Binishells are reinforced concrete thin-shell structures that are lifted and shaped by air pressure. They were invented in the 1960s by Dante Bini, who built 1,600 of them in 23 countries.Colour photograph of a distinctive architectural feature known as a Binishell on the Gippsland campus. The large reinforced concrete dome is shaped and lifted by air pressure. Its inventor, architect Dr. Dante Bini, directed the construction of the Binishell in December 1979. The eleven metre high binishell, used 300 tons of concrete and reinforcing steel, was inflated by a large membrane in around one hour, using Dr. Dante Bini's ferrocement method. The Binishell was used as a place for exams and graduations. Reactive clay in the soil caused the footings of the binishell to twist, subsequently causing the shell to crack. The resulting damage diminished structural integrity, resulting in the Binishell not being used in 2004 and early 2005 while a new structure support was installed. Normal use of the building was resumed in Semester 1 2005. Eventually the external thermal membrane started to fail, and on 14 February 2009, the Binishell was demolished, with new auditorium built at the campus for classes, graduation ceremonies, exams and conferences.gippsland campus collection, binishell -

Book, Flight command: from the farm to the front line, 2014
John Oddie's (1974) appointment as deputy commander of Aussie forces in the Middle East capped a remarkable career of service to Australia. Sadly, this honour also involved the heartbreaking duty of informing families of the deaths of their husbands and sons in Afghanistan and overseeing departure ceremonies for the fallen soldiers. As well as covering the war in Afghanistan, Flight Command provides an insider's account of being a combat pilot in the first Gulf War, a commander supporting peace in Bougainville and security in Cambodia and the often harrowing experience of being a first-response commander dealing with the aftermath of the Boxing Day tsunami in Indonesia. By turns heart-warming and poignant, Flight Command is the story of a farm boy who managed to carve an international career in the military that included service in two wars.Medium size, soft cover bookjohn oddie, ballarat college -

Sketch (Concept), Joh Ebeli, Bicentenary Year Walter Withers Rock and Plaque Design by Joh. Ebeli (1988), 1988
Concept sketch for the placement of a commemorative plaque on a rock in the Walter Wither Reserve at the corner of Arthur and Bible Streets, Eltham. The rock was installed 17 May 1990. Russell Yeoman advised (14 Jun 2017 society meeting) that the Shire of Eltham had been given a plaque to commemorate Walter Withers and that the rock was sourced from west of Melbourne with funds from a local government grant. The initial crane to lift the rock in place was too small and another crane was arranged. This also proved too small to lift it until a third and larger crane was arranged. Mary Owen, granddaughter of Walter Withers unveiled the commemorative plaque at a ceremony held at Walter Withers Reserve at the corner of Bible and Arthur Streets, Eltham, 13 Oct 1990.Colour pencil and wash on paper mounted on card and sealed at edges with masking tape. A photo of the official party at the planting of the Olive Tree of Peace in the Western Lawn of the Shrine of Remembrance in 1973. Although the back of the photo says "Planting of Lone Pine tree" it is believed that it is wrong and this photo belongs with the Olive Tree of Peace photos (see 00478 and 00479). 1973 was the Golden Jubilee year of Legacy. The names on the front of the photo mentions Sir Edmund Herring who was Lieutenant General of Victoria for 27 years, which is deputy to the Governor, so he was probably acting on behalf of the Governor at the ceremony. Herring was a renowned Australian senior officer in World War II. In September 1942 he became commander of New Guinea Force. Pamphlet, The Pinkerton Forest Project, 1992
"The Pinkerton family is remembered in Melton in part due to the historic graves of the original settler, Margaret Pinkerton, and four of her grandchildren, which were marked by a memorial cairn in 1931. Changes to sewage flood zoning in the area in the 1990s necessitated that these burials be relocated. Members of the Melton & District Historical Society oversaw a project to relocate the Pinkerton graves and cairn 200 metres from their original site to their current resting place at Mount Cottrell. This relocation ceremony took place on 8 November 1992, with the participation of local school students and with Pinkerton descendants playing a central role. This occasion also marked the opening of the Pinkerton Forest Project, which saw 50 hectares of degraded woodland in Surbiton Park protected for regeneration". Booklet, Valedictory Address, 1946
An address published by Melbourne Technical College and delivered by Capt. C.H. Peters, M.C., Past President of College Council, Hon. treasurer, Melbourne Technical College. The occasion was a conferring ceremony held on 4 October 1946, and Peters was introduced by College President, L.-Col. J.G. Gillespie (Melbourne Legacy President 1938). In his speech Peters exhorted the graduating students to embrace the values of 'Courage, Sincerity and Kindliness' and makes frequent reference to the desirable qualities of a 'real man'. The fact that all the students were male was to be expected in an institution which began as 'The Working Men's College'. Although the speech was intended to be inspirational the hackneyed phrases and over use of cliches were probably the reason for the pencilled 'Gawd' on the front cover.Indicative of attitudes immediately after WWII, and the social reach of Melbourne Legatees.Printed address, 1 sheet folded thin card (buff) and 2 sheets folded paper (white), black type."Gawd!" pencilled on front cover; initialled in pencil.speech, jim gillespie -

