Kew was gazetted as a Municipality in 1860, as a Borough in 1863, as a Town in 1910, and as a City in 1921. Under a conservative Victorian Government, led by premier Jeff Kennett, Councils across Victoria were amalgamated, including the City of Kew, which was joined with the Cities of Hawthorn and Camberwell to form a new City of Boroondara (1994- ). This is one of two photographs recording the last Kew Council in 1994. Photos of Badge Day in Melbourne's City Square (corner of Swanston and Collins Streets) where the Victoria Naval Band is playing on 7 September 1990. There are statues promoting a sporting event in the background (Commonwealth games perhaps). A man in an old Naval uniform is watching and is later on a boat in the Yarra River with President Tony Norris. Part of a Legacy Appeal Week promotion in 1990. Also photos showing a tank in the City Square and a view along Swantson st with Legacy flags on the flag poles. Can see how much the City Square and Swanston St has changed since 1990. Similar to 00491 but there are slight variations so different years. Two of these photos were featured in the 1990 President's Report that was published with the Annual Report, it identifies the man in old Naval costume as Commander Mike Lehan. The article also says: 'On Badge Day, the public of Melbourne responded magnificently to Legacy's call for financial assistance. Our Annual Badge Appeal raised $470,000. given the depressed economy and hard times within the community, Legacy was humbled by the generosity of the community and donations from Bequests totalled $193,966 and a further $111,000 was received from Philanthropic Trusts and Foundations. The seal of the former City of Kew is held in the collection of the City of Boroondara, as is the Mayoral Chain of Office. The original design was circular and cast in high relief to allow impressions to be made. Later versions such as this modernise the style for a range of purposes.Four colour version of the City of Kew Crest, adopted by the Municipality in 1861 for use in its circular seal but later adapted as in this version for printing or for identification. There are two examples this version: both transfers designed to be affixed to Council vehicles. The collection includes 11 copies of the large transfers and one copy of the smaller version. Wodonga Shire was created in 1876 when the colonial government agreed to ratepayers' petitions to have their part severed from the Yackandandah Shire and form a new municipality. On 30th March 1973, the Wodonga Shire was granted rural city status and was officially named the Rural City of Wodonga by the Governor of Victoria, Sir Rohan Delacombe. The date this logo first came into use is unsure, but it was used prior to the granting of rural city status. In 1994, the name was retained in a new local government authority and so the Wodonga Rural City Council was born. In 1995 it was decided to give the city a fresh image, so the term 'rural' was be dropped from use except where there was a legal requirement. In December 2003, it was decided to rename the council removing the term "rural" and it is now legally Wodonga City Council. Penleigh Boyd, Robin and Patricia Boyd's son, writes “Prior to 1950 Robin, like most other amateur or hobby photographers, took black and white printed photographs. The oldest slides date from 1950 when Robin and Patricia travelled to Europe on Robin’s Robert Haddon Travelling Scholarship.” In 1948 Robin Boyd was awarded ‘joint first place’ in the Robert Haddon competition for his design of Mildura art gallery. The scholarship helped fund their first overseas trip. Robin and Patricia were passengers on the Greek ship “Cyrenia” departing in May 1950, passing through the Suez Canal and landing in Genoa five weeks later. For six months, they travelled extensively throughout Europe (predominantly driving themselves) - France, Italy, United Kingdom, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Spain.Colour slide in a mount. Gwen Barton McWilliam (nee: Nelson), OAM, BA (1933- ). Gwen McWilliam is well known as an authority on the history of Boroondara and the author of a large number of books and pamphlets about the City. She was awarded the medal of the Order of Australia in 2001 ‘for service to the community of Hawthorn and district, particularly through the research, documentation and publication of its history.’ Digitally annotated part plan of the City of Boroondara, created by Council (Library?) staff, based on annotated plans provided by the historian Gwen McWilliam, identifying significant landholdings, subdivisions and key dates. On the plan Gwen McWilliam noted that the attempt to copy her annotations had resulted in incorrect data being included, so the plans were never published.
