There is also the remains of the old well. The old smoke house used to be down there also. All these things have disappeared a long time ago. The house is the only thing that remains of the Schwerkolt property. The wine cellars and other buildings fell down years ago after the bush fires burnt the wooden supports. You will notice the toilet has about 3 boards off the top. Alice Bertha Schwerkolt was the second daughter of Louis and Francesca (nee Both) and the granddaughter of August Johann and Paulina Schwerkolt. In 1913 she married William Tanner.|The donor Rosemary Tanner had married Edgar William Tanner and is the daughter-in-law of Alice Bertha.Framed sepia photograph of Alice Bertha Schwerkolt ( 1891-1954) in an afternoon gown. Proceedings were opened in the Visitors' Centre by Barbara Rogalski whose father had catered for the Cottage opening in 1965. Rosalie Whalen (nee Schwerkolt) spoke about her early years in the area, after which the group walked to the cottage where a plaque was unveiled and a tree planted. Accompanying text sent by Charles - 'This is another photo of front side (facing Mitcham township) You see there is a lot of dried grass lying about which is a serious fire risk to the new houses which have been built. The verandah posts on the corner have rotted away and let the verandah down a foot. The roof on the kitchen is in a bad way. You will notice the chimney has a lean of about a foot. Dot Browne is a veteran athlete who was awarded an Order of Australia medal in 1992 for her contribution to Athletics and for 11 years as President of the Doncaster Women's Athletic Club. Sidney and Ivy-Jane Browne purchased the Lower Plenty ‘Golf Club’ Hotel in 1940. They owned it until 1943. Their daughter, Irene Stella, was born in Eltham in July 1923 and would have been between 17 and 20 years of age at the time this photograph was taken. Ivy-Jane (nee Williams) was born in Eltham in December 1899 and was the sister of George Alfred Williams who is commemorated on the WWI plaque at the back of St. Margaret’s church, Eltham, and whose name is also listed on the Cenotaph in front of the Eltham War Memorial in Main Road, Eltham. Irene Browne married Leslie Allan Walker in 1945 and following his death in 1958 she married Charles William Smith. She died in 2008 and is buried in Omeo Cemetery along with her husband, Charles Smith. Her granddaughter, Veronica Gunn, advises a few years earlier, Irene’s son took her to the hotel and spoke with the then owner who showed Irene the photo, which she confirmed was of herself. The floor is all eaten away with white ants and is all levels and the weatherboards have fallen at the ends. The roof is very bad also the gable of the stone looks not so good. The wooden kitchen is about 6 inches away from the stone house all the way around. You will notice the roof of the stone house is all colours with rust and paint. You will notice there are no spouts to take the water away.
