Quotes MMTB Chairman Mr Bell, Premier Mr. Dunstan. Notes problems with the extra war time traffic, not coping with maintenance issues, problems with double deck passengers, passengers not wanting to use upstairs, trams superior for the short haul, Fisherman's Bend services, number of buses and that the Board is building new trams, the SW6. Notes service schedules to Northcote, could operate Bourke St with 55 trams instead of 74 buses. Notes the work to consider replacement done by Mr. Simpson, the Acting Manager. Series of 15 black and white photographs of the track works to reconstruct tram lines showing various methods and works during the 1960's. .1 - Jackhammers concrete out around wooden sleepers - the rails have been bolted to them. .2 - Excavated track or temporary track next to newly relaid track - Hawthorn Road by Caulfield Park? .3 - Partly completed work - nearest track relaid, second track still has wood blocks? and then a temporary track. .4 - Excavated previously concreted and bolted track. Appears to be new rail. .5 - Compacting a new track bed with work laying track in the background. .6 - Rail being craned into position onto small concrete blocks - Nicholson St North Fitzroy at Church St - the church is now Melbourne City Mission Palliative care centre. 1955/56 - construction of the replacement track. Note the Hail bus stop sign on the corner. .7 - Thermite welding being set up. .8 - after a Thermite welding joint completed. .9 - track reading for pouting concrete, with a rebuilt track alongside and temporary track on the other side. .10 - ditto .11 - Concrete being poured .12 - ditto - could be Maribyrnong Road bridge replacement. .13 - Screeding off the concrete - possibly Nicholson St North Fitzroy .14 - completed surface - location as above .15 - completed surface with cloth covers to assist the concrete being cured. Folds to 167H x 95W 2 - Book - 48 pages + light card cover, "The Explorers Guide to Melbourne" - has a table of contents and index - details of Melbourne, what to see etc. 165H x 96W .3 - ticket - white card, punched for Nov 6, number EP6362 - has conditions of travel on the rear. 60H x 91W Available for zone 1 only .4 - 3 fold DL, advertising the Explorers Pass - three separate tickets, enabled the purchaser to pick the days. $12. .5 - single DL card as for .4, price $13, dated 1/1/1993. Map of the system shown at two inches = 1 mile. Drawing No. P5799. Shows crossovers, track layouts at junctions, signal cabins roads, railways, and stations. Originally signed by Perway Engineer - 20/12/1940, though originally drawn in 1922. The plan shows the lines to Maribyrnong Munitions works along Cordite Ave and Wests Road and the track from Moonee Ponds to Union Road, opened in July 1941, and the extension to Essendon Airport built in 1942, but not the Queen St North Essendon substation. A3, Has the revised The Met symbol with a key along the lower edge detailing route numbers and routes. .2 - Southern Region Tram Map with a map key showing hospitals, points of interest, parks and gardens, some schools and zones. A similar letter would have been prepared for the Upfield line. .2 - letter dated 6/1/1993 titled "Metropolitan Rail System - Service Alterations and closures" announcing that the Minister for Public Transport, announced the closure of the Newport to Williamstown lines and the Upfield rail line, along with reduction of services on other lines and that a voluntary departure package (termination of employment) is available. Has a detailed list of lines affected and bus replacement on rear. A souvenir from one of the last trams to Port Melbourne. Both the South Melbourne and Port Melbourne cable lines closed on this date. The South Melbourne line was converted to electric traction; the Port Melbourne line was replaced by a bus service. See item 7595 for another bell cord from the same event.Has a close association with the closure of the Port Melbourne cable tram line.Bell cord - for a grip car bell - consisting of a wooden turned handle fitted with a screw at the bottom, a length of sash cord and a cast iron end to which the rope has been glued or fastened into and a hook that went on the underside of the bell itself.
