The Pickersgill family were the original settlers on Churchill Island, and amongst the earliest at Griffiths Point, now San Remo. Samuel Jabez Pickersgill, is the seventh of nine children of Samuel and Winifred Pickersgill of Churchill Island fame. Samuel Jabez lived from 1866 – 1956, and in his old age wrote down his memoirs of his early years in the 1870s and 1880s. Corporal Frederick Edward Woodley, No. VX24588 of 2nd/10th Field Company, Royal Australian Engineers, with his wife Ruby, eldest son Arthur and John, pictured beside the shed on Cowes Jetty prior to his departure for active service overseas. January 1941. Fred subsequently voyaged from Sydney to Singapore (via Western Australia) on the troop ship Queen Mary. He was taken prisoner-of-war by the Japanese at the fall of Singapore and imprisoned at the Changi P O W Camp. Later, after being on the missing list for some two years, it was learned that he was imprisoned at the most infamous Sandakan P O W camp in North Borneo from where he did not return. Fred was 37 years of age when this photo was taken. St Pauls was built for the Mission of St James and St John Melbourne as a home for wayward boys, opening in 1928. It later became an orphanage. The Clarke twins, Jimmy and Jack, were born at San Remo on the 15/5/1887. Parents were Captain George and Mrs Clarke. George Clarke died 1904. Ada & Joe Walton were born at Newhaven, Phillip Island a day after the Clarke boys. The midwife, Mrs Findlay, attended both births. Ada Walton married Norm Churchill of Kilcunda. they had a son, Joe. Joe Walton and wife had two sons, Brian & Arnie. Joe became a builder and lived all his life on the Island.
