Kitty (Catherine) Sandow and Joyce Rowe grew up in Linton and attended Linton State School. Kitty Sandow (1916-1984) married Reg Jennings in 1946. Joyce Rowe (1912-1997) married Mick (Martin) Chung in 1931. Kitty and Reg took over the management of Kitty's parent's grocery and confectionery shop, which then became known as "Jennings' Milk Bar". Joyce, a descendant of the Nicol family, worked at Nicol's bakery. Her husband Mick Chung worked for the railways.Enlarged black and white copy of original photograph which has been mounted on card. The tram tracks are at a lower level than bitumen roadway causing a rough undulating surface for motor vehicles. Extra works lighting is hanging from the overhead on one side of the junction suggesting future night works. This junction would eventually be relaid in mass concrete. Folkart was operated by Pamnela Hipwell and was permanently closed Januray 2020. "Folkart has been central to the Warrandyte streetscape since 1975 when it took over from Les Gilholm’s milk bar (see photo below). John and Betty Hipwell were amongst the first to start importing Asian clothing, jewellery and homewares. Eltham Gateway, Sweet D Lites, 820 Main Road, Eltham. Former Burgoyne shop and Post Office, now home to San Antonio Barbershop. Once affectionately known as the Hilltop milk bar, or Burgoyne’s, this is one of the only three remaining early twentieth century village shops in Eltham and as the community’s first post office. In the 1920’s, the post office was run from a tiny 6 by 6 corrugated iron shed at the side of the store. Miss Hunniford, the post mistress, would give you your mail or take your letters to send, as there was no postal delivery service at that time. In an emergency, such as illness, you could send a telegraph for tuppence (around two cents) a word. Later, this was the site of the Eltham’s first telephone exchange. Community events invited the community to contribute their images and memories to the BMI collection, and engage in creative activities. Lou's Cafe c. 1987. In the 1930s and early 40's it was Riches Cafe and Billiards Saloon. Sold to Halligan's, Duggans, Jerry Cowell until 1951 when Luths took over the building as a Car and Tractor agency. Next door was Bennett's Shoe Repair Shop which was later a Stock & Station Agency. Miss Olive Codling was a Foundation Member and a Life Member of the Wodonga Historical Society. Many of her prize-winning photos are held in the Society Collection. She also held a range of roles and committee positions in a wide range of Wodonga community organisations. These included the Horticultural Society, the Wodonga Arts Council, the Wodonga Camera Club and the Wodonga Lapidary Club. These buildings held a variety of businesses over many years. The building on the left operated as a butcher shop, but at times was also a cafe and the site of Whitehouse Motorcycles in the early 2000s. The business on the right at various times operated as "The Tuck Shop", a cafe, a milk bar and grocery shop. A Bendigo advertiser article titled 'Children's Colourful Display given at The National Fitness Youth Rally'. The Bendigo Branch of the Victorian National Fitness Council held its second annual youth rally. The article includes two photos (1) Young women from the Bendigo Teachers' College marching before the rally at the Upper Reserve. They are marching in front of a shop called 'Wanda - Inn Milk Bar'. To the right behind them is a business titled 'R. White'. (11) The second photo is of a vaulting display given by the Mackenzie Street Methodist Senior Group at the rally.
