Functional object - Cookware, Revere Ware
Robin Boyd developed a close friendship with the founder of the Bauhaus in Weimar Germany, Walter Gropius, who had moved to the USA in the 1930s. Through this connection, Boyd was invited to be the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Bemis Professor at the School in the North American academic year 1956-7. During this time, the Boyds purchased this set of Revere kitchenware, which carries the prized "Process Patent" maker's mark on the thick copper bases. Mandie Boyd recalls: "I don’t remember a lot of cooking going on in them, if any, as they were a pain to clean but looked fabulous hanging on the wall absolutely gleaming. We would all check our hair and make up in them."A set of Revere Ware Saucepans and Frying Pans. Functional object - Kerosene Lamp Burner, Bradley and Hubbard Manufacturing Company, Late 19th to early 20th century
Bradley and Hubbard established their company in 1852 in Meriden, Connecticut when Nathaniel and William Bradley, Orson and Chitten Hatch, and Walter Hubbard, formed Bradley, Hatch & Company. This incarnation of the company only manufactured clocks. The Hatch brothers sold their interest in the company in 1854 and it was renamed, Bradley & Hubbard. Clocks remained the firm's primary product into the 1860s. In addition to their line of clocks, Bradley & Hubbard also produced a wide range of household items including match safes, call bells, andirons, urns, bookends, frames, desk accessories and vases. Technological advances in drilling and refining crude oil in the late 1850s and early 1860s paved the way for the demise of whale oil as lamp fuel. Soon after Colonel Edwin Drake struck oil in Titusville, Pennsylvania on August 27, 1859, Nathaniel Bradley saw an opportunity to capitalize on the future of this new fuel. Nathaniel decided to produce an extensive line of kerosene burning lamps this proved to be a wise business decision. Kerosene was soon to become a widely used, safe and relatively inexpensive lamp fuel. Between April 7, 1868, and December 23, 1913, the company was listed as the assignee for at least 89 lighting patents. Many of these patents were for lamp and chandelier designs and various improvements in lamp burners. In 1875 the company reorganized to form the Bradley and Hubbard Manufacturing Company. Walter Hubbard served as President and Nathaniel Bradley as Treasurer. The firm enjoyed rapid growth throughout the 1880s. By 1888, the company employed over one thousand workers and had showrooms in major cities including New York, Philadelphia, Boston and Chicago. One of the most prolific of the B&H products was the Rayo lamp it produced under contract for Standard Oil. In keeping with the changing times, Bradley & Hubbard produced a variety of electric lamps as well. Walter Hubbard passed away in 1911 and Nathaniel Bradley in 1915. The company continued through the 1930s and was purchased by the Charles Parker Company, also of Meriden, Connecticut, in 1940. The Parker Company was quite diversified in its product line, also producing an extensive line of lamps and high-end chandeliers. Parker operated its acquisition as the "Bradley & Hubbard Division." Parker ceased production of the Rayo lamp in the early 1950s. In 1973, the Bradley and Hubbard buildings were demolished, effectively ending that chapter in American lighting manufacture.Early innovation in kerosene lamp burner design by Bradley and Hubbard lamp manufacturers who at the turn of the 20th century were the biggest lamp producers in the world. The item is significant due to its historic connection with a major innovator of lamp design.Lamp Burner, metal container with turning screw for wick and mesh walls. Is made in 2 parts. Book, McKenzie Day Book, Early 1900s
This is a 1918 Day Book listing some employees/contractors and the day-to-day tasks undertaken by them. There is a separate page for each employee. The book lists such tasks as ‘carting from the Quarry’, ‘tarring Raglan Parade’, ‘tarring at the Gardens’, ‘screening Liebig Street’, ‘working at the Ladies’ Baths’ and ‘general patching’. The names of the employees/contractors include Niven, Thompson, Jewell, Walters, Mooney, Rodgers, Williams, Dunne and Gee. The name ‘McKenzie’ on the first page is the only clue to the identity of the employer/overseer and so far his identity has not been established. The jobs listed suggest that he was either an employee of the Warrnambool Council in the Public Works area or a contractor hired to do the same sort of work. This note book is of great interest as it lists workers and the jobs covered by them in 1918 in Warrnambool and it will be of greater significance when the identity of McKenzie is established. This is a note book with ruled blue and red lines. The cover is black and is a little torn and scuffed. There are some loose pages. The entries in the book are handwritten, mostly in black ink. ‘McKenzie Day Book November 4th 1918’history of warrnambool, mckenzie contractor, mckenzie warrnambool -

Book, A school Treasury of English literature, 1912
