Document - Report, Tramway Board, "Proposed Flying City Shunt", 11/09/1917 12:00:00 AM
Report - hand made on very thin paper, almost rice paper, 3 pages + cover note of 2/11/1921 to Mr. Wilcox, General Manager from Mr. C. W. Young and W. A. Savage, Assist Traffic Manager titled "Proposed Flying City Shunt". Report suggests that improved shunting arrangements are needed at Collins and Spencer St due to increased traffic. Notes cars can be shunted in abnormal conditions in 40 seconds. Normal shunting was 60secs it appears. Report gives details of the costs and the shunting times taken to turn cable sets around. The cover note of 2/11/1921, re-submits the report to Mr Dix from a person (can read the signature) from the Fitzroy Power House. Last page was scanned separately as a jpg file. Weapon - Cannon Ball, Victorian era
This small cannon ball was found by the donor around 1975 to 1977 when he was digging a trench to install underground cables at the Warrnambool Surfside Caravan Park' Its location is just below both Cannon Hill and the 19th century Fortifications at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village. The ball is made of iron. Cannon balls were used as ammunition for a cannon gun and fired at a target. This cannon ball is only 8 cm round, or 4.15 inches, and is likely to have been called a 4-pounder (4-pdr). The ball was made from molten iron was poured into the small opening of a two-piece mould. The seam between the moulds sometimes left a raised ring mark on the ball, as can be seen on this ball. The ridge would have been filed to make the join smooth, sometimes leaving a slightly flat area. Six 4-powder cannons were recovered from Endeavour Reef, Queensland, in 1969. They were from Captain Cook's HMS Endeavour, thrown overboard when the ship struck a reef there in 1770. They are likely to have been mounted on deck cannon carriages on the ship. Similar 4-pounder cannons were mounted on gun carriages and used as field guns. Cannons with cannon balls as ammunition were installed at Warrnambool for protection from possible invasion in the mid-to-late 19th century and early 20th century.Cannon ball, iron, black with a pitted shiny surface. It has three flat areas and evidence of a seam around the circumference. There are remnants of a possible inscription stamped into the iron. The cannon ball is a four-pounder ball. Both the Light switch and Door knob were used in Box Cottage during the late 19thC and early 20thC by the Box and Rietman families. William and Elizabeth Box purchased the two ten acre Lots of land with the Cottage in 1868 where they raised their family of 12 children and developed a flower garden producing seedlings. August and Frieda Rietman rented the Cottage 1917 with 1 acre of land and purchased it in 1935 where they raised 2 children while August established Rietman's Landscaping Pty Ltd making pressed concrete garden furniture. Porcelain is a ceramic material made by heating materials, generally including kaolin, in a kiln to temperatures between 1,200 and 1,400 °C The toughness, strength and translucence of porcelain, relative to other types of pottery, arises mainly from vitrification and the formation of the mineral mullite within the body at these high temperatures. Porcelain and other ceramic materials have many applications in engineering, especially ceramic engineering. Porcelain is an excellent insulator for use at high voltage, especially in outdoor applications, see Insulator (electricity)#Material. Examples include: terminals for high voltage cables, bushings of power transformers, insulation of high frequency antennas and many other components. Both the Light switch and Door knob were used in Box Cottage during the late 19thC and early 20thC by the Box and Rietman families. These leather soled shoes were used by railway workers undertaking work on overhead electrical cables and HV boxes. Ephemera - Ticket/s, Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramways Board (MMTB), MMTB Transfer ticket, early 1920's
