This is No.1 the first Newsletter produced by CMHS members in August 1961. Topics : October 1960 Mayor Cr. D.H. Clark called a meeting in the Moorabbin Town Hall to form the City of Moorabbin Historical Society. Local residents attended including descendants of early settler families - Coates, LePage, Shipston - and a Committee was elected. Mr T.A.Sheehy, President, Mr R.Colbourne, Secretary, Mrs F.Wright, Treasurer set the Annual Membership Fee at 5/- ( shillings), arranged the next meetings at the Moorabbin Town Hall and began to compile a Newsletter to tell the ' story of Moorabbin'. The Cheltenham & District Society Co-operative Limited (est.1896) sponsored this 1st CMHS Newsletter published August 1961. The Aims of the CMHS are ‘to record the history of the City, and register something of the Australian Atmosphere, which the necessary speed-up in post-world-war two (WW11) immigration has caused to be lost; to produce a magazine at regular intervals, featuring the work of pioneers and the changing Australian scene; to work constantly with a long range view towards building a hall where records and exhibits can be housed’ The Original Newsletters reflect the history and heritage of the former City of Moorabbin — derived from Mooroobin, ‘a resting place’ in the Bunurrung spoken language. In 1994, the City of Moorabbin was integrated into the Cities of Bayside, Glen Eira, Kingston and Monash. This is the 1st Newsletter of CMHS in August 1961 CMHS obtained a Kingston City Council Community Grant 2016 for the digitization and preservation of these Original CMHS Newsletters commenced in 1961 Foolscap paper printed on 1 side.CITY OF MOORABBIN HISTORICAL / SOCIETY / NEWSLETTER No 1 / AUGUST 1961moorabbin, cheltenham, bentleigh, newsletters,, sheehy thomas, coates l.r, shipston h, lepage e.a, lepage f.w., blackburn nance, clark d.h., wright f, moorabbin city council, cheltenham and district society co-operative limited, moorabbin town hall, early settlers, market gardeners, pioneers, dendy henry, brighton, box william, bent thomas -

Functional object - Wodonga Turf Club Member's Badge, Perfection Badges, 1986
The first race meetings took place in Wodonga as early as 1859, when there was an annual three-day race meeting known as the Belvoir annual races. More regular racing in Wodonga dates back to 1870. The first formal race club, the Wodonga Racing Club, was founded in 1873. In 1901 it was renamed as the Wodonga Federal Racing Club. In May 1901, the Wodonga Amateur Turf Club was formed. Also in 1901, on 3rd July, another body, the Wodonga Citizens’ Race Club was formed with a view to satisfying a demand for winter racing. At a meeting at the Wodonga Council Chambers in October 1901, it was decided, seemingly by an unanimous vote, that the three Wodonga race clubs then in existence would amalgamate to form the Wodonga Turf Club. Mission to Seafarers Victoria
Badge, The Missions to Seamen: Honorary Worker, circa 1960s
The lapel badge was worn to signify membership of the Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild. This badge was issued to honorary workers. In the earliest days this status indicated the member as a 1 guinea subscriber to The Harbour Light Guild. "Worker" members subscribed just a shilling but were required to contribute time at the Mission with hosting and facility maintenance. The form of logo indicates this badge as possibly dating back to the 1930s. Donated by Rosalea GreenwoodThe Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild was instrumental in securing funds to construct the current building at 717 Flinders Street. They were also dedicated volunteers who organised many social functions and events to offer visiting seafarers an opportunity to relax, have fun and socialise away from the ship. The LHLG which became known as the harbour Lights Guild after WW2 amalgamated with the Flying Angels in the 1960s, therefore these badges are primarily of historical interest. Small round lapel badge denoting Ladies Harbour Lights Guild and its association with Mission to Seamen (Mission to Seafarers). The badge incorporates the logo flag of Mission to Seamen. Photograph - Harbour Bridge over Watchbed Creek
The late W.F. “Bill” Waters, Rover Commissioner of Victoria, was introduced to skiing in November 1930 at the International Scout Chalet at Kandersteg in Switzerland. He believed it would be a good activity for Victorian Rovers to be involved in to learn more about the Victorian Alps The first Rover ski trip to the Bogong High Plains was in the August of 1932 when a group of four crossed the High Plains from Omeo to Harrietville via Tawonga Huts, Cobungra Gap, Mt Loch and Mt Feathertop. In 1933 the Bogong Rover Crew was formed and in 1938 funds were collected and life memberships offered to raise funds to build a Rover Chalet for the purposes of skiing. During February and March1940, the Chalet was built at a cost of £700 using volunteer labour. It was the first ski lodge in the area and was built long before there was a road over Watchbed Creek. After the road to Rocky Valley was finished it was easier for the scouts to walk in from there instead of from Shannonvale. During the spring thaw the creek became almost impassable. Joe Holsten who was an SEC employee who worked with Martin Romuld out of Wilkinson’s Hut built a bridge across the creek made entirely from snow gums which he had to haul about 300 metres from the nearby hills. It became known as the Harbour Bridge as it arched over the water just like the Sydney Harbour Bridge. These images are significant because they depict an early bridge structure to enable easier travelling across the Bogong High Plains.Three black and white photos taken at the Harbour Bridge, Watchbed Creek.harbour bridge bogong high plains, watchbed creek, joe holsten -

Photograph - Falls Creek Ski Patrol
The first ski patroller in Falls Creek was Brian Caddy with two casual ski patrollers Rob Sarroff and David Crooke in the 1960s. In 1972 the “official” Falls Creek Ski Patrol was created under the advisement of Dr Rodney Moss with the support of the Management Committee. By 1977 there were six or seven patrollers, and currently there are around 40 patrollers on the team with 13-14 rostered on each day during peak season. In 1974 the Australian Ski Patrol Association (ASPA) was formed. On the 14th March 1975, the Falls Creek Tourist Area Management Committee applied for membership to ASPA. At that time, Falls Creek Ski Patrol was known as Falls Creek Ski Rescue. From that time, Falls Creek patrollers began wearing the recommended uniform of a white cross on a red parka. This photo is significant because it depicts members of Falls Creek Ski Patrol, a vital service in the Falls Creek Tourist Area.A framed coloured photo of a group of Ski Patrollers in front of the Medical Centre, Falls Creek.Below image: Falls Creek Ski Patrol 1977falls creek ski patrol, falls creek, services falls creek -
