Handkerchiefs have been used for centuries as a piece of cloth deemed useful for personal hygiene. They are usually kept in one's pocket but at times through history have been fluttered to attract attention or send a message. In harder times they proved to be a cheap item often used to add interest to an outfit. This item is one of five handkerchiefs which were brought back from France after WW1 by great uncles of Gloria Redman and have been passed down through her grandmother and mother.This item has significance as an item linked to a local family and World War 1 and as such has social, and historical significance. These cuff links were produced for the Warrnambool City Council presumably to give as gifts to visiting dignitaries etc. They may also have been available for the public to purchase. Warrnambool, first settled in 1847, was proclaimed a Municipality in 1856, a Borough in 1863, a Town in 1883 and a City in 1918. These cuff links are of minor interest as an example of an item produced for the Warrnambool City Council – to use either as gifts or to sell to the public as a memento of the city. These are round metal cufflinks (2) outlined in gold with gold pins (two prongs and a bar) for attachment to the shirt sleeves. The cuff links have the City of Warrnambool logo with gold, blue and cream printing and enamelling. The cuff links are in a plastic box which has a white base and a clear plastic lid and red velvet lining. These cuff links belonged to Harry Greening (1888-1979). He was a Warrnambool auctioneer and real estate agent, operating in the city for over 60 years. He was brought up, and later resided for some time at 230 Liebig Street. At one time his business was known as Greening and Cain Pty Ltd and operated in Koroit Street but he was also in Kepler Street and Lava Street. Over the years his real estate business was involved in the selling of many well-known Warrnambool properties, including the Lyndoch estate. These cuff links are of considerable interest as they are mementoes of the life and work of the prominent Warrnambool auctioneer and real estate agent, Harry GreeningThese are two identical gold cuff links in a rectangular shape cut across the edges. The match holder is heavily patterned, the ship’s wheel container may have held coins in the past as it is recessed at the back and the locket or coin purse is ornamented and contains what looks like a coin, perhaps a threepenny bit from the time of George V or V1.