Ticket - 2 1/2d, MMTB black printing on light brown paper with the value in green ink. A transfer ticket matched with Reg Item 5522. Has a "Victoria Bitter" print on the rear. Ticket No. R799195 Advice from Dean Filgate 7/1/2020 for this item and 5522: "very interesting tickets (why can't I find gems like these when I haunt old bookshops ?) and even better - a matched transfer pair ! The transfer is (I think) from the original McCaskey Systems printing for the "great fare revision" of March 1921, when most fares rose by ½d (or 1d on Sundays & Public Holidays), and is on the wider paper stock of those issues. The 2½d is from a later printing on narrower (but still "long") paper stock, but retains the black + coloured (value) ink on white paper scheme. The original issues had McCaskey's imprint and the value repeated on the back. They are a very nice pair. At some stage in the early/mid-1920s coloured paper tickets were again produced alongside the white-paper issues, before totally replacing them. Some of the colours were also altered. Sands & McDougall cornered the ticket-printing market about this time, blitzing all opposition with a press that produced 57 tickets at once - compared to everyone else's 2-at-a-time presses (Geoff Dean has more information on this). The "horizontal" format (similar to Sydney) was trialled in the late 1920s, and deemed a failure. The number of sections, their direction, and the use of Up/Down or In/Out varied over the years - I have put together a 'chronology' in order of issue, but unfortunately cannot assign dates of issue (yet ? ). 2nd email of 10/1/2021 Yes - keep those two tickets paired together (most people don't ); the only other matched transfer pair that I have seen was in Travis Jeffrey's collection. The 2½d ticket is a mid-1920s printing (from Sands & McDougall, so I am led to believe), the design being re-worked from their previous batch that had this value in red. There may have been another slight revision before the next design - of horizontal (Sydney-type) tickets - were issued. It would appear that horizontal format had already been used by the cable trams well before the electric trams, and that this "next horizontal issue" was used for both cable and electric trams. What I neglected to say before, was that this is an Electric System issue - as denoted by the "E.S." at the top: the alternate heading was "CABLE TRAMWAYS". Most enthusiasts mistake those initials to mean "Eastern System": demonstrably it is not, because there were "E.S." tickets issued specifically for use at Coburg and Essendon depots only (mostly return fares, with the destinations marked on the ticket).trams, tramways, tickets, mmtb, transfer tickets -

This is a photograph of the bridge from the Orbost side. The first pile bridge over the Snowy River was just completed by Mr Jim Granter when the 1891 flood took out the centre,. There were differences of opinion as to whether the council should pay . The Shire Secretary, Mr John Draffin, persuaded them to honour their obligations. Mr Granter and Mr Clarke finished it as a suspension bridge which was opened by Mrs William Watt. Soon after a mob of cattle stampeded, the weight snapped the cable, letting one side sag. Mr R.P. Cameron repaired it and this bridge remained until 1922. "In 1890 the contract for a bridge was let to Mr James Granter for £1450. This structure with additions and improvements made to it was to cost the ratepayers about £2,500, and its erection was proceeded with in a very satisfactory manner until, just as the greater-part of the work had been completed, the flood of 1891 came down on it, piling up mountains of logs, timber and debris against the piers, which had not been made wide enough apart to allow for. contingencies of this kind. The structure held out bravely until the turn of the flood and then gave way with a crash, about five bays from the centre disappearing in the stream." These boots show an early design of ski boots. The design of boots, materials and closures have changed dramatically as technology has evolved. Early ski boots were little more than lace-up work boots. in 1928, the Swiss ski racer Guido Reuge invented a cable binding designed to hold the heel down for alpine skiing. He named the binding after the Kandahar series of alpine ski races. After World War II, custom bootmakers developed the double boot, with a soft and comfy lace-up inner boot protected and stiffened by a thick bull-hide outer casing laced with heavy-duty corset hooks. A solution towards making boots stiffer and more durable arrived in 1954, when Swiss bike racer and stunt pilot Hans Martin patented the ski boot buckle as shown on this pair of boots. The real revolution in boot design occurred in 1966, when the Canadian ski team were equipped with plastic boots for the Alpine World Championships. Since then manufacturers have competed to further refine designs to meet a range of needs from the weekend