This book or register records the date, name and address and ship name and remarks of visiting seafarers from a wide range of origins. The logbook provides an insight into which ships and the origins of their crews were visiting Williamstown and Melbourne in 1933. Pocket Book gifted by the Australian Comfort Fund to George Denis Parker VX123730 who served with the 6th Australia Infantry Training Brigade. He was deployed in February 1944 to New Guinea and assigned to HQ New Guinea Force Details Depot. Based in Buna, in Papua, they carried out garrison duties as well as patrols around the areas surrounding Milne and Nassu Bay. In May 1944, they moved to Lae. Parker returned to Australia in June 1944.An example of a small pocket book gifted by the Australian Comforts Fund (ACF) to soldiers and other servicemen during WW2. This pocket book has a bright red cover and was given as a morale boosting gift. The minute book is a record of the activities of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society from March 1928 to June 1944. The minutes have been written in Greek which was the first language of the members.Through the records in this second minute book of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society it is possible to learn of the families who settled in Melbourne during the pre-World War years and throughout World War 2 , their occupations and lives and their concerns for families left behind in Greece during those difficult years. A foolscap sized bound minute book with tan leather binding on the spine and a green cloth cover on the front and back covers. The four corners are finished with brown leather. The inside covers are finished with purple marbled paper with cream cotton tape reinforcements. There are 578 lined pages but only 417 have been used. Three loose pages have been placed in order in the book. Two white labels ar stuck on the front cover. The figure '2' is written on the front.On a red embossed label on the spine: MINUTE / BOOK. -

This book documents visitation fo seafarers to the Williamstown rest from 1945-47. The book appears to have been donated. The contents are signed in some instances by what appear to be whole crew. It provides an insight into the comments and also the practice of some seafarers who adopted other identities such as Churchill or Clement Atlee. The book predates the requirement to supply official ID and registration.The book and register is one of the earliest to survive, only one or two others have survived as records of seafarers visiting the Missions. The minute book was compiled by committee members of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society and is a record of the club's activities from its inception in October 1916 to January 1927. The entries are written in the Greek language as most of the members of then committee during the club's early were more fluent in Greek than English.The first minute book has a record of the inaugural meeting of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society in October 1916 and subsequent meetings until January 1927. Through these records it is possible to gain information about the club's philanthropic objectives, its members and activities during those early decades of the twentieth century. The records also provide an insight into the settlement in Melbourne of Ithacan Greek community and the settlers' determination to succeed in their adopted country while retaining the ties with their homeland. A foolscap size bound book with a tan leather binding and green marbled cloth on the front and back covers. The four corners have been finished in tan leather. There is a white label with blue borders stuck on the top of the fron cover. The inside front and back covers have been finished with mauve, blue and white marbled paper.
