This particular glass bowl was a favoured ornamental type room "brightener" in the early 1900's. Although referred to as a "nappy bowl" this bowl has not the capacity for nappies but for nappy pins. This was a period in time before the nappy ties and instant nappy covers.This has relevance as an object that was both practical for the early 1900's nappy changes and provided some visual relief for any "drab" household ambience, especial in rural homes. The early to mid 1900's, rural households, on the whole, were more practical and not designed for entertainment. This reflected the more serious nature which were governed by aspects of providing a living from the land and unreliable weather. By placing visually attractive ornaments within various rooms (lounge/living rooms) the transformation from a stark external environment to a more warm and friendly area was achieved. This dark amber (Marigold) carnival glass 5 inch nappy bowl has a Kookaburra press molded base and wattle blossom with waratah and flannel flower sides. The bowl has a twelve scolloped rippled rim. The Stereopticon Card viewer enabled the viewer to see photos which gave a "3D" imageHand held viewer for viewing 19th century "3D" cards..Made of aluminium and wood,the face piece is ingraved with decorative scrolls and the brand KEVUKO is in the centre surrounded by a circle and wheat leaves. The Fenton Art Glass Company was founded in 1905 by brothers Frank L. Fenton and John W. Fenton in an old glass factory in Martins Ferry, Ohio. Originally, they painted glass blanks from other glass makers, but started making their own glass when they became able to buy the materials they needed. They moved across the Ohio river to Williamstown, West Virginia, and built a factory in 1906. The first year for glass production was 1907. Frank Fenton was the designer and decorator. Jacob Rosenthal, a famous glass chemist is known for developing chocolate and golden agate glass. Perfume bottles for the Wrisley Company in 1938 were made in French opalescent glass with the hobnail pattern In 1939, Fenton started selling Hobnail items in milk glass. During the Great Depression and World War II, Fenton produced practical items such as mixing bowls and tableware. Fenton ceased "traditional" glassmaking at the Williamstown, West Virginia factory in July of 2011. A lot of people had them in their childhood and remember them with affection. This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. This was originally built as a State Savings Bank of Victoria branch in 1916. The first manager was Mr Campbell Cameron. On 26 August 1990, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) entered into an agreement with the Treasurer of Victoria for a merger with the State Bank of Victoria (SBV). All former State banks were given new signage in November 1992. The CBA operated the branch for a relatively short period of time with the branch closing in 2000. Community pressure for a local bank resulted in the Bendigo Bank opening a branch on the site in 2002. Ostrich eggs were a novelty item found in many homes in the 19th and early 20th centuries, though in Australian homes they were more likely to be emu eggs. Some ostrich eggs may have been brought to Australia from South Africa after the Boer War or purchased by travellers to foreign lands at other times. This ostrich egg has no known provenance.This ostrich egg has been in the collection of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society for 45 years and the only known connection it has to Warrnambool is seen in the fact that the donor was Mrs Uebergang and the Uebergang name is well-known in our district as the Uebergangs were pioneering settlers in the Allansford/ Warrnambool area. This is a cream-coloured ostrich egg resting in a circular cavity in the centre of a rectangular wooden frame. The Butterick Company was established in 1863 and was the first to mass-produce sewing patterns. The company was acquired by the CcCall Pattern Company in 2001. These scales come from the Nullawarre Post Office and would have been used there for most of the 20th century. Nullawarre is a small settlement 25 kilometres south east of Warrnambool. It was first settled in the late 1860s and 70s and the main agricultural pursuit for the area today is dairying. The first Nullawarre school was opened in 1878 and the Nullawarre Post Office operates today in the Nullawarre General Store. These scales are of interest as a memento of the type of weighing scales used in Post Offices in Victoria in the early to mid 20th century. They are also of local interest as they come from the Nullawarre Post Office.This is a metal set of scales with a balance mechanism on a metal stand. The balance has a circular tray at one end to hold weights An oval dish to hold items to be weighed is a separate item that sits at the other end of the balance. The scales were once painted green and some traces of the green paint are visible. Two weights are with this item. These dinner plates were used at the Criterion Hotel in Kepler Street, Warrnambool, about the mid 1900s. The Criterion Hotel was opened in 1872 with the first licensee, John Tate. The Humm family was associated with the hotel from the 1880s to 1919 and members of the McGennan family were licensees and owners of the hotel for over 50 years in the 