Hospitalised 8 Nov 1916 for trench foot and rejoined unit 11 Feb 1917. WIA 27 Feb 1917 GSW left forearm and rejoined 30 July 1917. WIA 4 Oct 1917 GSW left finger and rejoined 1 Jan 1918. Document - ABBOTT COLLECTION: FISHING CATALOGUE, 1939
Founded by Moritz Michaelis and Isaac Hallerstein in 1866. Isaac Hallenstein had previously been partnered with Hermann Buttner and they were travelling salesmen in the Goldfields. Eventually they bought Cleghorn's tannery in Melbourne but Buttner sold his part to Moritz, Isaac's uncle. The expanded the leather business until they had branches in most states and New Zealand and London. After WW1 and the deaths of the founders, the company moved into a variety of leather goods, including shoes, footballs and golf bags. Honour Board - Shield, Dockers Plains, 1921
This Honour Shield was the work of the school Sloyd pupils and Head Teacher. The honour book written by the Head Teacher Mr Thomas Kidman contains the names of 14 past students of Docker's Plains Primary School who served during the First World War. Handwritten summary of service pertaining to each past student including Nurse Alice M BYRNE who served in Egypt and France.Honour Board in the shape of a shield and carved from timber originally made by the Sloyd students and head teacher of Docker's Plains State School in 1921. The Honour Board centrally houses a casket with glass door containing a velvet covered book containing the names of 14 past students who served during World War 1. When the school closed in the 1940's resident were invited the take items and William Richardson, brother of Private Leslie George Richardson who died in June 1916 from meningitis prior to embarkation, chose the shield and framed photograph collection which his mother contributed to. Photographs and medals of brothers Leslie and James HANDLEY both killed in action in FRANCE 2458 Leslie Lionel HANDLEY was born at Benalla and enlisted at Wangaratta on 28/5/1915 aged 18 years. He served with the 14th Battalion and was killed in the field on 7/8/1916. He is buried at Pozieres in an unknown grave. 2813 James Albert HANDLEY was born at Williamstown and enlisted at Wangaratta/Melbourne on 3/10/1916 aged 29 years. He served with the 38th Battalion and was killed in the field on 18/7/1918. He is buried at Villiers-Brettoneux. This photograph depicts HMAT Nestor departing Melbourne 2nd October 1916 with Australian Troops During WW1 HMAT Nestor mainly carried troops to England including the 6th reinforcements of the 57th 58th & 60th Battalions, 16th reinforcements of the 21st 22nd 23rd & 24th Battalions and 21st reinforcements of the 5th 6th 7th & 14th Battalions.During World War I HMAT Nestor was a troopship for the Australian Expeditionary Force, and in World War II evacuated British children to Australia. She completed her final round voyage to Australia in 1950.
