Apothecaries weights were historically used by physicians and pharmacists for the assembling of medical recipes (20 grains = 1 scruple; 3 scruples = 1 dram (drachm); 8 drams = 1 troy ounce). The coin weights were used up until about the 1940s. This coin is a stater, a 2 gram coin. The symbol for the dram was the number 3 and the letters ‘ij’ are equivalent to the Roman numerals 11 meaning two. The coin has the date March 16, 1847, the date of the registration of the coin.This coin has no known local provenance but a two-dram coin such as this would have been used by doctors and pharmacists in the Warrnambool district from the 1840s to the 1940s approximately. This is a car picnic set made by the English firm of G. W. Scott and Sons who were producers of wickerwork crafts, basketry and luxury leather goods. The business was founded in 1661 and ceased operations in 1967. This is a rectangular wooden box with a leather covering. It has metal hinges on the corners of the box and two two metal catches on the side with a leather belt and metal buckle on one of these catches with one leather belt missing on the other side. These leather straps were to attach the picnic box to the running board of the car. There are also two metal catches or locks on the front of the box. Inside the box there is a white lining with a plaited wickerwork insert containing spaces for the following: 1. large china container with a silver top 2. smaller metal container with a silver lid 3. small rectangular metal tin with a silver lid. This was the House Cup of a Warrnambool private school, Braemar Grammar. It operated from 1931 to 1950 and was in Manifold Street. The school had an average enrolment of 45 primary school students and closed because of the unavailability of suitable school premises. The donor of the House trophy, Dr Alfred Brauer, was born in South Australia and studied medicine at Melbourne University. He had a practice in Koroit Street Warrnambool for 45 years and had many community interests including horse racing, football, golf, cricket and education. He was associated with Warrnambool High School, Braemar Grammar School and Warrnambool Technical School, donating trophies to all three schools. Today the former Warrnambool Technical School is called Brauer College. These two boards were clipped on to the creased edge of trousers and the item stored in this way. They were used in lieu of irons in the days before electric irons. These items come from the household of the Angus family in Warrnambool. Dr William Roy Angus (1901-1970) studied medicine in Adelaide and Edinburgh. He practised medicine in South Australia and at Nhill before coming to Warrnambool in 1939. In later years he specialized in ophthalmology. The Angus family lived at ‘Birchwood’, a house now demolished. Dr Angus was very civic-minded and was active in a great number of community groups.These items are retained because of their connection to past years and because of their association with the well-known local Warrnambool doctor, Dr Angus. Bugles have been used for hundreds of years for communicating instructions, particularly in battles, and announcements such as calls to assemble and various other routines of the day, particularly for infantry and military units. This pure silver bugle was presented to the Warrnambool Rifle Volunteers by Lady Helpman, on behalf of the Ladies of the District of Warrnambool, on June 18th, 1861. Lady Helpman's husband, Captain Benjamin Franklin Helpman, was Warrnambool Harbour master. The gift of this silver bugle was presented to the commanding officer of the Warrnambool Volunteer Rifle Corps, Captain Bushe, who then passed it on to the Warrnambool Volunteer Band. On 11th August 2016, during a ceremony at Flagstaff Hill, the Australian Army handed over custodianship of two very significant historical items the 1885 W. Clarke Trophy and the 1861 Warrnambool Ladies Silver Bugle to Warrnambool City Council, for display at Flagstaff Hill Maritime museum, both heritage listed items are strongly connected to the city of Warrnambool and form an integral part in the history of the Warrnambool Garrison.The Silver Bugle is locally significant to the community of Warrnambool for its connection to the Warrnambool Volunteer Rifle Corps., which formed part of the original Warrnambool Garrison to protect the Warrnambool Harbour. The site of the 1888 Warrnambool Garrison and Fortifications is Victorian State Heritage-listed is significant for its intact and operational nature and is one of the best-preserved pieces of Victoria's early colonial heritage.