skier to elite athletes. Ernest W (Bon) Barrie, 1909 – 1985 Melton Fire Brigade (and predecessor Bush Fire Brigade) Apparatus Officer, 1945 - 1953 Captain, 1951 - 1965 Mt Cotterill Fire Brigades’ Group Elected Group Officer, on the formation of the Group, 1967. As Group Communications Officer he operated the VL3 LY base radio station from home on a 24 hour basis for fire brigades of Melton, Rockbank, Sydenham, Diggers Rest, Toolern Vale, Truganina and Werribee. With his brother Edgar, he built the first Melton Fire Truck. It was housed on the family property until a fire station was constructed in the Melton township. Recipient of the Queens Medal, 1979 Recognised for 44 years of service on the Melton Fire Brigade Memorial Wall Plaque, dedicated May 2013 Mt Cotterell Fire Brigades G H Q and aerial was erected at No 17 - 19 First Avenue in 1974 at the home of Edna and Bon Barrie. Previously the Mt Cotterell Group VL3LY communication headquarters occupied their h ome in Ferris road at its inception in 1967. The First Avenue headquarters and map room, with radio equipment was also housed at the residence. The kit is packed in 2 wooden transit boxes. The Training Set is a semi-portable instrument for training operators in morse reading and sending and R.T. communication. The set comprises audio oscillators for morse reading, morse interference and background noise interference, power supply for microphones, an audio amplifier, and a switch board for group working with up to six independent, contained in the instructor's set. The instructor and each operator under training has a receiver-head gear, a hand microphone and a morse key. The instructor has an additional morse key used for providing morse interference. In the case of each operator, the microphones and headphones plug into an "operator's control unit" fitted to the table in front of each operator. The units also house a morse key, and are connected to the instructor's set by four-core cable. Plug and socket connections are used. The apparatus may be used for a class of up to 36 operators. Ski-Horizon is the official journal of the Federation of Victorian Ski Clubs which began publication in 1949. The were 26 original member clubs which included Albury Ski Club, Bogong Ski Club, Myrtleford Ski Club, Tallangatta and District Ski Club and Wangaratta Ski Club. Two pioneers of Falls Creek, Tom Mitchell, M.L.A., and Martin Romuld were Vice-Presidents of the Federation.This Journal is significant because it documents the early development of skiing in Victoria.The journal features stories and events chronicling developments in Victoria and internationally. Decorative Object - Coaster set, Paul Stephen-Daly trading at Louchrilau Nominees Pty Ltd, c1980
Set of 6 drink coasters, with a felt back gold plastic front with an impression of a Melbourne tram contained within a black finished cardboard box. Each coaster has the imprint of the MMTB emblem. The coasters feature: Z3 class - 1980 - has a Stephen Daly trademark logo on the rear. W2 class - 1927 A class - 1910 - 11 R Class - 1266 (Melbourne cable tram) - 1885 X class - 1924 T class - 1917 Produced by Paul Stephen-Daly trading at Louchrilau Nominees Pty Ltd, with address details and contact phone number (6 digits) and a telex number. Given it has a Z3 included, date late 1970's early 1980's. An internet search for the name shows a number of coasters produced by the same person on sale as collectables. Contains may typed and handwritten notes and draft documents in relation to MMTB Act of 1958, including explanatory paper, drafts, annotations, correspondence drafts, files notes, checking documents, correspondence with the Government, MMTB Secretary, revised schedules showing cable trams and how they were closed, track removals etc, tramways authorised by not constructed, existing tramways, descriptions of tramways. Would appear Mr. McComb did a lot of work on this project in sorting out the schedules and what the various Act provisions for them were. Set of two agreements dated 23/4/1920 between the MMTB and the Australian Tramway Employees Association .1 - two foolscap pages - pinned in top left hand corner - sets out that the MMTB has taken over from the Tramway Board, annual leave, wages, continuous service, pay rates, car repair sheds, variations, employees and signature block - Alex Cameron, H. Bell and W. O Strangward for the MMTB and John Abfalter and T. Jewell for the ATEA. .2 - three foolscap pages - pinned in top