Research Report or Overseas Tour report, Half bound in green and black Rexene with mottled end papers, 222 pages (Gestetner printed single sided), typed report - titled "Report of H.H. Bell Chairman of the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board on his overseas trip March - October 1938". Dated 31/1/1939. He was accompanied by Mr. R. A. Spencer the Board Secretary. Reg Item 3875 indicates that their wives travelled as well with them. Has an index, notes on his visits to five cities on his voyage to England, visits to 10 UK cities, Berlin, Paris and 12 USA and Canadian cities. Includes notes on buses, gas-producer engines, PCC trams, closure of tramways, technical notes, trolley buses, conversion of Bourke St cable tram routes, overhead, motors, engines and many other topics. Note pages scanned in particular have reference to Bourke St conversion and driving habits in the UK compared to Melbourne (road hogs). The photograph shows the demolition or removal of cable tram track in Swanston St Melbourne. The reference notes that work commenced 27/12/1925 and that conversion was completed by 24/1/1926. Given the worksite it would be most likely late December 1925. Note the large unsilenced air compressor, the large crowd of on-lookers and that Swanston St northbound seems to remain open for traffic. In the background are the Royal Hotel Arcade entrance and the Melbourne Town Hall. This photograph is Public Records Office photo H109 in the Victorian Railways collection. The 20th Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles) was raised in 1920 as part of the 3rd Cavalry Brigade, 2nd Cavalry Division, Citizen Military Forces, with Headquarters at Seymour and depots along the Goulburn Valley from Mansfield to Tocumwal in southern NSW. In December 1941, 20th Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles) converted from horse to mechanised, initially as 20th Motor Regiment. In 1943 the Regiment was deployed to Merauke, Dutch New Guinea. Upon its return in April 1945, the Regiment was redesignated 20th Pioneer Battalion. It was disbanded following the end of the war. 20th Light Horse was the only light horse regiment to serve overseas in WWII.This is one of a collection of photographs featuring a Light Horse regiment drawn from rural and regional Victoria in the period immediately prior to mobilisation for World War 2 (1939-1945).Black and white photograph of large group of horsemen on beach and crossing dunes at Torquay, Victoria 1940." Further notes from Rod Atkins 11/7/2019: The cement mixer was state of the art machine at the time. "Buddy" in the USA were making them but this one is slightly different and may have been made by a company call AAC in Sheffield U.K. You can just make out the word " ….field" etc … on the water tank . The sign; now this is very interesting. "The Foundation Company" is the Australian company of the one in London.. from The Argus at the time. run by no less than by Herbert Del Cott Ply Ltd. (you can just make that out in the bottom line of the sign.) A rather interesting person in Melbourne society between the wars. His name pops up a lot in The Argus. was not short of a pound either.... Had his "Buick" stolen from Russell Street in 1920. Had some issues with wages on Wellington Street conversion. Looks to have run a electrical business before seeing opportunity with cable tram replacement coming up. In the 1930' lived in Stevenson Street, Kew. Travelled a lot to Europe. This clinometer, is a hand-held optical scientific instrument used in surveying to measure vertical angles. It is used to measure the angle of elevation from the ground in a right-angled triangle. It may have been used by a surveyor or a forester to measure the height of tall things where you couldn't possibly reach to the top of e.g. flag poles, buildings or trees.This item is an example of an early hand held measuring instrument..