20th century. The hotel closed in 2008 and the building was demolished in 2013.These plates are of great interest as excellent examples of the dinner plates used at the Warrnambool Criterion Hotel in the mid 20th century. The Criterion Hotel was a Warrnambool landmark for over 130 years.These are two white vitrified china plates. One is slightly smaller than the other but they are both dinner –plate size and made for hotel use. They are circular in shape with a wide outer band and the base or body of the plates slightly recessed. The name of the hotel is printed in red on the side of the plates in an oval decorative pattern. Details of the manufacturer and supplier are printed on the bottom of the plates. The containers in this set would have held salt, pepper, and perhaps two types of vinegar. When bought some time in the 20th century it was a high quality item and would have been found in the home of a person of some means and perhaps used when visitors were being entertained. Today a simple salt and pepper set is more likely to be used during meals. This cruet set has no known local provenance but it is a very attractive item and is kept as a memento of the past. This cruet set has a metal base with four round metal knobs on the bottom. The base has a handle in a bowed shape with a circular top and midway across the handle are attached four rectangular metal shapes for holding the condiments. Four cut glass containers slot into the four holders. The containers are all rectangular-shaped, two with a narrower neck and a glass stoppers, one with a narrower neck and a metal top with a perforated lid and one with a metal top with a hinged lid. This is a bathroom jug and could have been part of a set for bathroom use. It would have held mainly water, hot or cold. In the days before there were sinks with hot and cold running water in bathrooms, a jug such as this was an essential item and would have been in common use up to the first three decades of the 20th century. These photograph wallets were use in the first half of the 20th century when films were sent away to be processed. Kodak used these packaging items to promote their brand. Images of women were very popular on these wallets, with the ‘Kodak Girl’ positioned by Kodak as an important mascot or symbol to suggest the ease and accessibility of photography to the masses – a symbol which drew on traditional understandings of gender roles.They are colourful reminders of a time period when people eagerly awaited the arrival of their processed prints. This handmade women’s nightgown features hand-worked Broderie Anglaise yoke and trim. It is one of seven handmade items of white cotton underwear, all made with beautiful needlework and embroidery skill. The lingerie once belonged to the donor’s great-grandmother’s family, the Paton family of ‘Trefnant’, Yangery, in southwest Victoria. This fine white unglazed porcelain figurine is one of six donated together. The bisque material was easy to carve and allowed fine detail. Figurine ornaments were popular for table decorations between the mid-18th to early 19th centuries. The Kew Historical Society's Fashion & Design collection includes a small and representative collection of reticules, purses and handbags, purchased, inherited or collected by members of the Society. These items date from the Nineteenth and Twentieth centuries, and conform to fashions and styles popular during the period of their use. Some of the items are handmade, while others are mass-produced commercial products. The handbag was donated to the collection by Dione McIntyre.The McIntyre Collection of clothing and clothing accessories forms one of the largest single donations to our Fashion & Design collection. It includes clothing and clothing accessories worn by four women in the Cohen and McIntyre families across three generations. The items worn by Melbourne architect, and Kew resident, Dione McIntyre date from the 1960s and 1970s, and include evening wear, day wear, hats and shoes. As Dione McIntyre often accompanied her husband, fellow architect Peter McIntyre, to formal events, there are a number of pieces of evening wear among the items. The McIntyre Collection also includes items worn by women of an earlier generation: by Lilian Cohen, Dione McIntyre's mother, and by her mother-in-law, the wife of the architect Robert McIntyre. At the other end of the chronological spectrum are a number of outfits belonging to, worn and donated by Annie McIntyre. These include outfits created by notable late 20th century Australian and/or international fashion designers. The McIntyre Collection is significant historically and artistically as it includes examples of design that demonstrate changing tastes in fashion over an 80-year period. The collection is also significant in that it includes the work of a large number of Melbourne designers from the 1960s to the 1990s. This coat would have been part of a St Johns Brigade ambulance uniform. The buttons were made by A J Parkes, who manufactured buttons for the Australian Defence force. A J Parkes began manufacturing plastic injection moulded buttons from the early 1980's which suggests that the coat would have been made and worn during the late 20th century.This item is representative of a particular piece of uniform that would have been worn by a member of the