Friday, September 28, 1883 was a memorable date for Wycheproof as on that day was the long-awaited official opening of the railway. It was recorded that no less than 23 parishes would act as feeder to the rail line. The Railway Station closed in December 1990 but the building was renovated in 2010 with plans for a community focus and cultural events.The arrival of rail opened up the Mallee. Local farmers began sending wheat, sheep and wool by rail. Improvements to transport stock was ongoing and the eventual rail extension north of the town, resulted in a well patronised passenger service for years. This iron would have been used locally. Wehner's Blacksmith's was founded at Orbost in 1889. Oswald Wehner began working in 1910 with his father. In 1947 Ossie's son, Tom started blacksmithing, working alongside his father. Wehner's closed in 1991. (ref. Originally a parish church, St Paul's became a cathedral in 1981 when Bendigo was declared a separate diocese. The church, designed by Robert A Love, was dedicated in 1868, with the bells being added in 1873 and the organ in 1883. The Abbotsford convent housed large numbers of Good Shepherd nuns, as well as a number of unmarried mothers and their children. The mothers worked in a large commercial laundry facility. The large chimney in this photo is most probably associated with the laundry. In 1960 the Crowes railway station and yards had been closed for six years, since December 1954. This section was left to the elements, the line being rapidly covered with vegetation. From 1923 until 2008, Warley Bush Nursing Hospital served the Island. In 1923 benefactors, Mr and Mrs W E Thompson, purchased the home of the late Robert Walpol, and presented it to the people of the island for use as a hospital. This school text book has been used at the Wangoom State School in the late 19th century by Henrietta Giles. The Wangoom school was established in 1865 as the Wangoom Common School No. 645 and later became the Wangoom State School. It is now closed. Henrietta Giles was a member of the Giles family that lived on the Allansford Road.This book is of interest as an example of the school texts used by children in Victoria late in the 19th century. It contains the history of Britain in Tudor and Stewart times and has no Australian content. The book is also of interest as it was used by Henrietta Giles, a member of the family that settled early in the Warrnambool district. This is a hard cover book of 331 pages plus some supplementary material at the end. The cover (once blue?) is much stained and torn and the embossed black lettering and British Coat of Arms on the front cover and the spine are now almost indecipherable. Part of the back cover and the bottom edges of some pages have been eaten away. The inscription is handwritten in red ink. The text contains many illustrations, some of which have been hand-coloured. The first Presbyterian gathering was held in Wycheproof in 1876, this led to the organization of a congregation and the building of a church. The first church was in Charles Street on the north side of the Mount. It served the congregation for twenty years. A ticket voucher book used on the railway line between Bairnsdale and Orbost which closed in 1987. Escept for special events, passenger trains ceased in 1937 and after that time, passengers wishing to travel by train had to take the good trains and be issued with this ticket. This is a special edition of The Gap to celebrate 150 years of Victorian settlement. The first edition of this magazine was produced by associated elementary schools in the Omeo Shire. The magazine was published from 1920 to 1927 and 1963 to 1969. This is a special issue in 1985. Frederick George Hurst (1841-1927) and Catherine Heffernan were married in Victoria in 1872. Frederick came to Australia in 1854, aged 12 years. They lived at Allwood, Hurstbridge and had three daughters. Initially the site on Jackson Hill also known as She0ak Hill opened as an Industrial School for orphaned or neglected children and in 1879 it became an asylum where it continued to function as an asylum until the Victorian Government closed it on 20th November 1992.The Sunbury Asylum played an important part in Sunbury and wider community's development over 150 years. throughout its existence there was much interaction between the residents, staff and local community, many of whom were employed at 'The Hill' as it was known locally. In 1872 the Derby Silver Company began production in Derby, Connecticut U.S.A. The company made bathroom-related items, clocks, tableware, flatware, candlesticks and more objects made of silver, silver plate and more. In 1898 the company became a division of the International Silver Company with headquarters in Meriden.CT.
