August Rietmann (1877-1951) of Lustdorf ,Switzerland, married Maria Frieda Oesschlager (1878-1942) of Baden Baden, in Germany on 6/8/1910 I8/8/1915 August and his wife Frieda migrated to Melbourne, Victoria, Australia sailing on the Steam Ship ‘Osterley’ from Marseilles to Melbourne They leased Box Cottage, Ormond in 1917 and raised two children, Stefanie (1918 -2006) and William (1920- 1997). 1935 August purchased the property and the family used the Cottage during the day and slept in the Front House. August was a monumental mason, potter and sculptor, and was employed at Corbens Ltd Clifton Hill, to carve war memorials in Victoria post WW1 c 1915-1922. During the 1920's August set up his own business in pressed cement making pot plants, columns,paving slabs and lamp-stands. 1930s he continued to carve headstones and figures and took contract work for Artists eg Paul Montford. He built a workshop in the Barn and used the Cottage for plaster moulding. His son William joined the business and and the family continued to use the site after August died in 1951. Rietmann Landscaping Ltd moved to Bay Road Highett in 1953 and later to Carrum. The land, containing the Box Cottage, was sold to Lewis Timber Pty Ltd in 1970 and Mr Lewis proposed that Moorabbin City Council should preserve the heritage Cottage. Manufactured by Middy's: Arriving in Australia at age 19 by ship at Port Melbourne, Dutch immigrant Petrus Cornelis Nicolaas Middendorp (1891-1963) settled in Melbourne to apply his trade as a cigar maker for the British American Tobacco Co. Retiring from the cigar industry and following his work as an honorary orderly tending WW1 Australian casualties in Paris and Melbourne, Petrus began selling Dutch manufactured light globes, vacuum cleaners and other electrical products imported from Holland and England. Warehousing and sales of the goods were undertaken from 1928 by the ‘Middendorp Goods Supply Company’ initially located in Flinders Lane in Melbourne’s CBD, then moving to McKillop Street, followed by a basement store at 148 Queen Street. During the 1940s a manufacturing plant known as ‘Middendorp and Sons’ was established in the Melbourne suburb of Preston, where Petrus’ three teenage sons Peter, Nick and Hugh joined him. Peter and Hugh worked with a small team of staff to produce rubber plug tops, extension sockets, double adaptors and a small range of bakelite accessories, whilst Nick became the first sales rep calling on customers and construction sites. The products were sold under the brand name of ‘Middy’. A name change of the distribution business took place in the late 40s and Middendorp Electric Company Pty Ltd was officially registered in 1948. The manufacturing operation ceased during the late 50s due to the introduction and acceptance of plastic and injection moulding. 'Calcium Borogluconate ia a stable , non-irritant calcium preparation for subcutaneous or intravenous injection in the treatment of milk fever and other forms of acute hypocalcaemia. It is available in the dry state as 'Wellcome' Calcium Borogluconate, a granular product in single dose containers of 2 1/2 oz. Milk Fever In the treatment of milk fever in cows, 21/2 oz. to 31/2 oz. of the granules should be injected subcutaneously at two or three points in the neck, with the usual aseptic precautions. The granules should be dissolved in 10 fl. oz. of boiling water, the solution allowed to boil for five minutes, then cooled to body temperature before administration. Repetition of the dose is very rarely necessary. Should a more rapid response be desired, the whole of the solution hay be given by slow intravenous injection; alternatively , the greater part of the solution may be injected by this route and the remainder given subcutaneously in the manner described above. A convenient apparatus for the controlled administration of large volumes of fluid (leaflet side two) is the 'Wellcome' Flutter Valve Injection Apparatus. Prophylaxis Recurrent attacks at successive parturitions may be prevented by giving calcium borogluconate immediately after calving and again about 20 hours later. Each dose should be from one or two ounces of 'Wellcome' Calcium Borogluconate, dissolved as directed above. Other Indications Certain other conditions have been found to respond readily to calcium borogluconate therapy. These include parturient hypocalcaemia or milk fever in ewes, parturient eclampsia in sows and bitches, so-called "staggers" in lactating dairy cattle suspected to be due to hypocalcaemia, and transit tetany in horses. The dosage for various species is generally within the ranges indicated below : horses and cattle 11/2 to 31/2 oz. Sheep, goats and pigs 1/2 oz. to 1 oz. Dogs 11/2 dr. to 3 dr. Mary Howlett (1840-1922) began practising as a country midwife in 1866 in the western district of Victoria. She qualified as a 'ladies monthly nurse' in 1887 and continued to practise as a nurse and midwife until 1920.She began her six months training at the Melbourne Lying-In Hospital. She was known by many as 'Auntie', and her career spanned more than 50 years. Mrs Howlett's midwifery box and contents were given to Dr Frank Forster, and he donated them to the museum collection in 1993. The contents of this box are consistent with use by a midwife, but such a box would have been cumbersome and heavy to carry around. It is possible that Mary Howlett would also have had a bag for her midwifery requirements.This midwifery box is highly significant as it includes close to the original contents of one midwife's 'professional kit' up to 1920. The contents reveal something of the professional practice of a midwife in country Victoria at that time.A wooden box with hinged lift-up lid, one drawer, and an inner wooden tray. Rests at each side inside box indicate another tray may have originally sat across the top. Pasted inside the lid is a product list from Robert McDonald (chemist and druggist). There are locks for both the main chest section and the drawer. A circular section is cut out of the bottom of the drawer. The contents of the box include, enema syringe, a red rubber douche, glass breast pump, nipple shields, a thermometer in travel case. Also includes cotton bandages, a tooth extractor, and fetal stethoscope.midwifery

Shields are made of a fine, silicone material that sits over the areola and nipple. The Inhiband intrauterine device is a variety of the Grafenberg Ring. The Grafenberg ring was developed by Dr Ernst Grafenberg in the late 1920s. This coincided with the beginnings of the modern birth control movement. Grafenberg and Herbert Hall migrated to the USA during the Hitler era and brought with them the knowledge of the intrauterine ring. Herbert Hall developed a stainless steel version of the Grafenberg ring in 1949 and used it with select private patients in New York. A report on his results was published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1962. The Inhiband product bears his name in brackets. The dispensing box and five remaining containers with Inhiband IUDs inside were from the Albert Street East Melbourne rooms of Dr Geoffrey Bishop.
