The Aitken Gap Gaol was originally constructed at the Gap Settlement on the Calder Highway in 1857 for the gold escorts. It was relocated to its present site outside the Sunbury Police Station in Macedon Street between 1989 and 1991.A coloured photograph of the relocated Aitken Gap Gaol. This medal/badge was given to Wilfred Clarence Busse, born in Chiltern in 1898, supposedly during his time at Wesley College. The lion on the badge is a perfect match for Wesley College's logo, and the words Sapere Aude are the school's motto. Busse completed his secondary education as Wesley College in the early twentieth century, and went on to study law at the University of Melbourne. As a lawyer, he spent time in the room of Supreme Court Judge Bernard Cussen (1859-1933). Judge Cussen was popular, known for being just and precise and for completing through statutory consolidation in his spare time. As well as working as a lawyer, Busse wrote historical fiction inspired by his life in Chiltern, these included The Blue Beyond; A Romance of the Early Days in South Eastern Australia" and "The Golden Plague: A Romance of the Early Fifties," which won the T.E.Role gold medal for the best historical novel in 1930 and went on to become a best seller. He was a member of the Chiltern Athenaeum until his death in 1960. Wesley College was founded in 1866 in St. Kilda by Rev. James S. Waugh, Dr James Corrigan, Rev. Daniel Draper and businessman Walter Powell. Wesley College was a founding member of the Associated public School of Victoria in 1908. Originally a boys school, coeducation was introduced in the 1970s, and the school continues to function today and has a reputation as one of the best schools in Victoria witth regards to VCE and IB scores. This item is significant for its connect to W.C. Busse and his literary and non-fiction work inspired by Chiltern. The object is a metal-open work badge depicting a stylised lion surrounded by a oval, which appears to resemble a belt, and bears the words Sapere Aude (translation Dare to be Wise). Below the main body of the badge is a short chain attached to a safety pin at the other end. Harold Desbrowe-Annear designed the Springthorpe Memorial, while Bertram Mackennal sculpted the statuary on the sarcophagus. William Guilfoyle is belived to have advised on the design of the garden.A temple tomb in the form of a Greek temple with a triangular pediment. Dark pillars on a flat, paved base support the plinth of the memorial. The memorial is situated on lawn, surrounded by trees and shrubs. Between the pillars, a glass enclosure can be clearly seen. Edward George Kilburn, of Ellerker & Kilburn, designed 'Byram' (later renamed 'Goathland', 'Lowa' and 'Tara Hall') for the industrialist George Ramsden in 1888. The mansion, one of the most significant in Kew, was demolished in 1960.This is an original small photograph of this historic Kew mansion with provenance by descent from the first owners of the house.An angled view of the main hallway and staircase of Tara Hall (previously named Byram, Goathland and Lowan). To the right of the staircase in this Studley Park Road mansion, was a large inglenook fireplace surrounded by stucco decoration. The latter was a characteristic of the architect, Edward G. The site of the former Kew Congregational Church was the earliest 'built' place of religion in Kew. An earlier building by Charles Vickers was replaced by a new brick church designed by Albert Purchas. This is an East German cap which presumably would have been worn by a German airman. It is a fairly recently made piece, dating to the 1980’s or 90’s.This cap has historic significance as a piece of East German airforce uniform. Itnis a fairly recently made piece, dating to approximately the 1980’s-90’s. It is also in excellent condition.A grey fabric peaked cap with fine blue trims and a black plastic head cover. There is a silver fabric rope looped around a silver metallic stud on either side if the cap. Attached to the front/centre of the cap is a metallic ornament depicting the east German logo in red and silver, surrounded by a silver wreath and wings. Above this is a silver metallic ornament depicting a propeller surrounded by two curved pieces of foliage. There is a faux leather strap on the interior and a square of lighter grey fabric stitched into the underside of the cap. This contains inscriptions. There is also a round yellow sticker on the interior side of the plastic head cover. The Villa Alba Museum is cultural institution committed to the collection, study and display of 19th century interior decorative finishes, and the components of 19th and 20th century interior decoration. Most rooms in this historically and aesthetically significant house have stone (typically marble) fireplaces that are inset with plain and decorative tiles produced by the company of Mintons Ltd.Born digital photograph of the fireplace in the main bedroom of Villa Alba. The original 1880s white marble mantel surround has a raised iron and brass cast iron grate with hearth and side tiles by Mintons Ltd. The marble fire surround has being carved in a conventional style and lacks the opulence of what was at the time described as the grandest bedroom in the Colony, whereas the raised grate features decorative brass sun symbols and scrolling on the iron panels. The 'grey monochrome' surround tiles, of which there are eight in situ were produced to design by John Moyr Smith by Mintons Ltd as part of the 'Waverley' series (No, 1607) of which there were twelve subjects (Mintons Catalogue, p. 62/206). The selection conforms to William Greenlaw's desire to symbolically represent Scottish themes in the decoration of the house. It also relates to the mural in the dining room architrave of scenes from the novels of Sir Walter Scott. This campaign medal (the Victory Medal) was issued to all those who received the 1914 or 1915 Star and to most of those who received the British war medal. Recipientss had to be mobilised in any service between 5 August 1914 and 11 November 1918. This one belonged to James Pullar Cameron 8 Light Horse Regiment AIF. He was killed in action at Lone pine.James Pullar Cameron was the son of Robert Cameron one of the earliest settlers on the Orbost flats. He was a trooper in the 8 Light Horse Regiment and died at Gallipoli on 7 August 1915.A circular bronze medal. One side shows the winged figure of Victory with her left arm extended and holding a palm branch in her right hand. Handkerchiefs have been used for centuries as a piece of cloth deemed useful for personal hygiene. They are usually kept in one's pocket but at times through history have been fluttered to attract attention or send a message. In harder times they proved to be a cheap item often used to add interest to an outfit. This item is one of five handkerchiefs which were brought back from France after WW1 by great uncles of Gloria Redman and have been passed down through her grandmother and mother.This item has significance as an item linked to a local family and World War 1 and as such has social, and historical significance. The Tawonga Bridge over the East Kiewa River linked Mt Beauty with Tawonga. It was broken during Vera Hore's lifetime, 1909 - 2000. The bridge over the East Kiewa River enabled people to travel between Mt Beauty and Tawonga. Vera Hore (nee Ryder), the publican of the Tawonga Hotel, took this photo as she was a keen amateur photographer.