This a school text book edited by Walter Logie Forbes Murdoch (1874-1970). He had a distinguished academic career and is regarded as one of Australia’s best essayists. He was a household name to two generations of Australians through his radio broadcasts and syndicated literary columns in several Australian newspapers. He was in Warrnambool early in the 20th century as the proprietor of a private school. In 1904 he left Warrnambool to take up a lecturing position at Melbourne University. He went on to become the foundation Professor of English at the University of Western Australia and later its Chancellor. Murdoch University in Western Australia is named after him. He was knighted in 1964. He published over 40 books. This book is of interest because it was edited by Walter Murdoch, an important figure in Australian literature and a man who played a part in Warrnambool’s history. In 1901 Murdoch came to Warrnambool, going into partnership with James Scott, the proprietor of Warrnambool College. They bought out Stanley’s Warrnambool Grammar School. When Scott retired Murdoch became the sole proprietor of the school. While in Warrnambool Murdoch wrote a school history textbook, ‘The Struggle for Freedom’. He left Warrnambool in 1904This is a hard cover book of 448 pages. It has a dark red cover with gold printed letters on the spine and the printing on the front cover is etched into the cover. It has a Prefatory Note, a Contents page, Sections Three and Four containing extracts from English Literature (the book is the Part Two volume) and advertisements at the back for other books published by Thomas Lothian. Hans Walter von Gruenewaldt was a German POW who used his artistic ability to paint several large mural caricatures whilst he was held at Camp 13 at Murchison. The technique he used was colourful house paint, painted directly onto the walls of the German mess hut, reading room and recreation hall. After the war, the recreation hall paintings and all, was moved from the camp to the nearly town of Murchison and used as the RSL local dance hall for 50 years. When the hall was demolished the paintings were restored and framed by citizens of Murchison. The von Gruenewaldt murals presently hang in the David Jones Nursing home and other public buildings in Murchison.Photograph of caricature painted on mess hut wall. Manufactured Glass, bottle 'Crystalline Penicillin', December 1955
Penicillin is a group of antibiotics derived from Penicillium fungi, including penicillin G, procaine penicillin, benzathine penicillin, and penicillin V. Penicillin antibiotics are historically significant because they are the first drugs that were effective against many previously serious diseases, such as syphilis, and infections caused by staphylococci and streptococci. Penicillins are still widely used today, though many types of bacteria have now become resistant. All penicillins are β-lactam antibiotics and are used in the treatment of bacterial infections caused by susceptible, usually Gram-positive, organisms. The development of penicillin for use as a medicine is attributed to the Australian Nobel laureate Howard Walter Florey, together with the German Nobel laureate Ernst Chain and the English biochemist Norman Heatley A clear glass bottle with a metal fixed top in which the central rubber disc has been pierced by a needle .Front: CRYSTALLINE PENICILLIN / ( SODIUM SALT) G / GLAXO / FOR INJECTION / Use only under medical supervision / 1000000 / UNITS PER VIAL. Sending postcards to family and friends including short messages was a common form of communication in the early 20th century from 1905 to the 1940s. Many were collected and kept in albums. This scene is viewed looking north along Main Road from near Bridge Street. The old Baker’s shop (Burgoyne’s store) on the corner of York is on the right. Also visible is the footpath dug by hand c.1906 between Yoirk Street and Bridge Street. On the left is ‘Derril’ or more commonly known as the Gahan House after it was purchased by Walter Ernest and Alice Miriam Gahan in 1924, on the western side of Main Road near the present-day site of Shillinglaw Cottage where they remained till about 1960 when Walter died. The house was demolished in 1968 during the widening of Main Road. In the distance on the bend is the Shillinglaw cottage with the Shillinglaw trees out front of the cottage. On the eastern side at the top of the hill (visible immediately to the left of the bakery) is the new St Mary’s Catholic Church on Henry Street near Main Road. The church site was relocated c.1912 from further south along Main Road (near Wingrove Cottage) in order to be more central to the congregation following the shifting of the township away from Little Eltham and closer to the railway station. It was subsequently destroyed by fire in 1961. On the back of the postcard is written: Printed Post Empire Care - correspondence - Address only - stamp Written in ink: 15 ? 1920 Many happy of the day I hope you and ? will have a very pleasant trip ? a great time when you reach England. ? & best wishes from your sincere friend E Harper? This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as the 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' It is significant in being the first community sourced collection representing the places and people of the Shire's first one hundred years.Digital image 4 x 5 inch B&W Neg Sepia Postcard 9 x 14 cm 35mm positive transparencyshire of eltham pioneers photograph collection, eltham, main road, gahan house, bakery, footpath, postcard, shillinglaw cottage, shillinglaw trees, st marys catholic church, york street, michael aitken collection -
