Schuss was advertised as Victoria’s Official Ski Journal It was issued monthly from 1935 to 1961 except during the war when summer issues covered two months. This continued after the war, but it averaged 10 issues annually over its 25 year life. Schuss was published by the Ski Club of Victoria which had a membership of 38 Ski Clubs and demanded to be recognised as the prime authority on skiing in the state. The other 30 ski clubs with 85% of the members disagreed and the politics of skiing became heated. These clubs formed the Federation of Victorian Ski Clubs with their own journal, Ski Horizon. With the establishment of the Victorian Ski Association, Ski-Horizon published its last issue in Nov - Dec. 1955 and the role of the official journal was fully taken over by “Schuss”. This item is significant because it contains stories, images and information documenting the development of the ski facilities at Falls Creek.The journal includes stories and events chronicling developments in Victoria and internationally. The cover features a photo of a female skier passing beneath trees, which was provided by the Herald newspaper. Pages 323 - 329 included an extensive report of the Australian National Ski Championships held at Falls Creek In August 1960, written by R. J. Zatorski. Results were included with this report. Fred Griffith contributed a report and results of the N.E.D.S.A. Junior Championships on pages 334 - 338. A selection of photos from both Championship events was included. Finally Falls Creek was able to boast of the existence of three electricity- powered street lights in the Village. French Louis Merci is shown as J.L. Merci on the settlement map, having selected Lot 26 in the Village Settlement in 1901.It was a 5 acre Lot bordering Barbers Road and the Dray Track (now Link Road). Louis shared his hut for some time with Peter the Swede. The Town Hall Cafe was opened by A.J. Lucas in 1894 in Swanston Street on the Capitol Theatre site. Lucas later opened the exclusive Paris Cafe on Collins Street (1904) and the famous Cafe Australia (1916) which was designed by Walter Burleigh Griffin. He became a highly successful businessman and was the founding president of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society. A.J. Lucas who was born in the village of Exoghi migrated to Australia from Ithaca in 1886.In 1920 Lucas formed a joint venture to redevelop the site of the Town Hall Cafe into Capitol House and Capitol Theatre. Lucas once again commissioned Walter Burley Griffin and wife Marion Mahony Griffin as architects for the project. The Chicago-Gothic-style theatre is considered their greatest interior design work. The Capitol was the first extravagant ‘picture palace’ to be built in Victoria. It originally seated over 2137 people. A geographical dictionary or gazetteer of the Australian colonies : their physical and political geography : together with a brief notice of all the capitals, principal towns, and villages. William Wells travelled to Australia as a sponsored immigrant in 1838. Her became a freelance surveyor with an office in Bligh Street, Sydney. He wrote this book in order to better inform the British public on the colonies of Australia. Private Harry Nutman Derrick, a native of Tallangatta Valley in NE Victoria served with the 37th Australian Infantry Battalion 10th Brigade, 3rd Division AIF. He was wounded on three occasions. On the third occasion he was captured near the village of Clery on 30 August 1918. He died in a German military hospital on 12 November 1918 the day following the Armistice. A transcribed copy of the diary is held in the Local History Section of the Albury LibraryMuseum.This diary documents the day-to-day activities of a private soldier of the AIF during almost two years at war including two occasions on which he was wounded and evacuated to England. Photographed is Stathi (Efstathios) Vlassopoulos (Vlass) (Kopela) arrived in Melbourne in 1932 and headed to Mildura where his father Dimitrios Vlassopoulos, was established. From there he moved to Hopetoun and operated his own cafe business. He later returned to Melbourne where operated the Metro Cafe in Swanston Street, Melbourne. He sent the photograph to his Aunt Anastasia (Tasia Raftopoulos-Florence) who was living in the village of Platrithia on the island of Ithaca in Greece.Stathi Vlass was very active in Greek community affairs and was secretary of Melbourne's Greek Community and president of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society from 1957 to 1959, during which time he lead the building of Ithaca House in Elizabeth Street. He also published the first daily Greek newspaper 'Ta Nea' in Melbourne. This plan records the Brighton Estate, also known as Dendy's Special Survey. In 1840 Henry Dendy, a farmer in Surrey, England acquired a "Special Survey" from the Commissioners for Land and Emigration which gave him the right to choose land in Port Phillip for the low price of £1 per acre for 5120 acres. Dendy appointed Jonathan Binns Were, as his agent, who later became a partner. Together, Dendy and Were decided on an area 5 miles south from Melbourne, bounded by North Road, East Boundary Road, South Road and to the west by Port Phillip Bay. Their Brighton Estate was first surveyed by T. S. Townsend in May 1841 and was re-surveyed by Robert Hoddle. Dendy and Were were making plans to sell the land and advertised a 30-guinea prize for the best subdivision which was to be divided into a village, marine residences, suburban and cultivation allotments, with the remainder being divided into country sections. The competition was won by H.B. Club Hotel, East Ringwood in November 1969Written on backing sheet, "Club 1969. Site originally marked out as local cemetery 1871. Hotel built as single storey 1877" The hotel has a long association with the Reddish family, thus given the name of "Daisy's Hotel". Ryman Healthcare bought the site in 2019, including the garden supply business next door, making up a 2.2ha area. The proposal was for a $220 million retirement village to be built. The location is next to Ringwood Lake with the old hotel being knocked down in the early 2020s. Was H17 in previous numbering system.

Advertisement insert in The Age newspaper around the opening of the 1956 Olympic Games promoting Briar Hill Timber's association with the Olympic Village Project being suppliers of all building materials including Flush Panel Doors, Mouldings and Joinery. Briar Hill Timber owned by F. Squire and the Squire family owned a lot of land around Briar Hill and land for forest at Flowerdale. A related souvenir from the Second Word War is the colourful 'Souvenir of Palestine'. Like the First World War Egyptian embroideries, they used cotton sateen in a range of bright colours (although sometimes velveteen was used instead) and bear the words 'Souvenir of Palestine', a year date, and sometimes a personal message, as well as images of specific mosques or landmarks, camels, goats and date palms. The Palestinian souvenirs were often seen displayed for sale outside houses in country villages These types of souvenirs were very popular with Australian troops; they were easy to send home and were colourful. The vendors would have a number of designs for sale already machine embroidered, from which the soldier could select and then personalise with a date or message.