St Johns Ambulance Brigade. It has historic significance as an item dating to the late 20th century which may have been used in the service of wounded military personnel. It also has some areas of staining which could have been coused by contact with blood. This could potentially be useful for scientific research purposes.Off white knee length coat with long sleeves. There is an epoulette on each shoulder and pointed collars. There is a deep waist pocket on either side of the coat. There is one silver plastic button at the top of each pocket. These have the St John Ambulance symbol on the front, which consists of an eight pointed cross, with two very small lions and two very small unicorns nestled in the corners of the cross. These motifs are surrounded by the words "THE ST JOHN AMBULANCE BRIGADE". The epoulettes are fastened with one identical button each. Underneath each epoulette there is also a clear plastic button attached the shoulder seam. Each sleeve has a 36mm long cuff which is fastened with one St John Ambulance Brigade button each. There are 10 clear plastic buttons that fasten the entire front of the coat. The back has two pleats commencing near the nape of the neck. The back of the collar on the interior seam has a label which has been cut and shows only a small amount of detail. Printed in faded blue on the label is: "E.R. Worn by the grandmother of Marjorie Burton (nee Whiteman) in England early 19th century. Marjorie Burton ( nee Whiteman), born 12 June, in Birmingham, England came to Orbost in 1995. When she was admitted to Waratah Lodge, Orbost, following a stroke, her daughter Ann Quaadgras donated a number of her mother's personal belongings to the Orbost & District Historical Society. Marjorie died in 2015.These items are examples of the needlework skills of women in the 19th century. This is the biography of Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892), a famous and influential English Protestant preacher who attracted a great following throughout the British Empire and U.S.A. He reached the masses by producing many religious tracts costing one penny and publishing his sermons and his John Ploughman books with their simple homilies. It appears that many of his books were in Warrnambool homes in the 19th century.This book is of interest as it details the life of Charles Spurgeon, a person whose sermons and writings were familiar to many people in Warrnambool in the 19th century. The Warrnambool Examiner newspaper frequently carried news items about Spurgeon’s eloquent preaching and the crowds he was drawing. It also published some of his sermons and reported at length his final illness and death. One of the photograph albums in the collection of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society includes a photograph of Charles Spurgeon and his wife, thus appearing to indicate his popularity and influence extended as far as Warrnambool and district. This is a hard cover book of 330 pages. The cover has a mauve background with gold lettering on the front cover and spine. The front cover has an image in gold of the Spurgeon’s home and an image in black and grey of the Metropolitan Tabernacle. The spine has an image in gold, black and grey of Charles Spurgeon. The book has 19 chapters and 20 black and white illustrations. This child’s wash board, a play item, is possibly home-made. Wash boards for rubbing and washing clothes were common household clothes- washing items in Australia until the mid 20th century, along with wood coppers, washing troughs, copper sticks and simple wringers. By the 1950s and 60s washing machines were becoming more prevalent and the wash board was no longer a common item in households. Rolling pins have been found to have existed in several early civilizations and glass pins were especially popular in the first half of the 20th century. They were mostly filled with very cold water or ice when pastry dough was being rolled but sometimes they were filled with hot water, depending on the food preparation being rolled. They could still be found in some kitchens today. This item is retained as a reminder of a household item that was used in the past but may still be of use today.This is a clear glass cylindrical object with two glass handles at each end. One end is enclosed and the other is open and this end would have originally had a stopper of some kind, probably a cork. Box cameras were first produced in the late 19th century and were intended to be used by amateur photographers. This type of camera was a simple one with the lens at one end and the film at the other and the provision for 12 photographic plates. The spring-loaded lens folded into the camera and one side of the box served as a base for the lens to sit on. Cameras of this size and shape were made until the mid 1920s. This camera case is retained for display purposes.This is a wooden rectangular box which is covered in black leather. The box is a camera case and has a top lid with metal hinges and metal clips and five glass apertures. There are two knobs or buttons which were originally adjustable mechanisms and the remnants of a leather strap on one side of the box. The leather on the outside is partially torn away. Inside the box the photographic mechanisms and the lens are missing but there is a part of the metal spring still evident.
