These badges were produced in World War One in Australia to raise funds for the war effort. ANZAC Day is an important national holiday in Australia commemorating the landing of Australian and New Zealand troops on Gallipoli on 25th April 1915. The national day was instituted on 25th April 1916 and badges such as these would have been sold on the anniversary of the landing day. Badges were sold on trams, buses, at railway stations, other public buildings and at rallies held on or about ANZAC Day. A feature of Agricultural Shows was military sports. Following World War One, the 8th (Indi) Light Horse was raised in the Citizen Military Forces, superseding 16th (Indi) Light Horse. It had its headquarters at Benalla with sub-units throughout the Upper Murray and Northeast Victoria. In December 1941, the regiment converted from horse to mechanised, initially as 8th Reconnaissance Battalion then in July 1942 it became 8th Cavalry Regiment and served in Northern Territory. A Vale notice that was published in the Bulletin in 1975 on the death of Legatee Oswald Gawler. He joined Legacy in Adelaide in 1929 and was president of Melbourne Legacy in 1943. He served on the Co-ordinating Council for many years. In World War One he had served on Gallipoli and in France and Belgium. In 1917 he was severely gassed which impacted his health and eyesight in later years His professional career was as an actuary and his forecasts helped make many policy decisions in Legacy. This leaflet published by The Great Ocean Road Trust in 1918 gives information about the proposed building of the Great Ocean Road from Barwon Heads to Warrnambool as a memorial to Victorian soldiers in World War One. The President of the Trust, which was a private company seeking donations from the public, was Howard Hitchcock, the Mayor of Geelong. The Memorial Great Ocean Road commenced in 1919 with 3000 ex-servicemen employed to build the road. In 1932 the road was completed to Apollo Bay and in 1936 the road was officially handed into the care of the State Government. This leaflet is of some significance as it shows the initial efforts by Howard Hitchcock of Geelong and a private trust to build the Great Ocean Road in Victoria. This is an empty box but the cover tells us that it was a box used for dentist materials from William Davidson, the Warrnambool dentist. Davidson (1870-1945) came to Warrnambool in 1892 and set up his dental business in the Tozer Buildings in Kepler Street. By 1915 Davidson had one of the most extensive dental practices in the Western District. He served in World War One and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order and was mentioned in despatches. In Warrnambool Davidson was a keen sportsman, being active in the cricket and bowls clubs. He retired in the early 1940s. This box is of some significance as it came from the dental practice of William Davidson, a prominent dentist in Warrnambool for nearly 50 years. This field First Aid kit is a mixture of items, some prepared for use in wartime, including World War One and some for use in peace time emergencies. The calico bag, produced by the Red Cross in Kalgoorlie, W.A., has been used by the State Emergency Service and at a later date by a scout group. The name, ‘S. Dempster’ is on the striped calico bag. Samuel Dempster was born in Ireland and was living at Panmure when he enlisted. He was attached to the 6 Ambulance training. He served from 1942-46 This is a calico shoulder bag with the shoulder strap adjustable with the use of metal clips. This badge appears to have been produced late in 1918 when the Liberty League in Victoria was most active. Full details on the Liberty League have not been found but it seems the league was founded in response to the perceived restrictions on personal liberty and rights imposed in Australia as a result of Government policies and laws during World War One. By November 1918 the Liberty League had 80,000 members and there were many campaigners touring Victoria to recruit more members. It is not known how long the Liberty League existed in Australia. This badge was issued in 1920 to commemorate the visit to Australia of Edward, Prince of Wales. It was issued to school children. The visit of the Prince of Wales was a gesture by the British Crown to recognize the sacrifices and efforts of the Australian people and defence forces during World War One. Edward, Prince of Wales, later became King of England in 1936 and abdicated that same year. This bust was commissioned and made in the years before Holroyd's retirement from the bench. It is not known precisely when the bust entered the Library collection or the circumstances of its execution and commission. Justice Holroyd (1828-1916) was a judge of the Supreme Court for 25 years, after a successful career at the bar. Charles Web Gilbert (1867-1925) was a largely self taught sculptor, only tackling the medium of marble in the years before World War One. After the war he made a number of War Memorials, but his best known work is his statue of Matthew Flinders, the explorer, in Swanston Street.The portrait of Justice Holroyd is of interest