Photograph, Camperdown Football Team, c1940-41
The men photographed were members of the Camperdown Football team some time in 1940-41. Camperdown in regional SW Victoria is an important centre for the surrounding cattle and sheep farms. Panayiotis Raftopoulos (pictured in a suit on the right next to the 'mascot' in white) owned the Leura Cafe in the town and involved himself in local social and sporting clubs. Panayiotis was the father of Yianniko Raftopoulos. Many Ithacans settled in regional Victoria and often owned and operated cafes in country towns. The young couple standing outside the stone cottage in Kioni, Ithaca are Yianni Rafopoulos (Bourlotos) and Diamando (Manto) Raftopoulos nee Paizis. The house is typical of the traditional stone cottages built on Ithaca in times past. Although similar cottage are still standing, some of them lovingly restored, there are also many deserted and in disrepair or ruin as a result of migration over generations and inheritance issues. Ithacan Naki Raftopoulos (centre) served in the Civilian Military Forces during WW 2 and is pictured with Arthur Pantatzis (left) and Theo Spirakos (Spirason). A number of Ithacan Greek men and Australian born men of Ithacan descent served in the Australian defence forces during World War 2. The three soldiers, all from Ithaca, served with the Australian Civilian Military Forces during World War 2. They are pictured at Camp Pell, Royal Park Melbourne where a large military camp was located during World War 2. Naki Raftopoulos is the man being shaved. He migrated as a young boy in the early 1930. Initially the family settled in the Mildura area where other members of the Raftopoulos family were established. Eventually they moved to Melbourne.During the period of the second world war, Ithacans who were unnaturalised were recruited into the Civilian Military Forces as 'Allied Aliens' and served the war effort on the home front. The photograph was taken at an Ithacan picnic held at Mentone Racecourse in 1935. Members of the IPS Committee are pictured with their families together with two official guests, Father Theophylaktos Papathanasopoulos from the Melbourne Orthodox Parish, and Father Timotheos Evangelimides, the Archbishop of the Greek Church in Australia, both pictured standing in the centre of the group. Vicki Raftopoulos(Black) is seated 3rd from the left and Arthur Raftopoulos is standing 3rd from right and Stathi Trohoulas is standing far right. Melbourne's first Greek Orthodox Church 'Evangelismos' in Victoria Parade East Melbourne was consecrated in 1901. Ithacans, as members of the Greek Orthodox Community, were directly involved in its establishment. A.J.Lucas the founding president of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society was one of a number of prominent Greeks who advanced funds to help with the purchase of the East Melbourne site upon which the church was built. The leaflet encouraging members to re-elect Ithacan Konstantinos Raftopoulos (Ravinos) to the committee of the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria, describing him as a proven and experienced committee member. The Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne was established in 1897 by some of the first Greek residents of Melbourne, including a number of Ithacans. It is the oldest Greek organisation in Australia and the second oldest Greek organisation of the diaspora after the Greek Community of Alexandria-Egypt. It has supported the Greeks who had settled in Melbourne and established many programs such as a Greek Language School and dance classes which has helped maintain Greek culture amongst Australians of Greek descent. A view of the village of Kioni was taken by Diamanto (Manto) Raftopoulos in 1972. Kioni is a beautiful harbour village on the island of Ithaca. In the summer months it is a popular destination for tourists and for yachts sailing the Ionian.Man Ithacans from the village of Kioni migrated to Australia and settled in Melbourne. The Merbein shops were originally owned by Spiros Raftopoulos (Levendi) who migrated from Kolieri, Ithaca, Greece. The family conducted a business in Merbein during the 1930s before relocating to Melbourne.Some Greeks who migrated to Australia during the first half of the twentieth century settled in larger country towns throughout regional Victoria.A coloured photograph of the exterior view of a group of single storey shops with a verandah across the front of the buildings.