Dora Walker, a member of the Ladies Harbour Lights Guild married H.P. Simpson on 14 February 1928. The wedding was celebrated at the Mission's chapel at 2.45pm. The article in the Herald of the day describes the event: "WEDDING AT SEAMEN'S CHAPEL Reception at Hotel Windsor The pretty little chapel at the Sea men's Institute was packed with interested friends this afternoon, when Miss Dora Walker, one of the Mission's most enthusiastic and efficient voluntary helpers, chose it as the setting for her marriage with Mr H. P. Simpson, son of Mr and Mrs J. H. Simpson, of Mornington. A group of her fellow workers decorated the chapel with lovely pink and white gladioli, carnations and roses. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. J. R. Weller, chaplain of the Mission, and the bride was given away by her father, Mr A. W. Walker, of Manning road, East Malvern. She wore a lovely ivory georgette frock, the finely tucked skirt being fashioned with a deep transparent hem of Chantilly lace. Over it fell a beautiful Honiton lace veil mounted on tulle and arranged to give the ef fect of a train. Fragrant white roses composed her bouquet. Two attendants followed her down the aisle — her sister, Miss Molly Walker, and Miss Ella Kendall — both wearing dainty shrimp pink georgette frocks and large crinoline straw hats in the same shade with a dainty edging of tulle. They carried bouquets of pink cactus dahlias nnd delphiniums. Mr Louis Buscombe was best man, and Mr George Thompson grooms man. Photograph - Black and White, The University of Ballarat Mace, 1996, 1996
The University's mace was carried in procession for the first time during the Graduation ceremonies in May 1996. The mace was presented to the University by former Chief Commissioner of the Ballarat City Council, Vern Robson, at a ceremony on 02 February, following a national competition for its design, sponsored by the Council. (The Flag, Issue 2, July 1996) Nineteen artists responded to the competition which called for a design that would embody a distinctive Australian image reflecting the heritage of the city and in relationship with gold, an Aboriginal element and the history of the University. The winning entry, dominated by a poppet head, was submitted by Central Victorian artist/sculptor Trefor Prest, a sessional lecturer in sculpture at the University.(The Flag, Issue 2, July 1996) The Herald Sun of 03 February 1996 reported 'the new mace shows importance elements of Ballarat's heritage as well as the university's focus on the future. The artist emphasises the egalitarian nature of Australia as embodied in Ballarat's famous slice of history - the Eureka uprising. ... The mace has a poppet head at the top of the shaft - an unusual element for a mace - but it represents Ballarat's mining history and the University's evolution from the Ballarat School of Mines. An opening egg at the top stands for the nurturing of development and learning. The mace's straight shaft is depicted as the tree of knowledge and, incorporating a bark canoe scar, Ballarat's Aboriginal heritage. At the end of the shaft is a surveying device, which represents precision and accuracy ads embodied in the university's academic pursuits.' Bob Morrell of the University organised the national competition to design the mace and said 'It is in keeping with the university's logo, 'proudly flying the flag', which incorporates the Southern Cross.' Trefor Prest lectured in Sculpture at the University of Ballarat from 1995-1996.Black and white photograph showing three men holding the new University of Ballarat (now Federation University) mace. program, The Coolgardie Water Supply, 1903
This program belonged to Dr James Kerr. Conceived by Engineer-in-Chief C.Y. O’Connor and completed in 1903, the Coolgardie Goldfields Water Supply Scheme comprised a reservoir on the Helena River, eight steam-driven pumping stations and 566 kilometres of steel pipeline supplying 23,000 kilolitres of water daily to the arid goldfields of Western Australia. The project was officially opened by Sir John and Lady Forrest in January 1903. "Great pomp and ceremony heralded the arrival of water and the opening of the Scheme. Clean, fresh water could now be easily obtained in some of Australia's harshest country. However, this victory came at a great cost. The stress of the bold project was too much for O’Connor, who, after enduring endless criticism, took his life on 10 March 1902, before the Scheme was completed." - Western Australian Museum : The Coolgardie Goldfields Water Supply Scheme was an ambitious engineering feat because at the time water had never been lifted so high nor pumped so far (about 560 km). The Scheme, which pumps water from the better-watered coastal area, operates to this day. This item is associated with an historic event in the history of opening up arid areas of Australia to settlement. The item is associated with Dr James Kerr, the first doctor to settle in Orbost.A souvenir program from the opening of the works of the Coolgardie Water Supply. It has a maroon cover with gold print.