as an unusual depiction and commemoration of a Judge. This badge comes from the Warrnambool and District Pipes and Drums and is presumably attached to an item of clothing. The Warrnambool Pipe Band was formed in 1906, originally to popularise Scottish music and later to foster a taste for bagpipe music. Simon Fraser, the first Pipe Major, held the position from 1906 to 1910. The band appears to have gone into recess during the latter years of World War One and was apparently re-formed in 1935. Again in World War Two the band was in recess The band has had several changes of title but is today known as the Warrnambool and District Pipes and Drums. The badge is of interest as an example of one of the badges belonging to Warrnambool & District Pipes and Drums, an important and long-serving band in Warrnambool. This book gives information on 1,100 War Memorials in Victoria. It was compiled by Bradley, Christey et al and produced for the Returned and Services League of Victoria. War Memorials were established in most settlements in Australia after World War One and added to after World War Two and succeeding conflicts. The number of War Memorials reflect the historical importance of Australia’s involvement in world wars and because of our distance from the battlefields they have become sacred places in Australia – de facto war cemeteries. The book includes information on the Warrnambool War Memorial and those in our area. This book is of interest as it gives details on War Memorials and includes all those in the Western District of Victoria. It will be useful to researchers of social and military history. During the desert campaign in World War One (1914-1918) when grazing was non existent the horses began eating their neck ropes as a substitute. As a result the ropes were replaced with the British cavalry neck chain. The links are for securing the toggle piece when it was around the horses neck whilst being ridden. When the rider dismounted he would unlink the chain and use it as the horses lead chain. It was also used to tether the horse. These are programs for the commemoration ceremonies held in Warrnambool in recent years. Anzac Day, 25th April, has been a public holiday in Australia since 1927 and at first commemorated the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps troops who landed on the Gallipoli peninsula, in Turkish Thrace, the European section of Turkey, on 25th April 1915 and engaged in battle with the troops from the Ottoman Empire in World War One. Today Anzac Day commemorates all Australian and allied troops who fought for their country in world conflicts. The programs reflect the deep reverence Australians have for both Anzac Day and those who fought for us. These programs are of some interest as they represent the type of commemoration that takes place in Warrnambool each year on Anzac Day. The local people, like most others in Australia, hold Anzac Day as an important, if not the most important, national day. These three programs are for commemoration ceremonies in Warrnambool for Anzac Day, 2009, 2012 and 2013. Two of them are two A4 white sheets of paper folded in two to make 4 pages printed back to back and the other is a larger folded cream-coloured sheet containing four printed pages. This album contains photographs of a family, (the Horns of ‘Wildwood’, Warrnambool) and other photographs of Warrnambool – the foreshore, the Soldiers’ Memorial, the Breakwater, the Hopkins River, Liebig and Timor Streets etc. It has been made by a member of the Horn family and given as a Christmas present to other members of the family. Charles James Horn came to Australia in 1881and was a tutor to the Barber family of ‘Staywood Park’, Wangoom. He and his wife Emma then worked a property at Cudgee before settling in Warrnambool at ‘Wildwood’ in North Warrnambool. One of their sons, Charles Bernard Horn married Margaret Cairns in 1916 but died in 1927. Another son, Leslie, was killed in World War One. This little album is of great interest because it contains photographs of the Horn family and other photographs of views in Warrnambool. It is therefore of considerable historical interest and will be very useful to researchers. As it is a handmade item it is also of interest because it is an example of the sort of homemade items made as presents at a time (the late 1920s) when finances for something more expensive may not have been available. These are two items which are believed to be linked. One is an envelope marked ‘C.J. Horn, Wildwood, Warrnambool’ and the other is a blue-covered homemade album of photographs bound with red wool. The front cover has ‘Warrnambool’ written in red ink and the back of the front cover is stamped ‘Ralph Barnes, Chemist, Warrnambool’. There are 22 sepia-coloured photographs of a family (the Horns) and other views of Warrnambool. All have a label on the back. This cookbook was produced by the Warrnambool and District Pipes and Drums, partly as a fund-raiser and partly as a promotional exercise. A Pipe Band was formed in Warrnambool in 1906 with twelve foundation members. Simon Fraser was the original Pipe Major