
