left hand corner - refers to the various Acts that formed the Board and Arbitration Act, the PMTT, Northcote council, MBCTT, carrying past agreements forward, minimum wages for cable trams workers, juniors, cost of living adjustments and application of the agreement. Digital image of "Electric Tram Driver's Certificate No. 407", issued to D. (Daniel) Patience, signed by G. Barker Instructor, with "A. W. Murdoch" stamp authorising the document, dated 23/3/1929. Donated by Betty (daughter - aged 90) and Cheryl Williams (grand daughter) of Daniel. Reported to have been the first driver leaving the then new Camberwell depot. Born in Avoch Scotland, was a police constable there, before emigrating to Melbourne. Was a cable tram Gripman in the Albert Park Area. Became an electric tram driver, then signalman at St Kilda Junction and trained as an inspector, but did not like the green uniform. Ran in the Stawell Gift of 1925 (injured foot during the race), was a Navigator on Transport RAF/RAAF flights during WW2. War memorabilia to the War Memorial Canberra. Set of three black and white prints of Bourke St, early 1950's with extensive traffic photographed in the afternoon. Photos have the cable tram track, GEC Australia (General Electric), BGE, Coles and Garrard, Myer, Post Office, Berger Paint, London Stores, Foys .1 - Looking east from about Queen St at 4pm, with two Mk 3 buses. - PTC H188 .2 - ditto with a double deck bus east bound at 215pm, PTC H189 .3 - ditto at 3pm, nearer to Elizabeth St with multiple double deck buses in the block between Elizabeth and Swanston St and extensive motor vehicle traffic. This print has been photographed from an image - has a screen. Photos maybe MMTB origin to show traffic levels in the streets. Black and white negative by Wal Jack of U206 and a C Class or N class stored at Preston Workshops. Based on image the number of the second car is number 125. Note the two cable grip cars and the bus body in the background. Rod Atkins advised 11/10/2020: "The bus body is one of the four James Motors of South Melbourne body's first fitted to the group of 12 Thornycroft "J" chassis in 1924-1925 numbered 13 to 24. Then in 1929 they were all transferred to the ADC chassis but four were retained in late thirties to early forties for possible further use. The four bodies were then fitted to the new International K6 chassis in 1943. The vehicle numbers were 19 to 308 16 to 309 24 to 311 and 18 to 312. They were finally disposed of in 1949." BHS CollectionHanro Stand Alone Counter Display Picture: A coloured picture of two men on the golf course playing golf modelling Hanro knitwear. One has on a beige long sleeve V necked cardigan. The pockets on either side have a pleat in the centre and a band at the top. The garment has a small vertical brown stripe running through out the fabric, it is buttoned up with five brown buttons. The other is a yellow V necked vest. The Vest is knitted in a small cable pattern with knit bands around the neck and arms. At the bottom on the picture is a label with white background and *Hanro in red and black print and Knitwear for men*. The very bottom printed in yellow is *'The Quality Is A Proud Tradition. The material for the front is plastic covered card. The back is green tin. A brown card rectangular strip used for a stand and has two metal holes with string attached. Compact Diskette in a paper envelope with a video made from film taken by Neville Govett with voice over by Robert Green. With the CD are a photocopy of notes provided by Neville at the time of production on the sources, how made, when and that a copy had gone to the TMSV c1980. Has explanations on how the cable system worked, shunting of tramcars, views of the cars operating in Bourke and other streets, the Gertrude and Nicholson St powerhouse and other features. The last sheet (i6) - copy of an article written by Lorna Hanna, niece to Neville, wrote for the March 2013 issue of the North and West Melbourne News, with particular notes on the North Melbourne route and its operation. CD is a copy of an original held by Robert, provided by Robert on 26/7/2014 in time for the Melbourne Open House Day. Has an introduction, a preface that gives a brief history of the tramway system in Melbourne, 20 buildings and points on interest in Melbourne and how to get there, with sketches by Clive Fink, a list of electrified routes and a cable routes at the time with details of terminals and points of interest along the route.