and the band has had some changes of name since its foundation. The band was not operating for some time during the years of World War One and again during World War Two but today under the name of Warrnambool and District Pipes and Drums it performs at concerts, dinners, band competitions, official functions, street parades etc and has won both Victorian and interstate Championship titles. This book is of interest as an example of a fund-raising exercise by a local organization early in the 21st century. This is a soft-cover book of 94 pages. This cup was awarded at a sports day held in 1937 by the Second Cavalry Division of the Victorian Light Horse regiments (The 4th/19th Light Horse Regiment was active in the Warrnambool region at that time). The Victorian Light Horse had both mounted infantry and cavalry units and was the successor in the early 1900s to the Victorian Mounted Rifles founded by Colonel Tom Price in 1886. Eight mounted contingents from Australia served in the Boer War and the Australian Light Horse served with distinction in World War One. The Australian Light Horse, as official military units, ceased to exist in the 1940s. It is not known to whom this cup was awarded in 1937. This cup is of considerable interest as a memento of the activities of the Victorian Light Horse regiments in the 1930s, possibly in the Warrnambool district.This is a silver-plated cup on a circular Bakelite stand. This demijohn came from the produce store of T. Redford and Co. Thomas Redford came to Warrnambool in 1864 and worked in the produce store at the corner of Fairy and Timor Streets. This had been established by Redford’s uncle, Frederick Stevens in 1857. Thomas Redford became the proprietor of this produce store in 1879 with the trading name of T. Redford & Co. Thomas Redford was a noted sportsman in Warrnambool (cricket and football) and was a Town Councillor from 1884 to 1890. His son, a Major in World War One, was killed at the battle of the Nek in 1915. Thomas Redford senior died in 1907 but the firm of T. Redford & Co continued on until the early 1920s. This demijohn is of significance as a memento of an important produce business in Warrnambool – the firm of T. Redford & Co was in existence for over 40 years. This is a stone demijohn with a cream-coloured base and body and a brown top and brown handle. The circular opening has a metal top. The maker’s name is etched into the top section. ‘T. Williamstown was first incorporated as a borough on 14 March 1856. It became a town on 2 April 1886, subdivided into four wards in 28 October 1887 and was proclaimed a city on 17 May 1919. The city was proclaimed by His Excellency the State Governor, the Hon. Sir Arthur Stanley on 17 May 1919. At the same time he unveiled a photographic honour board in memory of local soldiers killed during World War One and officially opened the Town Hall/Council Chambers building at 104 Ferguson Street. The Governor was presented with this proclamation and asked to sign the parchment. The official birth of the city was celebrated by 2000 residents. This book is a novel by John Whitson published in 1907 and it could have belonged to either Thomas Redford Senior or his son. Thomas Redford Senior (d. 1909) was in the produce business with Frederick Stevens in Warrnambool in the 1860s and in 1879 he took over the business under the name of T.Redford and Co. This business operated at the corner of Fairy and Timor Streets. Thomas Redford Junior was a Major in World War One. He was killed at Gallipoli and his body was recovered from the site of his death by members of his company who were also from Warrnambool. Notable among these men was Paul McGinness, a war hero who was later to found the airline Qantas. This book is of interest as it belonged to a member of the Redford family, prominent in business in Warrnambool and in military exploits in World War One. The book gives us a idea of which novelists were popular reading in the early years of the 20th century. This is a hard cover book of 283 pages. It has a light brown cover with lettering in black, gold and brown, a colour image of a rose on the spine and a colour image of a house and a car on the front cover. There is a full page colour plate at the beginning of the text pages and this is covered with protective tissue. The inscriptions are handwritten and printed in black ink. At the back of the book there are advertisements for other books published by Little, Brown and Company. The binding is coming loose at the top edge and the cover is very faded and stained. ‘T. A characteristic figurative monument, the memorial comprises a single standing soldier, looking down the main street, a top a polished granite pedestal with honour roll set on a huge rock faced granite block.The memorial is fenced by heavy set square concrete bollards supporting heavy gauge chain between each. tBuilt by J. Wilson & Co. of Bendigo, the Apollo Bay Memorial depicts the lone soldier, a typical symbol of the sentiments of communities who had lost faith in heroism and had learnt to recognise the level of loss caused by war amongst ordinary volunteers.
